Total War: Shogun 2 - 20GB
The Witcher - 15GB
Portal 2 - 11GB
The Witcher 2 - 16GB <-- Similar game genre ish
Dragon Age: Origins - 15GB

All without DLC.
Even the system requirements for L4D2 were at least 13GB, and that's from 2009 and not exactly extensive?
Do you know what else was 6GB? Dragon Age 2. Yeah, that game that was supposed to be a DA:O sequel but took about 20 hours for a complete playthrough, where every dungeon was the same and you never left kirkwall. If you stay in one city for a game that short, only to enter the exact same 2-3 dungeons then it's really not going to take up a lot of room so no surprise.
It just strikes me as incredibly small for a new game...

Fallout: New Vegas - 7GB
Oblivion - 5.5GB

What you need to know is that most of those games have HORRIBLE compression. Look at the Force Unleashed. That thing was like, what, 18GB or something? Size of the files is really not a huge indicator of the game's depth and content unless it's like 1GB.

I mean, Mirrors Edge was 7GB if I recall correctly. Are you saying that, based off of file size, F:NV and Mirrors Edge are roughly equal in content? That Portal 2 has more content than Mirrors Edge? Splinter Cell: Conviction was like 7.5 GB. There is no way in hell that it had more content than both New Vegas and Oblivion, and even Fallout 3.

Probably just means that there is less audio, or that it is lower quality. Some of those games did not need to be as "big" as they were in the first place (Witcher 2 for instance, only about 25 hours of gameplay and small environments).

In short, don't judge a game by its size in gigabytes.

I would say optimized code, but from my experience with Oblivion I'd say that's very unlikely lol.
Witcher 2 is a very linear, story driven RPG... so I would guess that would be one reason for it's large size (very scripted).

Audio can't account for that much surely? Admittedly with some games it accounts for 20GB or something like it apparently will with SWTOR, but the entire thing is voice acted, and it's an mmo. I don't know. It just worries me a little. Hopefully I'm way off and my worries are unfounded like you say.

Ok great answer, you have alleviated my fears.

Fallout: New Vegas is the best possible comparison I guess. It was really big, and I absolutely loved the game.

And, it's made by the same studio right? So that would make sense. Same compression methods or whatever.

Honestly guys, I wouldn't concern yourselves over the "omg it's only 6gb!?" worry, there have been a couple of interviews with Todd Howard from Besthesda where he talks about the new compression system that the game uses.

They also mentioned that because of these new techniques, they were able to make the game in 5 different languages which wasn't previously possible.

Audio can take up a shit ton of space, especially uncompressed audio. Which a lot of people, for some reason, do.

Honestly, you all should be glad it doesn't take 25GB of space.

So buy a physical copy like i did i dont rly see the steam problem , or rather why you HAVE to get if off steam for some reason.

furthemore i see the lack of reading previous posts disturbing.

There several resons mention from many why pc version is inferior to concoles yet there the very ame question foalting.

1 - better resolution
2- mods
3- keybinds ( immensely beter gameplay like this , ) tbh for sc2 fans you should have known that playing any game without keybinds is 10fold harder. For starters it wont require the annoying pause to switch wepon , cast spell , pause switch wepon again , that consoles have.
4- Better textures
5 - pc friendly interface
6 - cant beat mouse keyboard for first person rpg gameplay experience

and many more

I can't decide whether or not to buy in the store or just dl on steam and play right away friday... Thank you Paid Holiday Off (Veterans Day in USA). My company will be paying me to play Skyrim allday. ^_^

Anyway, back to my dilemma... ever since I was a kid i loved looking through the game boxes and stuff.. I would miss that but I also want fastest, easiest way to play... grrr.

I can't believe I'm not going to buy this game at release. If I do I won't nearly do as good in school.

It breaks my heart. I know what I'm doing during the xmas break though...

I thought you should know, Fallout New Vegas was made by Obsidian Entertainment, not Bethesda Game Studios, although it was published by Bethesda softworks (and Namco for the international versions). However Bethesda did develop Fallout 3, which according to some users is 8 GB including all the DLCs.

DA:O actually requires 20GB of free space to install the game.
That wasn't any act of God. That was an act of pure human fuckery.

Am I the only one worried with how easy it was to kill the dragon? The fight itself seemed anti-climatic, too. I mean, the dragon did 3 things in a loop, the player mindlessly slashed him whenever he came down (for no reason). Dragon fights seemed way more epic in DA:O, which was a turn-based game at heart.

15.356 GB says steam for me, with no DLC. And as others have said above, requirements said like 20GB, and with DLC someone says 23.7 with DLC. It was a big game, a lot of audio too, lots of environments etc.
