I don't know if there's a better way but what I would do is dual to a thief and save, then open up your save and change your kit to bounty hunter and set your thief level to 0 (but keep your xp the same) so when you load the save again it will force you to level up as a bounty hunter so you won't end up with whatever a thief has at that level.

I don't have BG2 installed but I am pretty sure that was how it's done. If it doesn't work you can just create a level 1 bounty hunter and then manually alter your stats/skills that way so you aren't cheating or missing anything

BG2 is by far my favorite game of all time. I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing when I was a kid. Not a good competetive game because of the pause mechanic, but that's what made it fun.
If all you're offering is Dos Equis, I will stay thirsty thank you very much.

I tried this and it works, but it looks like being even part kensai stops you from equipping any thief armor? How are kensais supposed to survive?

Yeah it's a pain that you can't wear armor even when your kensai class is deactive, but once it's active you get -4 ac if you are above level 8 so it's not so bad.

And once you start getting HLAs on your thief you get Use Any Item which means you can wear any armor you want

Kensai's have a bonus to AC, and your THAC0, HP and attacks per round should be so good that you should make short work of any melee fighter in the game. It's the large groups of lower level but physically strong enemies that will kill you. Just don't fight those head on (unless you're soloing.)

Kensai/Thief is stupidly powerful once you regain your abilities. For proficiencies and dual level there are a few things you want to keep in mind, this analysis is assuming you have the fix installed that restores weapon grand mastery to its true level. You will definitely be dual wielding, so your goal will be 5 attacks per round.

At level 9 a kensai has 3 uses of kai and 1.5 base attacks per round. Dual wielding he will have 2.5 attacks per round. If he is a grand master in his main hand weapon this becomes 4 attacks per round (+3/2). This forces you to use the scarlett ninja-to (with use any item), belm, or kundane in the off-hand to achieve 5 attacks per round. Scarlett ninja-to and belm use scimitar proficiency, and combined with usuno's blade, (a good +4 scimitar on the top level of watcher's keep) can make a very powerful weapon set until you get spectral brand in throne of bhaal. Not a bad idea to max out scimitar proficiency if you are going this route.

At level 13 a kensai has 8 proficiency points, 4 uses of kai, and 2 base attacks per round. This gives him 4.5 attacks per round dual wielding with a main hand weapon he is a grand master with. At this point one of the +1 attacks weapons in the off hand would give him 5.5 attacks per round, which is a waste because 5 is the maximum. You can achieve the extra .5 attacks needed to reach 5 APR by equipping the gauntlets of weapon mastery obtained from the ytossi at the bottom of watchers keep. These give +.5 APR +1 THAC0 and +2 to base damage, which will get multiplied by your backstab modifier. This way you can dual wield some ridiculously overpowered weapon combo like Angurvadal/Answerer, or the Axe of the Unyielding for regeneration, or Crom Faeyer etc without worrying about needing that +1 bonus from the offhand weapon. You also get an additional use of Kai and lower THAC0. Both good things as a Kai backstab is an instant 100+ damage to anything in the game. Once you get HLAs you'll be using improved haste, Kai, Time traps, and Assassination to deal out a good 600 damage to everything within reach. I prefer level 13 for these reasons. The downside is that you will get your thief abilities back a lot later, but this is fine in a party, and pretty manageable while soloing too. Kensai/Thief with use any item is a stronger solo character than Kensai/Mage.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to go with a Bounty Hunter and use shadowkeeper to edit in some fighter class bonuses so I can be a good backstabber while having super traps.

Anybody else here has problems with BG2? I loved BG1, but I really dislike BG2 because you start with a high level. I loved the first chapters of BG1 the most, where you were exploring and starting the story slowly. For me this feeling is missing in BG2, you are directly in a huge city with way too many NPCs/too many options. I never got really into BG2 for that reason..
Anybody know RPGs that have this slow and free start of BG1? New or old, I don't really care..

Funny, because I felt the exact opposite. Loved BG2, couldn't get into BG1.

Sure, BG1 gave you more "freedom" in the sense that there were more areas to explore, but most of them were pointless filler wilderness areas that had maybe 2-3 scripted events that were completely uninteresting. I didn't really feel the incentive to explore every nook and cranny of the map like I did in BG2 because the payoff just wasn't worth it. For me, BG1 was a huge drag before you actually got into the titular city of Baldur's Gate.

