The Unofficial Patches are practically mandatory for anyone playing Skyrim. Be sure to download them; you'll appreciate the bug-free experience, at least compared to vanilla Skyrim.

I think, I'll install the Unofficial Patches, the SkyUI and the Skyrim HD - 2K Textures, so the game looks nicer, the gameplay is better and its not too far from vanilla.

The bloody hell...
I was doing the Dragonborn quests, got to the part to use a Shout at a shrine... but I am 3 souls short to be able to activate the Shout... so I went around dragon hunting.... found a dragon, killed it.... only to find that Miraak guy stealing the soul from me.
What a nicely designed quest.

Huehuehuehue^^
He doesn't steal every soul, I've found. Keep going at it. I had like twenty free souls by the time I did Dragonborn so that wasn't a problem, but I can see how that'd get super annoying. That said, why do you need three souls? You just need the first word for the shrine cleansing quest, no?
...
So I finally got to the point where I'm doing extensive enough modding that installing NMM seemed like an attractive option. So I did. Problem is, even after fixing the permissions error by moving the files outside of Program Files, clicking on the "Download with Manager" button on Nexus does nothing. I can log into Nexus, download manually, and log into NMM though. Some searching suggested that NMM is down for a lot/all people at the moment. Is this correct, or am I experiencing some other issie?
EDIT: I figured it out. They're doing server work and NMM downloading is temporarily impossible.

To activate the shout I need 10 souls. I only got 7.

Hi guys I have a question.
I got Frea as a follower (got too tired of "I am sworn to carry your burdens"), but I am struggling to optimizing her equipment. It seems to me that she simply does not want to use the equipment with the highest attack statistic. In fact, it seems to me that she favours her Stalhrim axe so much that she refuses to use the better axes I gave her (Dwarven and Nord Hero), despite mine having greater attacks. She also seem to favour Nord Hero bow I crafted for her, even though the Nightingale bow has more damage. I am also pretty sure she uses her default Nordic axe offhand (again, even though I have better axes for her in her inventory).
Is this a bug of some sort? Miss "I am sworn to carry your burdens" will always choose the equipment with the strongest attack, how come Frea does not?

If you want to play with followers, it's probably better to get one of the mods that overhaul follower interactions to get them to use what gear you get them.

Is this a bug of some sort? Miss "I am sworn to carry your burdens" will always choose the equipment with the strongest attack, how come Frea does not? It's not a bug, but rather an annoying quirk about how followers prioritize equipment selection. Generally speaking, followers will favor their default weapons and armor over equipment you provide them if the stuff you give them is not as "good" as their default equipment. For instance, if a follower's default weapon is a steel sword, giving them an iron sword to wield will do nothing because the steel sword is a better weapon in terms of stats. Regrettably, this behavior also ignores the bonuses from tempered equipment when factoring item selection; so, even if the iron sword in the previous example has been temped to be more damaging than the steel sword, the steel sword will still be chosen because the process only looks at the base statistics.
The reason Frea is rejecting your axes is because the game sees her Stalhrim axe as superior to either of the ones you have, even though yours might actually be better due to enchantments and tempering. There's little you can do about this problem, unfortunately, short of making a better Stalhrim axe, or a Daedric axe.
Regarding the off-hand Nordic axe, only a few followers in the game can actually dual-wield. In Frea's case, though, her combat AI is probably different from them because of her status as a unique, plot-critical character. Unfortunately, I don't know how to address this problem.

OK well, I also have problems with giving her the Nightingale bow. Surely it has more damage (before enchantment) than her default hunter bow. It also has the same damage as her tempered nord hero bow... but nope, she wants to use the nord hero bow. The Nightingale bow is not tempered.
There is something really funny going on here. I also truly regret not picking up the ebony axes I found previously.. surely she would prefer those over that nordic axe.

Am I the only one who doesn't play with a follower? somehow being isolated feels awesome in Skyrim!

Yeah, the vanilla system is really nonsensical and buggy (not to mention inconsistent). If you really want to be able to change Frea's equipment with impunity, I recommend installing the Extensible Follower Framework mod. It's a lightweight mod that basically allows you to customize your follower limit, their equipment, where they will return to if you dismiss them, etc.
EFF uses a non-dialogue-based menu system that is not all that immersive, though. If you wish to actually converse with Frea and get the same benefits, you can try Ultimate Follower Overhaul instead. I don't really like UFO because it has poor grammar in the menus and adds several superfluous (in my opinion) options, but it's an undeniably popular and endorsed mod, so you may want to try that. On the other hand, it doesn't require SKSE to take advantage of all its features, unlike EFF.
Honestly, the only way to well and truly bypass the issues you're facing is to use a mod. #BlameBethesda

Thank you this is really informative.

I suck at this game and it is too hard without Lydia tanking for me.

Once you realize that you're just hoarding loot and gold and don't have anything to spend it on anyway you stop needing the luggage mule.
Unless of course you want your waifu with you at all times or something.

I agree somewhat, but I really like characters with depth and backstory. It's easy to make a backstory for yourself, since you are the Dragonborn (with everything that implies) and have complete control over your own actions and personality. However, sometimes I want some company, and followers are fun for that. For example, I use four follower mods in particular that all introduce characters with depth; instead of that soulless wench Carry-Your-Burdens or whatever, who is excited about finding caves and little else, I get to choose from an array of characters that have a face as well as a name, if you know what I mean. Characters like:
- Hoth, the grizzled bounty hunter who gives you quests to hunt particular animals... along with other, cleverer prey;
- Atvir Dres, the last prince of Tear who brings back the classic Dunmer attitude of Morrowind;
- Inigo, the Khajiit thief whose ambitions in terms of gold belie his inner agenda;
- Vilja, the distant ancestor of the alchemist from the Oblivion crisis who hails from Solstheim, and can actually make YOU the follower as she journeys across Skyrim.
*All of these followers are mods, of course.
Honestly, I use followers for roleplaying purposes moreso than for their prowess in combat.

Your complaint is valid, but it seems to me that the issue really has to do with housecarls being too strong. A lot of followers have quests associated with them, but they often got lower level caps and really crappy skillset/AI.

Inigo the blue cat is the best follower ever, early 00's rpg quality on his personality, huge props to it's maker.

I'm having Serana as my favourite, hoping to marry her later - please don't spoil me. She's decently strong, and I assume she also have the vampire sneak bonus? However, I discovered the Blackreach yesterday, and she had huge pathing issues in some areas. I'm playing a two-handed juggernaught style so tanking is seldom a problem. Also + SkyRe.
Btw, with SkyRe, aren't your skills supposed to go up to 150? My smithing capped out at 101 I think...

you haven't correctly installed the elys uncapper ini made for skyre then. You can change them manually as well, it's just a text file.
