I finished Baldur's Gate 2 like three times over. Just got my hands on the original Baldur's Gate and downloaded TuTu.

For some reason, I don't like BG 1 as much lol. Seems slower paced despite more difficult as my characters get one hit KO'ed pretty easily. Maybe it's the lack of Dragons?:p

vyyye i couldnt find a beregost fix. i just found some tips how to avoid it or repair broken saves but nothing that just fixes it.

but got a question again!

how does the multiplayer work? can you only start a playthru together or can you jump in? if yes how does it deal with different progression levels?

got my lil brother hooked (hes 19 now so barely missed the good years of PC gaming ~) and would be fun if we could play together without beeing limited to it.

You are able to control all 6 party member slots and swap in characters at will. Any character you have exported or have a save file for can be imported into a multiplayer game at any point without breaking anything, though there will be differences in levels obviously, which can screw the difficulty. As long as you stay away from importing level 1 characters to fight Irenicus or a level 30+ mage to solo BG1 (though I can see this being fun) you should be alright. You can use the CLUAConsole codes to level up underpowered characters to where they would be if they'd have been with you the whole time if it becomes a problem. I don't have much experience playing a full multiplayer game though, so I don't know what happens if you try and swap out NPC characters for player created characters. It might be possible to lose them forever that way so I'd set aside the first two party slots for player controlled characters and only ever swap characters into those spots.

Multiplayer was usually used for people who wanted full control over their party and didn't mind ignoring NPCs, though in theory it would probably be pretty awesome for actual multiplayer use. Getting a bunch of people to play through an in depth game that is like 200+ hours long is probably the main challenge, especially with the story and role playing choices being such a huge part of the game. I've thought about getting a TL multiplayer game for BG1/2 started but I couldn't really see how it would work. There was a succession game started for Dwarf Fortress awhile back, and when I saw that kind of fizzle due to lack of interest I figured a multiplayer TL BG playthrough would probably suffer similar problems.

That's how I usually played through BG1. Make a full party of 6 personally-built characters, save the game, copy the contents into the Single Player savegame folder, load it through there and boom, a full party of my very own to play with (without having to go through the extra multiplayer menu screens each time). That way, in a single playthrough, I ended up with 6 different protagonists to import into BG2! Of course, you miss out on the companion interactions throughout the game, but there really aren't that many. Most of the companions in BG1 don't really do diddly squat throughout the game and aren't any more interesting than your own personally-built party. Totally different story in BG2, of course. Make a full party in that with the same method and you miss out on a fair amount of content.

TCPI, just enter in the IP address of the computer that is hosting a game, if you're using a router you may have to open some ports and firewalls may interfere.

Get a little nifty app called GameRanger if you want to play Baldur's Gate 2 online - just google for it, it's easy to find and install, and it will save you HEAPS of trouble.

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, two masterpieces of gaming that will never be matched.

Cant imagine what it'd be like for someone used to the games of today having to tackle it though, it was quite complex and unforgiving. The interface and engine may seem like "the good ol' days" to is BG fans but would probably just feel clunky to younger gamers.

Best advice to someone playing it now would be to A) get the good Mods and B) not try too hard figure out everything about the game at the beginning but rather just take it easy, figure it out gradually and be prepared to die about 100 times in the first few tough battles

Man it warms my heart to see this thread again. Such an amazing game, so many great memories. I remember the first time I beat the game on 'Very Hard' with my Fighter/Cleric. Dozens of failed homework assignments and almost 80 hours went into that playthrough. BGII is such a fantastically detailed game. <3

Eh, the fights are a bit of a grind anyway. I at least got very frustrated with having to micro 6 characters and all the buffs and spells, so i used a script. much more comfortable this way.
Aah thats the stuff..

I remember laughing like a maniac once I completed my playthrough with the original Tactics mod installed. I recall thinking "nah, it probably isn't that hard, I'm way too good for this to be a challange" and then watched a fallen deva being summoned in the Irenicus' dungeon. Ah, so fun it was. So - be sure to install *the right mods*.

I'm playing through Bg1+Bg2 and I'm loving it.

The difficulty is kind of weird though. Some battles are soooo difficult - when being bombarded by spells like Dire Charm, am I supposed to have tons of Dispel Magic spells to deal with it? Because I don't have anyone with level3 spells yet!

