Does anyone know how elo is calculated? I'm wondering because as I've been maining Taric, I very rarely get more kills than deaths, but get plenty of assists. My solo queuing stats (with Taric) are something like 9 wins - 9 losses, 55-50-125. Is my K/D ratio going to keep me in lower skill games?

What level are you? If your <12-13 and you don't have an insane win/loss ratio, you going to be grouped with the lower leveled players. Just keep playing games and get your levels up.

Because if you play phenomenally with Soraka/Janna you'll still end up with like a 1-5-40 record at low levels, and if the 1:5 k/d counts against you no one would play support/tank heroes...

Makes sense. It still makes it rough to play a support hero in solo queue though, because I can't save the game if the team I'm supporting is bad.

yea, but as a support, as Southlight's saying, even if you play phenomenally, it won't necessarily be reflected in stats.

I've played like garbage and cost my team the game with Pantheon or TF and still put up outrageous stat lines, and I've seen Southlight carry us with something like 0/6/19 Janna... stat lines are very deceiving.

Has anyone ever used Quicksilver sash before? Does it work exactly like cleanse or is 'debuffs' only limited to something like exhaust? Can using its active get you out of a taunt?

If so...

It seems like an good item if you were playing some character and had say Ghost/Ignite and found out the enemy team has Malzahar, Morgana, Warwick, Amumu and Ashe on their team but I've never seen it actually used.

9/21/0 means with his masteries he has 9 points in Offence and 21 in Defence. Usually there is 9 in offence towards the Archaic Knowledge and 21 in defence is spread all over the place.

SotD = Sword of the Divine, an item which adds 100+ magic damage every fourth attack and grants you +40% attack speed. I've only really seen it used on TF.

9/21/0 = your mastery allocations (9 in offense, 21 in defense, 0 in utility)

w,e,e,w,e,r,e,w,e,w,w,w,r,q,q,q,r,q,q = the order you level up your skills

magic pen, dodge, Mp5pL, flat HP = runes you'll use once you're level 20+

cleanse/ghost = summoner spells

no. this is not true, win loss may only matter in terms of whether you gain/lose elo, but the amount by which you gain/lose elo through wins/losses is dependent on various other factors and stats that are processed through their elo algorithm. I know for a fact that elo changes are heavily based on level, but i also would not be surprised if it took other things into account like champion played, k:d:a, and other stats like dmg taken, healed, dealt, and other things like building kills, etc.

If we did, it would encourage players to focus on killing other players, instead of strategically winning the game. For instance, healers would receive undesirable Elo modification. By putting as many measurements and incentives as possible on winning, we avoid side behaviors that aren’t as fun, and which confuse the rating process.

okay, so mybe k:d:a may have nothing to do with it, that quote doesnt necessarily mean that there arent other stats involved, i specifically remember reading an interview with a lead dev that addresses the fact that their elo system does include other stats than w/l

I remember reading an interview where they pondered trying to find some way to figure out if a person contributed more or less to a victory (or defeat) but I've not read anything where they've actually come up with a solution, much less implemented it. Not to mention there's almost always going to be inherent bias in such a solution, such as you're automatically shafting players who do a good job leading, because they're not necessarily going to be outputting "statistics." And of course the sheer amount of complexity in deciding that Player A who placed a ward for Player B to teleport to leading to the hilarious death of Player F means that Player A (who may or may not have been fucking around and costing his team the game by buying 50 billion wards) gets massive amount of credit for a potentially game-changing kill, etc. when in fact that player was screwing the team over etc. etc.

Or some Kat may end up like 20-2-10 in a game where Janna saved her ass 50 times, Janna couldn't stop raging about how "bad the Kat is" but when all's said and done statistically the Kat saved the day. How the heck would you determine via statistics whether the Kat actually kicked ass or if the Janna actually carried the game.

Edit:
Another very simple example, to strike down the possibility of using "assists."

If I were Soraka and I really wanted to, I could rack up assists like no other. All I have to do is watch my team, and whenever they're about to score a kill, hit R. By "healing" my teammate I am automatically accredited with an assist. That doesn't mean I'm helping my team, though. Not only am I being hugely detrimental (via stealing kill gold), I'm also wasting my ult. And for all we know while some scrub is watching the other side of the map to snipe an assist that scrub might let the guy in front of him die. Good luck quantifying that.
