For those of you worried about pvp who missed the post:
Just to clarify: Conquest is not the only PvP game type. We have other formats that we are not ready to talk about, so for gamescom we are focusing our information releases on formats that we are ready to talk about. We'll talk more about other PvP game types in the future.
Secondly, as I mentioned in another thread and on our social networks, the World vs. World format is still in the game. Again, for this set of information releases at gamescom/PAX, we're focusing on stuff we're ready to talk about in public. We'll have more about that in the future when we're ready to share more information about it.
Guild Wars 2 PvP features different maps that all dramatically alter a single game type called Conquest.
Yeah, get a better writer Anet. Or maybe they thought they could get away with that and as soon as shit hit the fan they had their pr "expert" pull out a quick saving statement.
Objective pvp=not an esport. We can't say it more clearly than this anet.
I think they were just trying to say that one single game type can play out multiple ways. But ya made it seem like only 1 game type total.
gvg was a broken system after iq showed to the world how to break it. so they have to go back to some other form of objective ab/hero battles type map. Having a map like hero battles that's a bit bigger and has 5 people in could be pretty fun though.
not much of an MMO guy myself, but seeing some footage, and that epic trailer from gamescom, really has me interested. But my favorite part, is on the web site, it says there is only one flat flee, and no monthly! Thats what has gotten my attention, paying monthly fees like WoW, etc, is just ridiculous and a waste of money, but these developers seem to understand that! awesome!

That's not the only way to play PvP, see below.
Summary:
Now let's sum this up for everyone to understand.
What are the different choices for PVP? So far, as listed, you will be able to participate in WvW, Hot Join PvP, and Tournament Play.
WvW - Separate from Hot Join, as it falls into exclusive world vs world battles. Considered to be a more erratic and unstructured PvP experience.
Hot Join - A Battleground-type system where you can do anything from 1v1 to 10v10 on a number of maps. Players will be able to come and go as they please. This mode is essentially aimed to be the "training" mode it seems for players wanting to get to tournament level.
Tournament Play - 5v5 setup that encourages players to play at a higher level via a series of steps. Basically once you have your 5v5 man group, you may enter into Pickup Tournaments, which can happen anytime there are 8 teams ready to play. By winning a pickup tournament, you earn qualifier points to be redeemed for attendance in a "monthly" tournament. Winners from monthly tournaments are pulled together to form the Yearly tournament, the top tier.
Player-Run tournaments also exist, although separately from the other official systems. They will be customized/created by the players/communities themselves.
Now that we have explained those main points, here are some other key notes to take from their article. • Downed players in PVP can be "finished". Simply pressing F while near a downed enemy will start an animation to finish them off, immediately sending them to a defeated state. • In PvP, you are immediately buffed to max level, and given a starter set of skills. When you go back to PvE, you will go back to what you had before you entered PvP. Simple. • You will instantly unlock skills and items in PvP, for PVP mode.
We hope you find the new ArenaNet article/our summary exciting, as its the first dose of solid info we've received in awhile. Be sure to check out the latest trailer as well, made to be displayed at Gamescom 2011.
Like: Ability to move around freely, jump out windows etc. Gives many possibilities for some big plays. Dislike: I'm still not a fan of all this big numbers. What was wrong with having 400 hp and 50 mana? 9k floating damage numbers and 16k hp on a thief seem not very guildwarsy to me. One of the things I liked in GW was the simplicity and not overdoing it with high numbers like most mmos tend to have. And what the hell with this jump-into-air-charge-up-slow-motion-drop-down-animation attack that seems to be present on every char? Is it supposed to be this "I kill you!" animation on a downed foe? Not a fan of that either.

I agree on the big numbers. It was one of the reasons why i disliked WoW... several million HP ist just so wrong.
GW with the low HP and relatively high damage was simply a lot more fast paced and everything just felt more natural. You could die fast but you could also kill fast. Most videos i see look like "press 1 for 5 minutes until your level 1 enemy is dead and don't worry, even as an elementalist it can hit you a thousand times without killing you".

Didn't you guys quit like earlier than half the way in? I know it's hard to take it if you're not from europe, but nightfall gvg was like when starcraft players discovered macro.
@manitou: if you had 400 hp and 50 mana there was something very wrong with you. Unless your name is polly you're not allowed to have any +3 runes in a pvp environment and if you sat on your high mana set i'd be eating you alive.
