I will not be super-serious about GW2 and don't expect the guild to be super serious either. Once I get the guild set up I will post about it here. I would appreciate it if this post could be linked in the OP. Thanks. If you have questions/suggestions for anything let me know. I will try to read every post in this thread but you can PM me if you want to make sure I don't miss something. Assuming this guild doesn't fail I will probably create a separate forum at some point.
Thanks crate! I'd certainly be willing to help out in some capacity if you need any assistance, just don't think I'd have the know how to do a TL guild justice at this point.
As for a name, here's a few suggestions: 'The Liquid Factory' in honor of TL and the TLAF sponsorship 'Supply Blocked' obvious SC reference 'Liquid Deathball'
Personally I'd like to try and work the word liquid in the name somehow: Liquid, Liquidean, etc. Seems like Team Legacy kinda already grabbed the TL moniker in the community, so I don't know how a guild name with a TL acronym would be received

Why not just do it like in LoL and call it LiquidParty if it's supposed to be a more relaxed guild?

That was a pretty informative link, helped my understanding a bit more. One thing I found rather funny though:
In pretty much every MMO, everyone has a defined role. These roles are Tank, DPS, and Healer. Where based on your class/spec you do one of these roles and only that role. Those roles don't exist in GW2. GW2s combat is built with control, damage, and support in mind.
Sounds a bit familiar to me lol
EDIT: Picked Jade Quarry as the server since it seems like a lot of former DAoC players will be rolling there, and the one friend I do have playing still has a boner for DAoC and kept a lot of contacts from his RvR days so he's pushing me in that direction. I guess worse comes to worse I can always xfer later if that doesn't work out or we end up on Jade Quarry

One thing that I feel I need to bring up a lot, is that ArenaNet said early on in some fucking video I refuse to go dig up that they wanted to base their combat more around DotA than games like WoW. Where you have everyone doing consistent amounts of damage, but without there being a healing/tank dynamic. You can notice, in DotA, how there are supports and these supports help in many different ways. Changing the terrain, giving buffs to damage or mitigation, and even some small heals, and controlling the fight through various forms of CC and snares. That's what we're seeing here more or less. Everyone is doing damage, but you're responsible for your own health and there is no healing/tank dynamic but many, many ways to support in various different ways.

@crate: Thank you very much. I would really love to help but because of the school commitment, I could not full time lead the guild anymore. But if you need some help in the guild, I will try to help out as much as I could.
EdIT: For the name of the guild, I would suggest that we can use the name "Team Taeja" as a reference

Damn... every video I see of this game looks incredibly choppy and laggy. ;(

I would suggest "Winged Horse"... which actually still my favorite TL shirt design

So today was the first time I've had the opportunity to play the game as I just purchased last night, and I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed based on all the hype the game has gotten.
First, maybe it was because I picked charr, or maybe because I chose guardian, but I was moving slow as shit. Compared to the speed and pace of other games, it honestly felt like I was crawling to my next destination versus the feeling of actually running on all fours.
Combat, although I wasn't able to see much and only had some basic skills, doesn't feel much different then many other MMOs. I'm not going to make any judgements outside of that because I didn't experience enough combat to form a real opinion, but it still felt like I was targeting mobs, attacking, and moving on once they were dead. Compared to TERA which I was playing up until recently, the game doesn't feel much like free targeting, which I thought was something advertised. Since I don't have much experience though I could very well just be doing it wrong.
Environments, sounds, aesthetics, all beautiful. Everything seems very well polished and should help the immersion immensely imo. Any NPC with a name will have some sort of conversation you can have with them.
Again these are all very early and quick impressions. For someone like myself who hasn't followed the game at all and just started getting info this week, the game hasn't changed the way I view MMOs by any standard, but it certainly looks like a solid 8.5 or 9/10, and hell it's free to play once you buy it so can't really beat that for all the content you'll be getting.

1) Fast Travel is your friend
2) I dont feel people truly experience the combat until they start to get into the Utility skills. That's when it REALLY starts to open up. Plus, you were playing Guardian. A general support/melee class. You should definitely try out something like Elementalist or Engineer next time around. The game isn't as "free target" as TERA, don't come into this with that misconception. But it's definitely not target and bash skills like other games either.
3) Wait until you find the jump puzzles
But hey, it's all opinions and shit.
|
Honestly based on what I've seen so far, I'm going to have more fun trying to find all the waypoints/POI/viewpoints then actually fighting. And I've heard about these jump puzzles, one of my favorite things to do in wow was clipping up mountains and buildings trying to get to normally unreachable areas, so these sound right up my alley.
I'm probably gonna be going guardian since the friend I'll be playing with is rolling a ranger, so I was figuring a heavy support class can definitely help in small scale pvp situations and just in general.
I actually think I might attempt to level a character purely crafting at some point later on just to say I did it lol

well you didnt get to experience much of GW2 imo. The world's beautiful and large, with tons of stuff to do. Even crafting feels oddly satisfying, something no other games have ever done for me. The jumping puzzles & vistas and all the points of interest combined with a extremely fleshed out world makes for a engaging PVE experience.
PVP wise i loved WvWvW, but only if it was a fair fight. When all 3 servers are engaging in combat and swapping territory and what not, it made for a insanely fun experience...with various strategies working out etc. Simple example would be striking the back supply camps to disrupt supply caravans bringing essential supplies to the frontal keeps. Such things do matter in WvW as supplies are very very important.
All in all, GW2 is easily a 9/10 on my score. I can see myself playing for a long time to come.

