its funny how so many people are complaining about elementalist being underpowered.
I saw this video

copied his build and I don't see me losing to anyone in 1v1 and arenanet is probably buffing us after so many complaints. lol
by far the funniest and hardest profession in the game.
Part of the inhumanity of the computer is that, once it is competently programmed and working smoothly, it is completely honest.

Made a mesmer alt and its so much fun in WvW, PvE isnt bad either. I think I like my mesmer at level 14 more than my level 45 Elementalist.

Just wait until you start not being able to tackle that +1lvl veteran because it has 2 normal mobs with him and you don't have a lot of aoe ... Mesmer is probably the best and most versatile field leader in any party or 1v1 but as soon as you are against more than one opponent without support you are going to die all the time.

I don't agree at all! my mesmer is great at handling multiple enemies without dying. whats your build?

as for AOE i use staff so i have that aoe field thing and then im mass shattering which is also AOE

im still leveling so i can only speak for the part of the game im at but my gear isnt good or anything and right now i can easily take on 3 lvl 49-50 mobs and im lvl 46

It totally depends on your build. I'm using a condition (confusion/dmg reflection mostly) build because of the solo roaming I do in WvW so in PvE I have a lot of troubles spreading i especially against skelk or skritt who hit like trucks. Also usually staff is the key component of condition builds because of the warlock but in my opinion less useful in shatter builds.

Edit : The confusion build is thought to get rid of builds such as the D/D elementalist and every other kind of obnoxious spammy glass cannon roaming around in PvP and WvW, I still need to have some more survivability though.

Alright folks I really want this game, but with the stop on digital downloads how can I get it? I would go to a game store, but as I live in Korea it's impossible to just go out and buy the game. I tried play.com, as I'm British, but alas I cannot buy as they are awaiting stock.

I understand the reasons, but its still fucking stupid to have no way for me to buy the game off their website

flicky's GW2 Weekend recap
Had a weekend chock full of GW2 PvP and I'm really getting into it. For the first time since WoW arena I've felt really compelled to play a PvP game just to improve and get good. Having a real blast.

I dinged 80 on Friday night so I'm basically done with PvE for now until I have reason to go back there. I'll explore zones and that in the future (because I'd like to see them) and I guess I'll finish up my story at some point. The story is improving dramatically but getting to the missions themselves is becoming tough. I mastered cooking before the Butter nerf (as we like to call it) and will probably try and master Huntsman just because. Still got dungeons to do.

More importantly however, let's talk about PvP:

I've been spamming tournaments all weekend, trying to really figure out the maps. I feel comfortable on Node-Defender Engineer in many cases (but I get rusty real quickly) and I have made massive progress with my PowerNade (mix Power King with Bionade while playing for ultimate victory) Rifle build. I'm going to come back and tweak it more but I think it's definitely a viable choice right now. I swapped out Utility Goggles for a bunch of things and have currently settled on Net Turret.

Some (somewhat obvious) Theory on Glass Cannons
Working on PowerNade, I was trying to figure out what my character needed to make it work. Talking with other classes (Elementalists in particular) I've found that a lot have trouble figuring out what to do, ie the real basics of the playstyle. So what I did is think long and hard and hence came up with what I need to do to be successful as a glass cannon Engineer.

Poke, Stall, Engage, Burst & Disengage (not necessarily in that order).

Once I figured out how to do all these things it became a case of guaranteeing each part. While I won't claim to have guaranteed disengages (or even anything else), I've made massive progress and started to see this build as legitimate. A simple example is below.

Teamfight at Graveyard (Foefire, my favourite place to be ranged)

It's 4v4 and we pick a warrior target. There's a Guardian, Ranger and Thief with them.
From a safe spot, I started to poke down the warrior. (safe positioning guarantees poke)
Meanwhile, a thief is approaching so with Net Shot, I stall his engage and move away. (my build has three immobilises so this is almost assured)
I screw up and the thief gets the engage on me. I use a panic button (Elixir S) to make distance followed by a knockback to push the thief down from my raised level (Overcharged Shot).
Now that I've disengaged I return to poking the Warrior and he goes down.
The thief returns but at reduced health and this time I want to engage on my terms (never initate on their terms)
I know I can burst him down quickly so it's about guaranteeing this burst. If you whiff it and they hit, you're at a disadvantage.
I have my immobilises up, I count out his evades and hit him with net shot -> Grenade Barrage.
Control with an Overcharged Shot, re-engage with another Net and Jump Shot-> dead thief.
Return to poking and damaging remaining enemies and wait for another burst oppurtunity.

