When you're a dps carry, getting 2-3 Doran items is ok because of the array of stats it provides. I've seen Twitch and Xin go 2-3 Doran's Blades before going for a high end item. HP, AD, and some leech life (which adds up when you have 3). Casters on the other hand, if you're more support like, say a Janna or Twisted Fate, 2 Doran's Rings is good for HP and Mana Regen. If you're very spammy in lane (Eye of the Storm or Wild Card in this case) the mana regen helps a lot. | ||

Too much is probably really game and matchup dependent, I usually don't like getting 3 but some people like 3.. let's you stay in lane forever... If your thinking of getting a third, think of getting a different core item that's a lot cheaper to start off(Like a brutalizer instead of IE) this should help you not far too behind in the item department, and maybe it will help you start winning your lane..(this is just an example) If your a hero that normally just dominates your lane, avoid multiple dorans items..(like vlad)... vlad can just wait until lvl 7 instead of buying that second dorans shield get something like Haunting Guise(or whatever that mpen + health item is, it's amazing) | ||

It's more risky than opening cloth, but it holds you up more in the mid game. After that, I usually get another blade + pot + ward, then it's zerker's greaves and fill up my inventory with chainmail / negatrons / giants belt(if I don't exactly know yet) as needed to build out into late game items later. | ||
