The one thing that GW doesn't show is people's energy, but you can perfectly tell anyone's mana by their weapon sets, by the "status" tab in the observer window and by the way they play. While this is true, I thought Disciple7 was talking about casual observers here, and requiring the general public to keep close track of weapon swaps and skill usage and positioning and stuff is asking a bit much, I think.
This. How many people do you really think even KNOW what weapon sets do? I'm not talking about competitive players, I'm talking about the people that just wanna watch.
1) I was giving an example of the worst case scenario.
2) Cool, you just said exactly what I said. Good job!

In the original GW all observers were synced onto one instance of the game and had a dedicated chat server for each game. You could ask anything that wasn't clear in chat and people would answer you.
And you completely ignored the fact that there is a status bar. If there had been energy bars I would guess your argument would be "why am i supposed to look at mana bars? Why can't the game just tell me in plain text what is going on!!!1!"
|
Yes, you could ask other people. But that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be friendlier to a casual-observer if more information was easily displayed. And I hope you didn't mean that you could just keep asking about energy levels and stuff, 'cause that would be a stupid workaround. I think you were replying to Disciple7 writing, "How many people do you really think even KNOW what weapon sets do?" But there, he wasn't saying, "If they knew, all the problems would be solved." He was saying, "In order for weapon sets to be informative, you have to watch them, but you also have to understand what they do and what the differences between the sets are in the first place."
Also, one of the problems with hexes in GW1, according to Anet, was that they made pvp hard for lots of noobs because they had to learn a whole lot of different unique effects, and then had to be able to quickly identify them by name/icon/casting animation/whatever. If that is too much to ask of beginning competitors, then watching item swaps is too much to ask of beginning observers. But first-time observers matter when you're trying to make things more accessible to a broader audience (again, not an audience of players, though that's important, too, but an audience of spectators), which is good for esports, which is what this was all about in the first place.
As for the "next you'll be asking them to tell you in plain text what's going on!" exaggeration, displaying energy bars is like having production and econ tabs in SC2. You don't need them to follow the action (we did fine in BW!), but, again, they make things easier to follow for a broader audience.
Of course, you don't need to give tons of detailed information to observers to make things easier to follow. It's a balance. But once we're agreed that knowing something is valuable (maybe not necessary, but still helpful) for observers (and you seemed to agree about this with energy bars in your first post on the subject), I don't see why we should settle for a workaround that takes additional effort on the observer's part when we can easily and unobtrusively make it more obvious, more direct, and basically effortless.

I personally would like to see a free-fly camera. Although energy bars and such would be nice, it would have the opposite effect to outsiders as well, drawing them away from the scene because they wouldnt have a clue what theyre looking at.
Lets not forget they will be offering a lot of things like this in a mobile platform as well, can you imagine watching matches/battlefield progress from your phone, or browser?

I'm just hoping for action bars I can change. I think the current one looks like utter shit and I hate bars where I have to constantly change to get all my new attacks. I'd prefer to have all of my attacks for all my weapons shown and just swap it out the weapons or whatever and have the attacks I can't use just grayed out or something. It's how I played a Warrior in WoW in terms of Stances and it would just feel too awkward doing what they have now IMO.
I know I'm a major minority in that category of preference, but I hope the option is out there otherwise I'll be waiting for a mod to come.
EDIT: To clarify. Instead of having 5 Bow attacks and having to press X to swap to my Melee and have 5 separate attacks on my hotbar, I would prefer to have all 10 attacks shown at once, even if I obviously can't use all 10 at once. Partly to have different keybinds for them, and partly just out of personal preference.

I'm afraid they won't let you do that, all MMOs including WoW are trying to have their players have very few buttons displayed at the same time. And as far as I remember most wow players used stance sensitive macros to free up keybinds.
I don't see gw2 development coming up with additional onscreen spellbars either.

I would imagine they would give in to an extent the idea that most MMO players coming to play their game (wow players) are probably looking for UI customization, or expect it.

I would honestly be surprised if they didn't allow some form of UI customization -- mod or otherwise. It would not be gamebreaking or something, but it would be surprising for sure.

Another Lore update.
ArenaNet released another tidbit of lore today, a race known as the "Quaggans". Although on the outside, they may appear harmless, perhaps cute to some, but when angered, they turn into ferocious beasts capable of doing great harm. "Quaggans are peaceful by nature and rarely become aggressive unless provoked. When quaggans are threatened or in pain, their adrenaline levels surge and parts of their skin turn a dark-scarlet hue. Fangs erupt from their mouths and their flippers grow long, formidable talons. While in this state, instinct overcomes rational thought and the quaggan is little more than an aquatic engine of destruction. They are deeply embarrassed when they display such aggression, and it is considered a social faux pas among their people." Basically, if they turn blue, that means run away, or prepare for a fight. It's nice to see some more information come out of the design halls of ArenaNet, and we hope more comes soon. If you would like to read the full article, here is a link. http://www.arena.net/blog/the-mostly-harmless-quaggan

Guild Wars two will burn a path of glory into the history of mmos so bright that it will never be forgotten.

Guild Wars 1 was ok as far as a single player run through was concerned, PvP, especially Hall of Heroes was horrendous. For PUGs it took me 2 months to get r6 Hero just to be noticed for a real structured GvG/HoH guild. PvE is ok as far as a challenge is concered, I'll probably will pick up GW2 just to check it out, but D3 will be a lot better as far as accessibility imo.

For anyone else looking to do a blog, or create a website. ArenaNet released a fansite kit for developers.
Its nothing too special, but it has some high res images that are nice for signatures/wallpapers.

For all of you guys who love discussing Guild Wars 2 in-depth, I'd like to invite you to our GW2 forum for teamliquid members to promote/discuss the game. The reason I bring this up now is to have you guys entered into a raffle we're holding for those who have quality posts and threads to create, much like you find all over TeamLiquid.net. (looking at pyrthas and others )
We're trying to establish the image TeamLiquid has for SC here, in the same light for GW2 there. You get the idea. We're redesigning the forums, coding new databases for future ideas, and want to start promoting now. All of our current members live and breathe Starcraft here in teamliquid, and then carry on a multitude of discussions on Guild Wars there.
Long story short. If you like these kinds of discussions/debates, we'd like to invite you over to join your other fellow TLers who have made their guild/home there, and others who simply enjoy the atmosphere Teamliquid continues to encourage here.
www.teamlegacy.net
Hope to see you there for Guild Wars 2 related content.