Due to the nature of dodges and so on this game is as much about making plays using setups as Fighting Games or WoW arena. Once I realised this I came up with a number of setups and adapted my skills to focus on the points of Poke (Rifle/Grenades), Stalling (Nets, Slows), Engaging (Nets, Toss Elixir S), Burst (Blunderbuss, Jump Shot & Grenade Barrage are all massive burst skills) and Disengaging (Elixir S, Swiftness, Nets). After that it's just a case of being able to recover between fights.

What you'll notice for a lot of big burst skills is how hard they are to guarantee. Just watch a new Elementalist try to hit their burst (or try it yourself) to understand this. Hell, try hitting a Jump Shot without any CC, even if you target correctly you'll probably get blown back before you land. Once I built to ensure my burst hit, the success rate flew up. Even better was when I could guarantee other people's burst (you ever been immobilised infront of a stabilised Hundred Blades? Don't curse ANet, blame the Engineer who set it up). As time goes by and I get better at knowing when to engage (I could feel it improving over the weekend) I actually felt dangerous, rather than gimmicky, even in 1v1. Think how scary the Thiefy Motion and Hundred Blades guys would be if they set up properly? I'm not getting rid of Elixir S because I'm scared of facing one who gives me no other option.

Goddamn disengaging is important in this game. Once you've learnt how you are worth twice what you were before.

About Thieves
Despite laughing my way through most thieves (my favourite is when it's obvious how much they're mashing 2) since launch, I picked up my own thief and went looking for builds. Desperate to not be the thief Heart Seeking his way off ledges and down cliffs or the thief stuck in Pistol Whip while everyone kills him, I looked around for the Condition builds and found something I really wanted. There's a condition thief build on Team Paradigm (listed as Offensive Support in the thief guide) that is exactly what I had in mind. You fly all over the map, whittle down your opponents and constantly disengage and re-engage. It has the consistant damage of a mesmer (using Ambush and Thief's Guild) while invisible combined with the constant ticking of conditions. It gives buffs to allies and has great survivability through the skills. It uses Pistol/Dagger (manly) and can 1v1 everything I've come across (yes, mesmers too). If you're jonesing for a more legitimate thief experience, go find this build, join some friends in tournament and have a blast. Combined with my two Engineer builds, I feel comfortable that I can bring something to every team now in 5v5. Just working on my healing Engi build...

About Tournament Maps (We call the map Niffleful so I don't actually know the name)
I'm in a pickle here. There's Niflhel, Foefire & Kyhlo in tournaments in that order. My friends and I are definitely very happy on Niflhel and Foefire. We have strats we like and that seem effective yet we only get to play the first round on this map. I've only lost first map once and that was in a PuG that was just a horribly sloppy game and doesn't really fit in to my point. When we do get good games, we still come out ahead and we're fine with Niflhel.

I have grown to love Foefire and we have done really well since sorting out our team-fighting at Graveyard. I absolutely think the builds I use excel on this map (Node Defender at Quarry, PowerNade at Graveyard and Offensive Support Thief everywhere). We've even run no defenders and still won here consistantly. Odds are if we make it here, we win again and we definitely feel that the opponents are better.

The problem we have is Kyhlo. What the hell is a good strat on Khylo? I made it to Khylo about 15 times over the weekend and won twice (only five were as a full group, the rest as pairs or triplets). All games we played well but we just couldn't take it. We kept swapping strats about and our eventual win was probably because the other team opted to not Treb at all. We lost our last game (after finding someone who trebbed well and could 1v1) because they could always treb. I killed the mesmer on treb about four times.

Can you guys just let me know if my new plan is good: I'll play thief on the map and 1v1 their treb user, try and destroy it then just be in a position to gank whenever they get repair kit? Is that even feasible? I didn't get a chance to really try it. What do other people do on Kyhlo? (note: I'm not blaming my team-mates for these games because it's very hard to know the situation. It could have been that we were just outplayed every time). We're currently doing one to our base, two to clock tower, one to treb and one to kill their treb user to start. Then it just all goes down hill.

Summary
Goddamn these are getting long. I love playing this game. I hope you enjoy these and hopefully learn something from them and it helps you out. If you want a guide for PowerNade or anything just ask. If you have advice for me it would be much appreciated. Just talking about the game helps out tremendously.

