They're simply ways to present roadblocks so the player doesn't leave cities and get to later areas without getting the badge first. If it wasn't for HMs, in RBY, so many people would get to the Pokemon League, and would have to travel back to every city to get badges. HMs were just used as a tool for game design, and they're extremely outdated. They restrict choice, and don't give the player any meaningful interaction with the environment. The way they do it in this game (plot events that require badges, and HMs leading to optional items and shortcuts) is a much better way to lead the player through the game.
That's why B/W has some excuse like "construction" or something so that you can't advance.

Because they don't need to exist anymore, but they still do.
So either let them exist like in previous Generations and make them actually useful moves, or remove the need for them entirely. This Generation didn't remove them, but didn't do much to improve them, and they still weren't necessary at all. So they were just there for show basically.

But in this game you actually have an interesting choice: Carry around HM moves, or forgo them and miss out on items and shortcuts through caves. If Strength/Cut became good moves in battle, then there isn't reason not to use them.
|
As lame it sounds I've actually been semi following a guide so I don't miss out on any items. Going to try to completely finish this game for once (IE all pokemon, tons of good ones, etc.)

Even if Cut becomes 90 Grass Physical, I'd still prefer Leaf Blade, because of the crit ratio.
If Strength becomes 90 Fighting Physical with a chance for +1 Attack, I think people would still use Close Combat or something if it's available. It may make a good coverage move for a few Pokemon like that though.

I have come across the most anything thing ever playing as a bug catcher... not only do all my pokemon die almost instantly to a steel/fire/rock type pokemon... but there is no pokemon pre-1st elite four that can learn fly...
T.T running back to relic castle from half way around the map = annoying

You can get a Volcarona pre-E4 but it starts out as a Larvestra egg and evolves once it hits level 59. But it can learn Fly.
Although you need to Surf to get it on RT 18

edit: just found out, the ONLY type in the game besides fire that cannot learn surf is bug.

btw, have anyone noticed how they added a TONS of bug and fighting in genV?
like every shits has fighting in it plus ton of bug. I guess that is the main reason why the elements of elite 4 changed to psy ghost dark and fght? To counter most of the legendary...
also, i actually just start the game 3 days ago, did i miss any important online event?

There is currently an event to get a level 15 Victini, until April 3 I believe.

It makes me sad that most of the meta game is around speed, I've been getting a lot of Adamant/Modest type pokemon which should be timid/ jolly. I got an Adamant Cobalion, with a 15 22 13 27 31 17 spred, which isn't all that bad but could be better >.>
Even excadrill, who outspeeds everyone is preferred as Speed+ just in case you meet other excadrills so you can be faster than them... lol

Tyranitar has one of the dumbest move sets because he can learn surf and ice beam =.=

not like its useable, his special attack isn't that good

hms have always been retarded because of the 4 move limit. only way hms would be cool for me would be if they made them less frustrating by letting them bypass the 4 move limit as out of battle moves only. its annoying to have to keep 1 or 2 hmslaves in ur party

Its all comparable...its just that his regular attack is so much better. His SpA is half decent...
though i wouldnt use surf or ice beam (you have ice punch anyways...would be trippy to have a Sp ttar)

Modest TTar with 252 Sp. Atk EVs has 317 Sp. Atk. That's passable in OU, if you have the speed to back it up. With 252 Speed EVs and Choice Scarf, you'd have about 332 speed.

Er... Tyraniboah anyone?
Although that's outdated now a mixed ttar has been common before

there are 8 different Bug types in This gen (well... like 17 or 18 total including pre-evolves).
The other options are like (not including legendaries):
- grass 9 different ones (has a starter and a few relatively early grass types available) - water 8 different ones (has a starter, but then needs to wait till the 8th gym to get surf... ya...) - fighting 6 different ones (has a starter, and 4 early fighting types available) - Steel 6 different ones (1 available after 2nd gym (i think), then others available after 4th gym) - dark 6 different ones (3 VERY early darks available, the others can be found at like E4... ya...) - normal 8 different ones (available at start of game) - flying 8 different types (2 early available ones, some available later)
This means the only really possible "mono-type" runs are:
- Bug type (available after 3rd gym) - Grass (starter + a few early grass types) - Steel (Excadrill would be your only poke till like 4th gym though...) - normal (ya like always) - flying (surprisingly plausable)
Kinda really sucks that you get surf / the fishing rod so late.
Ground / Rock types are few and far between
then most others well... you will be playing with like 1 - 3 pokes till E4 then you get to actually play with a full team, kinda sucks.
