I'm pumped for Guild Wars 2 to come out, but I recently moved to norway until the spring/summer of 2013 and don't have my desktop with me. I'll have to buy a new laptop and settle for a fast internet connection ( in Gjovik atm; there are some good connections but expensive to install etc.). So if I decide to get the game I'll probably order for it online around the 25th of august. That being said until then I'm not playing anything and am looking to get informed on Guild Wars 2 and how to try and get myself started on the game.
Quick questions: 1. I understand it's not WoW-like. There is a cap to farm/grind/pve content and you don't have to play a lot of it to have the BiS items. Is that right or not? 2. Could you link me to a quick guide on how to started? 3. Is it worth it to prepurchase just for some of the perks ( I'd say not ) 4. 30MB DL/20MB UP internet connection will run fine?

1. If I remember correctly its a token system by completing dungeons. But compared to WoW there shouldn't be many tier of gear at level max (if any...). There are also no raid content but they promised some hard 5man dungeons. There are some World bosses though. Edit: From the guide in #2
Dungeons – At launch there will be 8 dungeons, but don’t fret! This doesn’t mean they’re the same static thing over and over again.Like everything else in the game, ArenaNet is shaking up how dungeons work as well. Every dungeon has a Story mode and an Exploration mode. The Story mode uses concept art and exposition to tell the story similar to the Personal Story. After completing the Story mode of a dungeon, you will unlock Exploration mode. Exploration mode is significantly harder than the Story mode version. Story mode is meant for pretty much any random pick up group, whereas Exploration mode is very difficult content that is meant for a coordinated group of players. Whatever results come of the Story mode version will play out in the Exploration version of the dungeons. Each of the Exploration dungeons have at least 3 paths that the group can vote on that will determine what path they take. The Dynamic Event system is also present in both versions of the dungeons, so even if you play through multiple times, that doesn’t mean you’ll see the same exact thing. Bonus events could spawn from player actions, by location or even at random and change your experience.
But what about the loot you ask?
Every dungeon has its own unique weapon and armor sets. The Story mode has the unique weapons and the Exploration mode has the unique armor sets. When you complete a dungeon you'll be given a token that's used as a currency for either weaopons or armor. So rather than grinding a single dungeon 20 times in hopes that you get what you're looking for, you can just take the token and buy exactly what you want.
3. The main attraction for prepurchase is the access to the beta. If you're unsure about the buy or not interested in playing the next Beta week end, you can wait for release. Also prepurchases get a 3 days headstart before global release.

1. When you hit max level and do max level events you will get max level gear really fast. The gear is all horizontal instead of vertical like other MMORPG's. However with the downscaling feature you have ALL the content in the game open for you without overpowering it. Did you miss a zone or dungeon when you leveled? Great, do it on max level and still get rewards. You also have achievements, titles, pets, crafting, gear farming (want another look on your gear or maybe get the perfect stats for your spec), puzzles and much more. 2. Mass info for the unitiated is a great thread with all you ever need to know about Guild Wars 2. 3. The only real perk you get from pre purchasing is a 3 day headstart so you can play on the 25th.
Wowie! Thats so much information on the game! Should answer almost any question anyone would ever have! I will have to continue reading it tomorrow though. The more I read about the game the more excited I become for the game. I already think about it everyday, jeez !

Found something, 40mb dl / 10mb up. Can you play MMO's/MOBA with that ?
Also, it seems that getting jewelcrafting and cooking would serve my engineer best
40/10 is more than enough, in WvW you need a pretty good comp tho.

