When I played it I had just finished reading the Drizzt books. Resulted in an all crushing dual mace wielding dwarfen berserker for my main character (if it was possible to just fight by charging into the enemy with your armor full of spikes and blades, i'd have done that :D ) Great game, enjoy!

Awesome game choice. And a lot of good advice in this thread. If you do get stuck at certain points (happened to me during my first play through) I recommend game banshee. Awesome guides and helpful forums.

You could also look into BG trilogy mod, which lets you play through BG1, 2 and SoA as a single story, all on BG II engine.

I haven't heard of this one. Although I know the Tutu mod did make BG1 playable in the BG2 engine(with bugs though, not sure they ever finnished it). Will definitely try this trilogy mod on my next play through.

it's sad that nobody tries to make games like bg2 anymore.
first we make expand, then we defense it.

omg BG2 is one of the greatest games I've ever played. And I'm not talking through rose-colored glasses, I only played it for my first time less than 2 years ago.

BG2 is one of the greatest RPG gaming experiences ever: explore everything and go ahead and play through multiple times with different characters (if you get bored of doing the opening dungeon again and again you can get a mod that cuts it out).
An absolutely amazing game and I'd highly recommend playing BG1 and the expansions of both games as well.
I'm so jealous that I will never be able to play the BG series for the first time again - treasure it!

Baldur's Gate Trilogy is a modification originally created by Bardez that aimed to achieve two major goals: to play Baldur’s Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast expansion using the much improved Baldur’s Gate II engine, and to generate some kind of continuity between the events of Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, Shadows of Amn, and Throne of Bhaal. Baldur's Gate Trilogy-WeiDU takes this a step further by converting the modification to WeiDU format, which has improved compatibility with other modifications.

While BGT-WeiDU remains mostly faithful to the original Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast, a number of new features have been introduced to satisfy the above goals.

* Baldur's Gate using the Baldur's Gate II engine: BGT-WeiDU is a modification installed on Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. Therefore, the story of Baldur's Gate can be experienced with the updated graphics, better resolution, and interface improvements present in Baldur's Gate II.
* Bug fixes: BGT-WeiDU includes an internal fixpack that addresses a significant number of bugs that remained in Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast. A technical list of fixes can be found in the installation package.
* Continuity from Baldur's Gate into Shadows of Amn: BGT-WeiDU uses a dynamic system to transfer players from the end of Baldur's Gate to Shadows of Amn. A cover story is used, in which the player talks to Belt after Sarevok is defeated, and NPCs are conditionally imported into Shadows of Amn depending on what fate you led them to experience in Baldur’s Gate.
* Expansive compatibility with other modifications: BGT-WeiDU is compatible with the latest versions of modifications in a mega-modification installation, as well as a large number of other fan-made modifications. This allows the player to expand the world of Baldur’s Gate to an enormously rich location to explore. A compatibility list is available in the installation package.
* Organised journal entries: BGT-WeiDU utilises a full quest journal system and ensures that all Baldur’s Gate journal entries are removed prior to the transition to Shadows of Amn. This prevents clogging up of the journal, which normally makes it hard to find important information in the journal.
* Map Notes: The advent of map notes makes it useful for the player to pin their own special locations. BGT-WeiDU comes with a number of map notes already inserted to help the player find particular buildings quickly, instead of running around like crazed chickens into every single house in a particular area.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

You sir, have embarked upon a journey that many people have experienced and all have need of. Those who do have no regrets, and those who do not will transition into the void having lived an incomplete life. Play this game, treasure and cherish the experience, suck every last succulent drop of essence from its nutritious core, and finish it. It will be something you will always remember.

When you're done, get the expansion. This game is an experience up there with the original Starcraft, Freespace 2 and FF7. You have chosen wisely.
Perhaps there is a universal, absolute truth. Perhaps it justifies every question. But that's beyond the reach of these small hands.

One of the things that impressed me the most when I first played this game was the things surrounding it. The quality of mods, FAQs and guides. Things like DSimpson's walkthrough are just insanely detailed:

Minsc, Viconia and Edwin are the best henchmen, there was also a paladin but I forgot his name.

If you wanna use spells pick sorcerer instead of mage, they have more casts per day, and there aren't many useful spells in the game anyway. Sorcerers are specially strong if you want to continue all the way to the expansion.

If you do play the expansion, kensai/mage is one of the best classes i think. Kensai up to level 13 then dual to mage.

Keep the flail of ages.
BlueLaguna on West, msg for game.

Yes. Very yes. I cannot say 'yes' hard enough to this question. The game has an incredibly detailed and engaging storyline, an extremely immersive universe based on the well established Forgotten Realms, fun gameplay mechanics, entertaining and distracting side quests without number, unforgettable characters and a brilliant villain. I really cannot think of anything the game does badly, though of course the graphics are a touch old they still get the job done.

BG2 may have outdated graphics, but the obscenely complex and well-done storyline along with the sheer amount of freedom you have throughout the game more than make up for it. The combat mechanics are also phenomenal if you like a lot of stop-and-think strategy.

I will never EVER forget Lilacor's epic comments.

Either way, BG2 is single handedly the BEST game i have ever played. The dialogs, epic story, epic battles ( anyone remember their first battle against Fiirkraag? Cause i sure do ). Ah, and putting Carsomyr to good use in Keldorns hands!

Anyways, it's a great game, and anyone with a little love for RPG's should play through it.

Also, remember to get Throne of Bhaal. While the expansion itself might not be as good, it adds a ton of cool features ( Deleting spells from your spellbooks anyone ? )

Good luck with the game.

On a side note, I'm actually installing it on my PC as we speak.

Am i the only one who thinks Keldorn is Schwazenneger's righteous twin?

As for the OP:

- Read every single text, especially spells description. A lot of spells have side effects.

- As stated before, buff/debuff are compulsory if you want to play this game, forget filling your spell books with only direct damage.

- Play lame, while setting traps where a mage is going to spawn isnt especially brave, if you are underleved (likely to happen since you won't know where to go during your first gale) this might save your life.

- Enjoy this piece of art.

I couldn't get myself really into it. If I had played it when it was new I probably would have loved it. Now when I play it, the interface and style just really, really don't work for me. I think I got about 1/2 way through the only time I played it. I might end up trying it again sometime since the story and world were interesting enough to keep my occupied.

Maybe when Winter rolls around and sticks me indoors I can try to wade my way through it again to see if it sparks my interest.
