The design for skyrim should be rather simple though: take the atmosphere, story, weapons, armor, factions, guilds and lore from Morrowind, take as little as possible from Oblivion (which I found terribly disappointing), and go from there.
I also wonder wether they'll design for PC and port to consoles, or the other way around.. If it's the latter, it's gonna be rather disappointing graphically. I'm not impressed by the graphics thus far.
The elderscrolls games have never really been about the story. I think the strong points in the series have been beautiful open worlds that you can explore as you like and a big focus on immersion. I wouldn't really mind if they had no main story arc at all and just focused on making an interesting open world that you could interact with. Maybe that's just me

Tell me you are joking. Aside from oblivion each and every elderscroll game had fantastic story, particularly Morrowind. Hell, story is one of the reasons that Oblivion is getting bashed (and did get bashed in the past), second only to the level-scaling.
Sweet jesus, I got some serious nerd chills when the music started up in that trailer. This game has some incredible potential, man I hope they deliver.
Haven't played a Norse badass since Rune. Should be fun. Although I'm sure it'll be released with very little to actually do beyond the main campaign, and then it'll be defended with "Just wait 8 months for mods to come out".

Not really, there is more focus on the open world than the main storyline. I found the Morrowind main quest quite obnoxious to play through, but I spent hours upon hours exploring the absolutely amazing world, be it for side quests, NPC conversations, dungeon crawling or simply sight seeing new areas.
Not saying the main quest was bad, but saying it was the main focus of the game is silly. Did the same thing in Oblivion where I can agree that the MQ was pretty meh compared to the predecessor. If you're playing TES mainly for the story there are probably better games to satisfy that need.

Skip to 2:45 for a snippet out of the theme. I am sure the game is going to be epic like that!
The bit at 2:45 sounds like the Morrowind theme, just more Skyrimish. :/
Seriously though, that new trailer made me so hyped for this. Neck-fuckin-beard Mode activated. I'm so hard right now I could probably saw through titanium.
That trailer delivered. I don't care if the gameplay sucks, I'll be able to run around for hours upon hours just taking in the beauty of the graphics. Of course, optimally, the gameplay will be awesome as well, and the story and voiceacting tolerable.
My wallet won't like the upgrades my computer will need though.

Outside my door is also a big, beautiful world that I can explore as well. I don't need video games for that.
Morrowind holds a special place in my video games collection. I played it years after release, when many people probably considered the graphics outdated. Still I found myself immersed in a world where everything around me had a history. There was a reason that mountain was there. There was a reason the ruins were there. You can nicely map the evolution of society on the central island of Morrowind, since it's an island rich with history. It's an island populated by a mainly xenophobic population, and you, as the player, are subsequently looked down on most of the time. After a while it becomes obvious why people have become that way. It really puts the empire in a not so favourable spotlight. As a consequence it is perfectly possible to sympathise with what the "bad guy" wants to achieve, and to really be in doubt on whether to trust the good guy or not, since he's not exactly the nicest person around either; trickery and deceit are no strangers to him.
That's only part of the main story. Along the way you'll be introduced to the political mess that are the three main houses of Morrowind, the people that still prefer to live the old way and are shunned because of that, different guilds and their struggles and the empire that struggles to keep control of the island. The story will take you to every corner of the island, and requires you to walk quite a lot. When you have to go somewhere you are given directions. There is no compass. You're basically forced to walk and search a lot. This can be frustrating, but also rewarding if you discover something you did not quite expect. Unlike Oblivion, you're map is completely blank so you don't even know where the town are situated. It's all up to you to discover the world of Morrowind, in all its facets. Believe me, it will take you a more than just a while.
I could write pages about Morrowind, but let me just tell you this: morrowind is the only game that had me playing all day long, until the early hours. If you can get past the outdated graphics, mechanics and the bugs (the game is guaranteed to CTD every two-three hours) you'll discover a gem of a game.
Morrowind is basically like a good book: the beginning can be a struggle to get through but once you get past that you won't stop playing. It also helps that the soundtrack throughout the game is phenomenal and adds to the bleak atmosphere. There is no epic moment in TES 3: Morrowind. It's just you and how you decide to play the game.
The official trailer is out! Crank up your volume and prepare to change your pants: http://www.elderscrolls.com/ Amazing music and amazing scenery. Let's hope gameplay is atleast half as awesome as the theme ^^
Edit: I misread the date on the previous posts and thought last one was 2 days ago so I didn't check if it was posted already.

Can you go around swinging your sword at people's face, casting spells to burn whatever you want? Or explore a deep dark cave sneaking with a bow sniping giant wolfs?
I hope you didn't mean to be rude and misunderstood him.

I get to throw people around the mat five times a week during aikido training, so no lack of feeling badass either, if you know what I mean..

The main story in morrowind was 10x worse than oblivion, and oblivion was terrible.
the lore of morrowind is much better than cyrodiil though.
The disapointing thing about the story in Oblivion was that they had these amazing sidequest with excellent stories in the guilds and this rather mediocre main quest where you never really cared much about what you are doing. You often ran through huge areas without that much surprises and then had a few conversations and the mission was over and you whent back to exploring for a few hours and leveled before taking the next main quest mission. It was ok but a lot of the real fun was in the characterdevelopement (not dramatically speaking, but sneaking and lockpicking and stuff).
I don't know why you guys are jizzing over the theme... I really enjoyed Morrowind's relaxed, melancholy composition. It really matched the sort of desolate and bleak and haunting feel and landscape of the game. I didn't appreciate the direction of Oblivion's soundtrack, but it was at least tolerable. I'm hoping they don't continue in that direction as the theme indicates.
The visuals are absolutely stunning, especially considering those are all apparently from an X360. Imagine how it will look on a cranked up pc with whatever new graphics cards are out in November. I've got high hopes for this game. Even if the gameplay isn't super deep and is a lot of hack and slash, they can still craft a convincing and compelling game world.

Because its a different feel. This is a place where John Q McViking kills dragons for sport and absorbs its power highlander-style. The theme is meant to represent that.
wow guys wow..i just watched the trailer.. i'm gonna try to get my hands on cheap morrowind goty and play it before this comes out. oblivion was one of my favorite games, i see so much potential in skyrim
that part when the mage smacked the ground and blasted all those monsters away was awesome
If you want to save money with these types of games, don't want to pirate, and don't mind the console version, I recommend renting and paying late fees until you've beaten the game. (usually takes me 2 weeks of real life time) That's what I did for Fallout: New Vegas, ended up only paying $20-$25 instead of $60.
