some skills that don't involve aim/movement in dueling
keeping good track of your opponents stack/health(very important. rapha seems to be the best at it). using proper positioning knowing when to attack/back off keeping good track of armors/timing armors/health/weapons knowing what gun to use for the situation and keeping perfect weapon switch time working/knowing the spawn system - ql spawning isn't random and there are tricks to make it work to your advantage. guarding weapons isn't as important in ql as it was in q3, which is a shame, but it's still done
make one screw up and it might cost you a frag that's the reason why people play so slow at the top level. they're constantly trying to find the perfect time/spot to make an attack. people who try to run and gun in duel aren't going to last long.
btw, all this applies to any quake game and most duel games. so if you get good at ql duel, you'll have a easier transition to whatever the next duel game is.
tldr - analyze rapha demos if you want to improve

I swear I'll never understand this hipster elitism that QuakeWorld is the best game... ~_~

well the answer is simple ... as someone who hasnt actually played quake in over 10 years
THERE HASNT BEEN AN FPS AS GOOD SINCE. All these fucktards wanting realism but wont join an army. Quake is a strategy game with huge tactical elements. It requires complete map awareness, timing lightning sharp reflexes and has an insanley high skill cap.
Realistic fps games require having the patience to hide behind a building with a snuper rifle waiting to go bang.
Dont get me wrong i am a huge cs, css and cs:go fan ... because it retains some of the qualities but you goto cod and battlefied et al and i just want to cry.
All that was amazing about fps games has been sucked out and replaced with sluggish movement. Sure they require skill i am not debating that but they just dont have the gigantic skillcap that quake has.

I meant the people who claim QuakeWorld is better than Quake2, CPM, Quake Live etc.
I agree with you about recent FPS... but I think anyone who looks at the old days of mid-late 90s and early 00s and says "this is the only good game, everything else is bad" is absolutely full of shit. Personally I played most of them, I played QuakeWorld, Quake 2, CPM, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, UT2K4, Painkiller, Team Fortress Classic, Half-Life 1 back in the day and I loved *all of them*. They're all fantastic games with a lot of depth and skill involved in them, so to claim that only one is by far the best is absolutely absurd. It's ok to have a favorite, personally mine is CPM, but it's ridiculous to say that one old school game is so much better than the rest when they're all so good (and all much better than what's on the market today ^^)
Sorry for the rant but this elitism is really annoying and makes the Quake community look like a bunch of immature wankers even though not everyone shares this belief. :/

Agreed I've never understood it either. I'm a fan of death match FPS's. I loved UT99/2k4, QuakeWorld, Quake 3, CPM, HLDM, and even PK after it was patched up for CPL. I even like Warsow but no one plays it, heck no one plays DM FPS anyways. All these games have their differences (which is a good thing) but they all stick to the genre and the fundamentals of duel/tdm and they run well. There are great options out there for DM FPS, people would rather complain and nitpick.

People do still play DM FPS. There are still active communities for QuakeWorld, Quake 2, CPM, UT99 and TFC as far as I know (probably for other games too) but they're mostly full of hardcore players nowadays. Which would be a terrific thing, if they weren't mostly asshat elitists.

If someone has played 2 days of QW he'd destroy you in QL? You make it sound like those games are somehow superior and playing them will make you better in QL than actually playing QL which is of course bs.

I've got a problem: I want to play Quake Live with a Friend in a LAN setting, but when we join a server together we get lags of doom. I got really bad rural internet, but it's enough to play with a ping of about 50-100 alone. When we join together 'though there are infinite spikes (999) for 3-5 seconds.
Any idea to solve this? Our network is set up like this: 2000kbit DSL -> WLAN router -> repeater -> my PC -> crossover LAN cabel -> friends PC