Battles like the one mentioned above feel impossible on the first try when you simply run into the enemy. At the same time, there are so many ways to abuse the enemy once you know where they are - pull one at a time, rest and amass just the perfect spells, spread your guys perfectly before hand etc.

I guess spells like Detect Alignment and Hide in Shadows/Invisibility are there so that if you play the game as if you only had one life you'd be able to do so - always scouting ahead and playing extremely slowly?

Nah actually it is very easy. BG1 is absolutly dominated by ranged characters, mages are really weak. Just use two or three guys with bows and target the ennemy casters first. They will die real quick.
However mages in BG1 can be an absolute pain if you use the SCS1 mod. They have a nice auto buff script so it means that at level 1 you will meet mages with protection against ranged weapons lol.

Well for the first time it is never easy but if you micro properly it is definitly possible.
Also you are right the IA of vanilla BG1 is really easy to abuse you need some mods to make it harder ( luring won't work anymore, auto script for mages, smarter targeting etc... ).

Detect alignment is absolutly useless. One of the main weakness of BG compared to games like Torment or even Arcanum is that there isn't enough emphasis on the "social" skills. Most of the dialogues are pretty straightforward, alignment and reputation doesn't really matter in most of the quests, don't get too low to avoid bounty hunters and high sale prices and that's it. Charisma is only usefull to get good prices too.

Shadow and invisibility are more useful though. If you don't plan on saving/reloading constantly it is really helpful to scout or escape an area. You can even use it to set up perfectly your team for a fight ( even more important if you are playing with mods ).
Also if you use shadow and backstab your thief will make more damage ( they still suck though )

Hahaha tactics Illych <3

Tried it, that mod is so amazing. Took me hours to beat the first level, Then i went for maevar and only beat him because you can buy a really nice shield early on :p
Then i tried to get celestial fury and had a really hard time ( the fun thing is that you are supposed to meet a really high level guy after that lol )
But eventually i stopped to play. Mod was really laggy on my old comp, lot of bugs too and i was playing with a thief ( LOL ).
I just wish i had tried tactics Bodhi before :/

I think that overall SCS is a much better mod though ( only tried SCS1 but i guess it is the same for SCS2 ), it is more balanced and makes the ennemy smarter and not just broken/imba/OP. This means that you can win most of the fights without using lame tactics.

Swashbucklers are decent (iirc!)?

I agree on the other thieves, but they can be nice to multiclass after certain levels (which is probably a pain in the ass to do with the really hard mods)... It's also not helpfull that you can't multiclass into specific kits (Assassin -> Kensai would get some sweet Backstabs and the Poison is actually really handy against Casters... To bad the Assassin/Thieves in general except the Swashbuckler suck at everything else).

BG2 brings back so many memories. Although most of them are of frustration as i decided to try playing through it with a monk... solo... It was hard, VERY hard, but then i hit lvl 15-16 and suddenly it became a lot easier. Turns out monk are stupidly good as saving throws scale up really fast. Near the end i was pretty much immune to everything.

BG2 is such a great game. Awesome story, interresting characters, challenging gameplay and Tiax !

Shame Icewind Dale turned out to be so boring =/

Alright, I have installed this game and have enough food/water to last me 48 hours. Someone give me pointers. I have never ever seen/played this game before and after reading through ~15 pages it seems pretty awesome and right up my alley.

Hm. I dunno, just enjoy the game. Play with anything you like at the start and immerse yourself in the game. It's amazing how time goes by fast. Solve every quest also. If you're stuck anywhere, just ask and we'll try to help you.

Oh, I forgot. Don't advance the story too fast, You'll know when you see it what I mean, it's just that I advanced pretty fast and was done with the game at ~lvl16, my tank got one shooted in ToB regular fights -.-'

I just started a new game:

SoA only (my Tob CD seems broken -.-) and patched it.
So I modded my BG2 a little (The Darkest Day, Solaufein, some smaller NPC's)... Question:

If I now install ToB over this, will I still be able to play or will if destroy the Mods?

Take a look at some BG2 mods would be my advice. I have literally modded mine so much it is larger then my WoW cataclysm file.
I once breadcrumbed watcher in a game with no watchers in the setup.
