Haha same here. I couldn't really get into Oblivion even though I tried multiple times but I've read/seen so many good things about Skyrim that I'm gonna give it one last shot. Only a few more hours :O.

yeah, bethesda as always spent a lot of money on reviewers. some quite obvious flaws arent even mentioned in most reviews.

proof?

obviously oblivion? it was a buggy piece of level scaled shit with a horribly generic world and bad combat/writing/voice acting (pretty much everything important in an rpg).
it got "perfect game 11/10 game of the year every year" reviews when it came out, then a couple of months later all the reviewers do a retrospective and say yeah you know its not so perfect, actually some of it is quite shitty.

similarly for fallout 3.

i mean their games are so badly compromised in certain aspects (and consistently) and they always get great marks, while the slightest flaw on any other producers RPG (apart from bioware) warrants a 7/10 mark.

Your opinion on ratings != proof.

i thought it was universal opinion that oblivion was a pretty bad rpg, and a passable hiking simulator. i mean you even get references in skyrim previews of how bad oblivion was and how fixed compared to it skyrim is. or are you arguing that bad writing, bad animations, bad voice acting, generic worlds, nonsensical story and level scaling make for a 10/10 rpg?

I thought Oblivion was bad as well but this just looks so much better, Oblivion is probably the main reason why I doubt critics these days.

Buying it tomorrow, I'm slightly afraid that it's going to disappoint me like Oblivion did but hopefully not.

First of all. Oblivion was not a BAD RPG. Was it the best? no, I would put Morrowind and a ton of other RPGs as "better".

We're not arguing over whether or not the game was a 10/10 game. We're arguing over your claim that
bethesda as always spent a lot of money on reviewers
which is bullshit. Don't make stupid points and then argue your way onto a topic that's completely different.

Dude all devs in previews talk about how bad their last game was. It makes the improvments sound so much better and wins over people who didn't like previous installments of their series. Oblivion was great, especially with mods

I had the EXACT same problem as you. I eventually just forced myself (with the help of a friend) to start up the Dark Brotherhood quest chain (this was about 2 days ago) and now I'm actually enjoying Oblivion a pretty good amount. I'm almost disappointed I'm going to stop playing it when Skyrim comes out tonight.

I guess I can go back to it when I get bored of Skyrim... one day.

Install a shitton of mods into Oblivion, it'll be a good "in between" when you get bored of Skyrim 24/7 :D

we obviously have different standards on what constitutes BAD RPGs.
my argument for bethesda and paid reviewers was that their games are full of flaws which never impact the end grade or even get a mention in the reviews. also the fact that most reviews read like they were written by bethesdas pr department.

Yes, and when someone asks for proof, "obviously Oblivion" isn't proof, it's your opinion. Whether or not I think Oblivion is a 1/10 or a 10/10, and same goes for your thoughts of the game, you can't just say that Bethesda pays off critics for good review scores without having hard proof of that.

Just because a reviewer doesn't have a bug that happens in his 15 minute playthrough of the game doesn't mean he was paid off to "miss" it.

TBH I find bugs that reviewers don't find, and I don't find bugs that reviewers find in a LOT of games I play. It's unfair to assume the company bribes for scores, anyways.

same here, looks decent, runs fine on my old rig, but the goddamn menu system is just copied over from consoles (and man is it bad).

on another note, the game alt tabs just fine. loading times are good. dialogue and animations are still goddamn awful.

Has anyone figured out yet how to change the FoV? Seems rather low currently. Game so far rather good, aside in the dungeon I had the feeling my character's movement felt a bit jerky.

For those judging oblivion, I think it was OK for the time. You have to remember that wasn't exactly a fantastic time for RPGs. It wasn't a genre definer, but it wasn't awful either. It was more middle-of-the-road of mainstream RPGs.