Thank you for your time.
1. Yes that's right. Max stat amor and weapons will be avaible very fast compared to other mmo's (through drops, karma-merchants etc.). However if you want to grind, you can for prestige armor that looks very unique. It's basically the same system as in gw1 but a bit more grindy I think.
2. I don't answer to this, guides are something you can ask for, if you really don't get something (and I mean if you tried like really really hard).
3. If you want to buy it, just do it. Prepurchase isn't more expensive then the releaseversion. So if you know you will buy it at release you can also buy it now and play 3 days ahead.
Just wanted to mention that I look forward to playing with the Team Legacy guys and that hopefully we end up on the same server.
I'll be playing with my aussie guild Oceanian (formerly Dark Disciples from Swtor). Hopefully we'll be able to join Ascension alliance and represent the downunder contingent
Anyone have an extra beta weekend key? I played GW1 and thought it was pretty fun, so I wouldn't mind giving it a try. US server preferred but anything works.
Okay Im sort of on the fence about the endgame.. getting there I'm sure will be a fun adventure but I have a troubling feeling that things might get stale at the end for 2 reasons: 1 Since the only real rewards in continuing are skill points and legendary weapons(which I don't know how much I care for something that will only improve my characters appearance..lame) and 2. would have to be the fact that there is no only end game content where i will only experience it in the end of the game. This could be a toss up for a lot of people because some people don't want to have to wait until lvl 80 to experience a part of the game but me on the other hand want something to look forward to when getting to lvl 80 besides an extra skill point so i feel it will get stale because at lvl 80 im doing the same things i did the entire game.
I might be missing something here but If i'am PLEASE correct me lol

Did you watch the video? They mentioned in that video there will be level 80 only areas. Like dungeons, events, etc. So you're not just being rewarded w/ the skill points for doing the content. I'm sure you get loot from the dungeons but it sounds like the Mystic Forge will be how you get your end game loot, so it's just a choice of what things do you want to do for your skill points. I'm not 100% cause I've not been in beta but that's what I took away from the vid.

So I just got a key the other day and was hoping someone could give me their impressions on some classes I'm interested in, namely engineer. According to the polls I saw engineer was the least popular class out of them all, is there a reason for that? Does the damage suck, crappy survivability, or just not very fun to play? I'm not particularly a fan of immobile turret classes, are they really reliant on them? And if anyone had some brief experience with thief/ranger and could share what they liked/disliked that would be cool too

Played a thief about 50% of the time (other 50% being mesmer) Most people seem to recommend some kind of poison spam build but I focused on more of a sustained combat build so my opinion might be different from others.
Advantages: - Fun unique style of gameplay with more freedom due to initiative mechanic - Stealth is cool - Initiative regens slowly without the faster initiative in stealth trait (where it comes back REALLY fast, like 1.5 a second) - Strongest combat "control" in game due to stealth (ability to disengage at will) - Can stay stealth for a long time (30s~, tested by me) - Steal is a good profession mechanic despite what other people say due to it giving you a good item to use (most of the time) - I'll add more later if I can remember it lol
Disadvantages: - Skillspam = GG - CANNOT directly engage other professions head on (HAS to abuse stealth to weave in and out of combat) - Low base hp, I traited toward a more defensive style and had a 23~k hp pool while my friend (who was using a glass cannon elementalist build) has around 18~k - Low weapon count (sword is apparently pretty bad and dagger/dagger is what you'll be using for direct combat quite a bit (due to it mostly outshining other weapon sets)

Also Engineer hits REALLY hard apperntly
That's great, thanks. I heard there weren't too many gap closers at the moment so if other classes are paying attention they just keep the thief at range forever in PvP, so they mostly rely on ranged attacks and stuns etc.

It's pretty hard to keep the thief at range in PvP due to steal and cripple from dagger/dagger and in the acrobatics line you can get swiftness on dodge (or I was just vsing bad players lol)
Also if worst comes to worst the pistol/pistol combo was pretty strong when you abused smoke combo fields to apply blindness on him to increase your chances of out dpsing the other classes. Classes that relied on projectile weapons were also at a pretty big disadvantage and I would occasionally switch to pistol/pistol to combat warriors and rangers using ranged weapons due to the utility skill smoke screen that stopped all the projectiles for 7 seconds letting you easily out dps them (and giving you usually enough time to get steal back so you can engage at close range). This usually forced them into CQC. This is probably one of the weakest areas of warriors and rangers (and thieves); they rely on projectiles for their ranged attacks (mostly).

Just saying that on arenanet's site it says this
What is your refund policy? If you pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 from buy.guildwars2.com and would like a refund prior to the game's release, please contact Customer Support. Source
So I guess you could pre-purchase for the beta weekend and then get a refund if you don't like it and if you end up really liking it you could get the 3 day early start thing