In BG2, they did away with all the meaningless filler and cut straight to the chase. Almost every area in the game has at least one major quest attached to it, and although the diversity in locale aren't as varied as in BG1, the quest and story design are done a lot better IMO. Less fetch quests, less time spent walking aimlessly around the wilderness, more time getting involved in the story.

BGII is better overall but I still recommend starting with BGI... as you said, the first is less overwhelming to the millenium generation of gamers, and I'm pretty sure that BGII was considered to be a rather deep game for it's time too.

Just a quick note: BG1 had almost no fetch quests, I am pretty certain BG2 had more of those (which is only logical because free quests don't work well in linear worlds (too much can be broken by the player), while fetch quests always work, no matter how the world is made).

I was about to jump down your throat for blasphemy, when I realised that I too was like this. At first I disliked everything you described too, I didn't play BG2 for maybe 3 years after a quick 30 minute go because of this very reason.

Of course you can get OVER this small problem. Being dumped in the city was extremely overwhelming but you WILL get over it. When you just reflect at how much of a repetitive grind actually levelling characters from low is, and when you have played through 50 hours of the game and haven't even covered 1/2 of the quests, I am CERTAIN you will be able to forgive it. There is -no- straight up D&D RPG as good as this game.

Plus didn't you also hate the whole *stand in front of a rat swinging for 1 minute until you hit it* thing?

Of course I get over it, I played BG2 2-3 times and "finished" the overwhelming part, but that doesn't change the general feeling. I also would never call it "grind" in BG1, you might call it that if you play the same character everytime, but I usually like to try new classes or party members, so it is basically everytime a new game. This is less true due to the whole "you start with level 7/8" mechanic of part 2, because your character is already developed (not by playing the game but by using the menue).
I tried to continue using my characters with the megamod, but the mod was broken so it never worked. Due to the megamod I never really had the whole "1 minute until you hit a rat" experience, as you can just skip the tutorial. And after you have done that you quickly have a party and there won't be any fights that last longer without anything actually happening.

Of course the whole thing is just personal preference, it was the same in Fallout, where I enjoyed the first half of the game more than the last, because I felt that in the later stages of the game you become too powerful (even on higher difficulties).

Non linear explorer RPGs are just too rare :/

hehe felt that way when i recently installed PS:T again. once youre out of the mortuary youre in that big city with exactly no clue at all what to do. but after the first hour or so i already was sucked in and spent the next 3 days doing nothing but playing .

while it may be a bit "scary" that feeling of getting thrown into a normal big city where evrybody minds his own business and you are just a clueless guy trying to find out wtf is going on is damn cool.

The city is my favorite part of BG2, simply because of how many NPCs and options there are. It fits the situation - you're supposed to feel a bit confused at first because that's exactly how the characters are feeling. However, it's the most open part of the game and lets you explore the world a huge amount.

Well fair enough, it's horses for courses. I know what you mean about wanting to have total control and emotional attachment to a character, which is harder when the earlier levels were 'taken care of' and therefore they don't feel as much 'your baby' as they could. I still don't think that diminishes from the overall quality of the game enough to make it worse than BG1.

Also, what the hell @ NWN2. I played the game recently with a friend, hoping to enjoy it. What a vain hope. The voice acting made me want to vomit, the story and characters were completely contrived and unimpressive, the game system extremely cliché with no innovation and (well this is my prejudice) a worse method of character control than almost any other DnD RPG. The whole art design and pacing of the game makes me think it was designed for preschoolers. What an embarrassment of a game. I honestly can't help but think that people who prefer NWN to BG are simply lacking maturity. It was upsetting, because I'm still waiting for a really great RPG to come along and give me a mix of the beauty of Dragon Age and the gameplay of BG 1/2.

Has anyone played Dragon Age? I hear it's supposed to be the true spiritual successor to BG/IWD.

Well it is a great game, but only the main quests seems worthy. All the side quests seem rather half-made or pointless with a lot of re-usage of the same areas. If you want to pick up the game and play it I would recommend to get an AI/Tactics mod, because the original one is very limited and it is quite easy to end up with retarded party members.

The game is not the spiritual successor to BG/IWD even though it sort of tries. It is a very different game, but one worth playing non the less. Don't expect it to consume as much time as the BG series though as it is way more repetitive and boring combat despite the better graphics and gore.

My oppinion anyway.

Not in my eyes. The combat system of dragon age is very similiar to WoW, there is also little roleplaying and the game "feels" like an open world, but it is actually pretty linear. I was bored with it pretty fast.