I agree with everything you said, as of right now it appears to be the combat I had the most issues with, but considering I didn't see much of it I'm sure my mind will change a bit once I get the full combat experience

It's never fair to judge an MMO by the first 4-5 hours of playtime. Really, it's not fair to judge any RPG after that much time, either. In MMOs, you usually have no idea what you're doing, you don't know what you COULD be doing, and you aren't exposed to the more advanced game systems because you're in the newbie mode.
Though, I also didn't much like the Charr zone. Norn and Human I've enjoyed quite a bit more. Asura is full of stuff to do but it is almost overload to me.

Well, I'm convinced Axe/Warhorn + Longbow is an amazing and possibly the best combination for the Ranger. Used with traits sigil of stone (talented gets you 6 sec of invulnerability) and the one that makes next 5 attacks bleed. Pick up the talent that grants bleeds upon critical hits.
Pop your 5 on the warhorn for buff, pop the bleed trait, smash someone with 5 bleeds from the 2 axe if they're close or 4 them with the longbow and channel 2 if they're not, a lot of the 2 channel will go off while they're stunned stacking up a lot of bleeds very quickly in addition to how much natural power damage the 2 on longbow does. Lynx pet works great for additional bleed conditions to apply extra damage and Wolf as off-pet for the fear. The elite skill that buffs all your stats just adds even more burst to this build.

I found the Charr zone to be sort of lame compared to the Human zone, the flow there was much better. The Sylvari one wasn't bad either.
The combat isn't "free target" really. If you mash a skill it'll hit whats in front of you even without targeting a mob. If you shoot an arrow and there is a mob between you and your target you'll hit that mob instead, it doesn't just magically go to what you had targeted but it's not a twitch shooter either =P Certainly better than the standard MMO stuff.

I can get on board with what you're saying in MMOs as I've played enough of them to know there is still an incredible amount I haven't seen or played yet, but to say you can't judge a game like skyrim or kotor after 4-5 hours sounds like you aren't paying attention. Most single player rpgs the gameplay doesn't change much once you get through all the tutorial stuff imo.
In regards to targeting, what exactly then is the point of being able to target anything in the first place. In TERA the only point to target anything really was just to see the % of how much hp they had left, other then that you had a hp bar over the creature's head, which seems to be present in this game as well. I guess my real question is are there any skills that are targeting based, as in without a target selected you can't use the skill? Is it more for pvp so you can keep an eye on someone's health that isn't in your group? I'm just struggling to make sense of why you would give the player the option to target if it isn't fully needed. And if it isn't needed, is there an option to turn it off? (though i suppose i can just unbind the key)
Sounds like the Charr zone may be the issue though, so I'll probably just roll a different race on launch

I'm also thinking of playing GW2 at release but Diablo III 1.04 patch threw a spanner in the works. So, maybe I may play this a month later.
A few questions (based on your experience on GW1): - How is catchup leveling like? - What are the strengths of the game? PvP experience or PvE?
I'll probably ask more as people get to experience more of the game

You can get to the different race starting zones like 2 seconds into the game so don't let the starting area make you pick your race. You have to do the first mission (kill a boss of some sort) then just open the PvP menu and click "Go to the mists", from there find the portal to Lions Arch, then the portal to the city of your choice, done. So, pick the race you like the looks of and go elsewhere if you want.
I haven't touched any of the stress tests so haven't played in like a month. But the point of targeting is mostly for keeping that target your focus. They're easier to track in a crowd and when you do hit a skill that jumps at the target that'll be who you go for. Leaping Death Blossom on a thief you jump and spin in the air, you'll always go to your target even if they're not in range. If you spam it you'll keep jumping towards them. So they do have a purpose. Not sure on being able to turn it off, don't see why you would so kind of doubt there's the option to.

Leveling is pretty easy so don't worry about it. Your friends can always come and level with you, they're brought down to the level of the area you're in, they still get xp/loot. So there's really no excuse to not hook up with your poor lowbie friends in this game!
The PvE is different, I like it. But if you're expecting to have like 2013980128412983190 raid zones you're playing the wrong game. It's definitely a PvP focused game, but the PvE is fun with the combat.
