Playing on it compared to other programs is great though, it is much better then MWS for example especially when it comes to drafting. The costs really keep me from playing it though. If you are a MTG junkie it's not really a problem as going infinite in constructed on MTGO is seemingly not as hard (though competition is quite fierce online). Drafting on MTGO is a huge money sink though and especially since MTGO lags behind i just don't use it much. I occasionally draft in real life, play some games on MWS and that's it for me. The game is not interesting enough for me to invest more time and money in it, it is too shallow to play more as besides deck building the game is too simple imo. Real life play and drafting is more fun but I don't do that too much either because I don't like the people playing it too much, i simply prefer to play boardgames with some friends then in stead of MTG with some people i like less. Sc2 is tons cheaper then MTGO and is more challenging. The downside is only that sc2 is timebased and thus harder to play relaxed then MTG.

We've been playing with Cockatrice and it works fine, so I suggest we use that. It's super easy to install for new users too. If you've got some other suggestions about time/whatever let us hear them ![]() EDIT: Actually we have a fair amount of people in there right now, maybe if we can get a couple more we could do a draft like now ![]()

Didn't really have too much interest back then nor chance to draft, but recently I did finally get a taste of it as some local players I know showed some more activity and it was a fun experience. Was pretty straight forward with the latest block though, made GB Infect due it being only solid theme among the drafts, too many spread out picks in other colors and results were mostly 2-0 to my favor, some games ended up suprisingly tough. MTGO seems like good system, but the pretty much same cost as of real cards makes it seem quite expensive, maybe I'll try some of the alternatives if I have the time and focus or pop some casual deck to MTGO and just go around with it.

-Cards are much cheaper -Competition is much better -Wider field of opponents...not just playing against the same 8 guys at FNM -Shuffling is much faster, can play twice the number of games in the same time period -Impossible to make a mistake as to the rules -Can be played at any time, day or night, without having to call a friend

i like playing (and being good at) magic, but for some reason playing online just doesnt cut it for me - i always get the feeling that i could play a better game while sitting at my computer. paper magic adds so much more depth to the hobby for me - trading, friends, traveling... the only purpose i see in mtgo is to "grind" games for practice or the lack of an alternative due to time or location of paper tournaments. just figure out what the fun in magic is for you, then pick the platform you want to play it on. thats not really something someone else can do for you, and the advantages and disadvantages of all options have been discussed plenty.

Or should I spend some money on MTGO? I don't want to buy digital cards. It's a silly idea to me. Is there a way I can get cards for free on there?

You can play the casual rooms and buy lots of casual rares/commons and build decks for really cheap but any kind of money mythic is quite expensive, sometimes even more than real life as far as mythics are concerned, Though rares are usually cheaper. You can probably pick up a deck with no mythics in standard for really cheap most rares are .08 unless they are played often which they might top out at 3.00(Stoneforge Mystic is an exception) If you want to play for free then I suggest MWS or Cockratrice or whatever. I play Magic Online and have no problem "not owning my digital cards" but for some people that is an issue I understand that. I actually have made a ton of profit by sticking to daily events and small premier events and avoiding limited like the plague. If you play often you get to play in the season champs which are really really awesome for those competitive players out there. I skipped the last one cause of 3 am start time, but free intuition and 6 packs just for playing daily events and not showing up to my free tournament is great. And the ones I've played in have been awesome especially since I usually have byes, get to play the best players in the world in these. If your not looking to play in competitive events often, but you want to play with money cards, I highly suggest one of the free alternatives as there is no reason to actually have money invested. There is a multiplayer format(3+ players) available on MTGO which Idk if it's available for the free options so you might want to take that into consideration.

If you're up for the grind of MTGO, then online is best fro you, if you prefer the social aspect of meeting up with friends, then play in person. Bing Luke had some articles about MTGO versus real-life after he went to Worlds based on Online performances.
