Also for that matter any tips on dueling? I know you're supposed to control powerups and what not, but anything more specific? I don't really have problems with the movement of quake being an ex/current tribes player (movement honestly isn't that different, one just happens in spurts while one is continous).

Dueling is all about controlling the items, specifically the armors and megahealth. You need to know the timings of items, or at least have a general sense of when they pop up. Also even if movement isn't an issue for you, you might want to practice roaming around the popular duel maps in your own server (bloodrun, lost world, etc.) because it is important to make some jumps consistently. For example: jumping to red armor on ztn/bloodrun, or bridge to rail back in the day. When you start dueling, finding a duel at your level might be difficult so you could just join an empty server and hope somebody around your skill level joins. I recommend watching some VOD's of pro duels, it really helps you to get a sense of what to do.

On a map like ztndm3 or dm13 or t7, the games are generally slow and its easier to pick up yellows it play it slowly, but on maps like aerowalk, t9, tox, hek, the games are pretty fast paced and spawn killing is very common and easy to do, due to its size and terrain, however, due to the maps being so fast, they tend to be quite wavey and back and forth, so you can still buy control back if they don't get a full stack and full control. if you're new, it just seems impossible to break control, and when you have control you don't seem to be able to do anything with it, but after a while you'll start to do more correct things, and take the small items when you can, and your control will be more efficient. learn the maps, and time. 2 biggest things if this is your problem. a few things +f = +forward, meaning moving forward. generally implies aggression. do not attempt so much when out of control/low stack +b = +back, (surprisingly enough!). A good player when +backing doesnt run, they attempt to do small incriments of damage while retreating, while positioning themselves smartly. leaves them less vulnerable and they dont have to run. Does this help? Well the problem is if I try and play it slowly they just bumrush me with thier superior stack and my lack of any weapons at all and I just die. If I manage to get a rocket I tend to do ok...until I run out of rockets.

If I die even once he spawn kills me, then proceeds to pick up EVERY item on the map and spawn kills me even more. I can't even get a shotgun, what do I even do? become more map aware and better at escaping (escpability is map dependent though). the opponent can't grab everything and chase you down at the same time.