About balance: Well they've done a pretty good job so far. Some classes and builds are weaker in 1v1 but remember, 1v1 is not what the game is balanced around, it's 5v5 (in TBC people thought WoW should be balanced around 2v2 or Duels). I've also not come up against anyone I couldn't beat in subsequent fights after going against them once. If I did lose, I knew why. Stelllar job to ANet on this one considering. It's not perfect yet but a brilliant start.

Butter was OP chocolate needed a buff.

Also could you maybe talk about each of the classes in PvP? Also is there any incentive to just skip pvp and grind till 80?

Butter was totally balanced but these stupid noobs made so much noise that ANet caved in and catered to the casuals.

What do you mean by talking about each of the classes? Do you mean a how to 1v1 a class, general tips on their play or what? I'm not really qualified to talk about how to play many of them but I can share my experience on what I think of them.

8v8 I play to gauge effectiveness of a build before tournaments, to get some glory or to fill time while waiting for friends or between games. It is pretty zergy (not unmanagebly so) and is definitely a just-for-fun part of PvP. If you ever find yourself getting mad in 8v8, you need to take a break.

For tournaments, you can queue as any number of people, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. I don't think the matchmaking changes depending on your party though, it's just 8 random teams. Solo queue is probably best for general information gathering, be it finding strategies from other players, seeing builds or working on 1v1. If you have four different roles, you can join solo and get some random practice. I wouldn't get worked up about solo queue but it's good fun. Where 8v8 is fun, solo 5v5 is practice.

I would only join a paid tournament solo if I had a bunch of tickets and a plan and you'll probably want to do it as a group, at least until you're confident. You can get tickets quite easily for tournaments but be aware, while you may think you'll only get the really good guys in a solo paid, there are a lot of people who just do paid anyway and get angry if they lose. I would compare solo paid to LoL or DotA solo queues (although quite as flamey). The finals will be hard 90% of the time but the rest is still winnable so don't be scared. Play enough and you'll probably just do paid all the time.

I've been spamming tournaments all weekend

I have only played the hot-join 8vs8 so far and gathered some tournament tickets by doing so. 8vs8 feels awfully zergy though, can I join tournaments solo and more so is it viable to do them solo or would I just be wasting my tickets?

Do yourself a flavor and do some 5v5 tournament.
It's way better. The difference is like playing competitive 1v1 and teamgames in Starcraft.

Paid tournaments aren't launch yet, just keep the ticket for later use.

What do you mean by talking about each of the classes? Do you mean a how to 1v1 a class, general tips on their play or what? I'm not really qualified to talk about how to play many of them but I can share my experience on what I think of them.

huh, not grinding anything, just leveling by exploring and doing crafting, got my third char (mesmer) lvl 64 now with nothing else, rarely do any events, just exploring etc ~_~ only thing i dont like that much is that crafting feels more like a chore than anything else, specially with all the 8 fangs etc u need to craft shit

You have the wrong definition of grinding my friend. Grinding in an mmo is killing mobs over and over for exp. Then there's quest grinding, which isn't actual grinding. This game you can get literally half your levels never touching a quest. Just exploring and doing the vistas/PoI's. Not to mention you dont actually have to level to do wvwvw and spvp. There's really no gear grind at the end (unless you want the legendary stuff).

Basics aside for killing thieves (someone posted the video which is simple enough), my main advice as a Necro is to be liberal with your use of Death Shroud. That can mean all their burst is useless because it wasn't even health. Burst thieves cannot outlast anything and Necromancers are pretty good at it. If you're running staff, you can throw down Wells and Clouds everywhere once they stealth too. If you're running Flesh Golem, charge works to stop their burst. You also have so much base health that Heartseeker takes forever to do anything.

It depends on your definition of grind. The game rewards you no matter how you play the game, be it exploration, dungeons, dynamic events, WvW, sPvP, crafting, etc. Simply do what you enjoy doing and you will eventually be rewarded from it.

I've seen some people complain that they don't instantly have max stat gear the second they ding 80, which is ridiculous to assume that. The only real grind is for the unique skins (same stats as cheaper gear just cooler looking). There are a ton of unique skins that are obtained doing specific things, so if you have to have a certain skin you may be "forced" to grind a certain game mode that you do not enjoy. But it's just for the skin, so it's really optional in a sense.
