Well FNM is a Wizards sanctioned tournament with prizes, so I'd definitely call it competitive.

EDIT: On second thought I guess it depends on where you're playing. In a big store in New York is probably more competitive than in a small town where everyone knows eachother. I'd still follow the rules though, no reason not to.

Regardless of # of people, FNM is pretty much just a fun tournament for people to enjoy themselves, no matter how many people are in the tournament. It's actually not even really allowed to rules lawyer over people according to the rules of the tournament. It's like 8k, it's the lowest sanctioned tournaments that MTG runs. Magic The Gathering doesn't use the "competitive" rules sets until the PTQ level.. thats according to MTG website.

Sure they might learn a new rule, but shoving rules down someones throat is the fast track to making people quit the game. If you let them take it back, and let them be aware of what they did, then they learn, and you don't make someone hate MTG at the tournament level

Also, you can't tell me there haven't been like a major portion of your tournament of casual/semi-casual players with fun decks at your fnms, regardless of size. This is a major difference from the regionals/states/ptq level, and then there is even a bigger gap to the GP level.

I have been in "Super" Fnm a few times, the one they hold at Nationals/PTs with a few hundred people, and everyone just has a good time, even the hard core pros relax when they play in it, but to be fair they usually just are over practicing for Saturday.

I'm really disappointed by SOM. the whole artifact sub theme is not really interesting to me.

SOM is def a very disappointing set for me. the power of its uncommons/commons are really low. hell the power of its rares are really horrendous as well.
i mean sure the limited environment is definitely skill testing, but im not sure its in a fun way, just in a... different way.

then again the last time i was playing really heavily was the original mirrodin set which had REALLY powerful cards all around and generally really interesting interactions albeit overshadowed by the oppression that was affinity.

i just find myself looking at the set to make fun casual decks that arent necessarily competitive and its all really meh... one of the few interesting cards is grand architect.
idk i think they diluted too much of it with infect and metalcraft the latter of which doesnt really seem like a good constructed mechanic unless the rewards are much much higher. but they cant really do that because i think the metalcraft balance in limited is really good.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed with scars. Infect doesn't speak to me in any way and the ridiculous power cards not being there makes the set feel... bland. Metalcraft is ok I guess, but it's also very 'safe'. At least in this set you are never going to open up a metalcraft card and be like "whoah, it does THAT?"

I think if nothing else, there's a sweet extended proliferate deck waiting to be made. But that isn't because of the set, its just a sweet mechanic with sweeter implications elsewhere.

Well anything with counters would work with proliferate so you can go from there.

LOL i fail at this game so much.

drafted venser, precursor golem and mimic vat in a draft today and still went 1-1-1.
i really need to just draft bad card aggressive decks. i win so much more often with those cause you just play dudes and turn them sideways.

to be honest I don't feel like archetypes like control/aggro etc really do well in draft unless you get the dream draft..

I just focus on my curve, you want to have an impact on every turn of the game(I avoid 1 drops unless they are really good).. I am not the most successful drafter though so take my advice with grain of salt .

Of course some cards have great synergy with others, and I'll pick those up, but man.. I don't mind those grizzly bears or hill giants at all :D

And there are also those days where everything goes your way in the draft portion, and then somebody smashes you for absolutely no reason.. ugh

well your rares aren't the only thing that determine your draft success! No need to get bad aggressive cards when you can get good ones, imo.

Well, if you have a good curve you can be aggressive those two go hand in hand.

maybe you just don't have a good idea of what a bad card really is

So, I gather from what I've read here that I would pretty much get destroyed if I got on MTGO and started drafting? Can you do Sealed Deck tourneys? I'm not trying to go infinite or make money, but is it even feasible to try and draft a decent amount and then trade for enough cards to build a halfway decent constructed deck?

I played from 4th through Urza's something, then quit and came back after missing Affinity (FML) for a year or so. Dralnu du Louvre control was so much fun, but then I moved away from the only good store around here (biggest in Chicago, actually); that was right around Future Sight. Anyway, did I miss too much during the process to be competitive in draft again, or is it worth giving it a shot (online only)?

You'll get trashed, but frankly unless you are pretty amazing drafting is going to cost you anyway. Just set a budget for it ahead of time, if you are bad you'll get to play less games per dollar, if you aren't you'll get to play more.

Is it any fun in the current set/bracket? Can you still be halfway competitive with a solid-ish aggro deck with a decent curve and some removal? Or do you need to know all of the bombs and combos?

Well limited in SOM so far is a lot better than Zendikar from what I hear. There aren't any overwhelming combos to fear although there are a few tricks there and here, Liquidmetal Coating for instance.

Aggro I have seen different things so there are a lot of options for those. Before starting again, I last drafted in Odyssey and some in CHK block, I don't feel like there are anything glaringly different about drafting outside a few shifts in priority.

i mean alot of this was partially kidding. i had pretty good other cards. i had 3 myr to ramp into my bombs. tumble magnet, trinket mage+darksteelaxe and 2 origin spellbombs, glimmerpoint stag, neurok replica(to go with mimic vat), come random fliers(including the hippogriff)
the biggest problem with my deck is i didnt get to pickup a chrome steed or rusted relic and i didnt get more removal. for removal i only had bounce, a splashed shatter, the metalcraft tap guy and tumble magnet.
i know what good cards are. its just so much easier to play an aggressive deck because you dont need to have as much removal or bomb cards to do well. and later picks tend to have more value.

I'd highly suggest against playing online. I'd head to a local card shop, you can usually draft every Friday for 12 bucks. It's a lot more fun, a lot more bang for your bucks. A lot of the time you can pick up cards that you can sell to pay for most of your draft as well.

You can go through a ton of money very quickly playing online, and have nothing to show for it.

Can't you sell the cards you get online, or can you only get "tickets" for them?
