Definitely this. I played a little more, and Ethiopia wouldn't declare peace under any circumstance, even though he attacked me first. I took his capital (we spawned close so it wasn't much effort) but now everyone else is saying they hope my war is going badly and 'Ah, the bloodthirsty one shows his face.'
Dude pls, I didn't even start this war.
Plus once everyone is hostile/guarded towards you, it seems impossible to get them out of it. Even when I trade them luxury resources for free, I can't get on good terms with anyone. I'd understand if it was near the end of the game and they're just competing for the win, but it's only the renaissance era.
No.
As far as I know, you don't get penalty if an AI dow's YOU. You only get penalized if you ELIMINATE a player completely.
The AI is not smart, but it's certainly not random. The AI does not want to surrender because:
1. He thinks he has a larger army than yours; 2. One of his friends, who is also at war with you, have a better army than yours.
Furthermore, not all AIs are made equal. You can dow every single one of your neighbours and Napoleon/Genghis won't care. You try to dow someone once and you may be kissing your friendship to Haile Selassie/Gandhi goodbye.
I started playing civ 4 for the first time now, because my laptop will likely burn up with civ 5.
Turns out it was really good. So far I think I like it more than 5, but maybe that is because I played 5 too much. So I recommend it for anyone who haven't done it already. These types of games really don't seem to get much better or worse with age, like master of orion 1 and 2 still works.
Is France the only "old" Civ that has been revamped or are there changes to other Civs as well? If so, would you mind sharing or hinting at any of these changes?
No civ has been as dramatically revamped as France. But you’ll see (subtler) changes to India and Arabia to name a few. Also we are finding that some civs (Polynesia, Rome, Carthage) have been indirectly strengthened by the new systems in Brave New World.
Interesting to see how India changes. Arab, I am guessing since the trade route is there the bazaar affects it instead of the old trade system? Anyway, kind of surprised that they radically changed France but left some civs that imo needed to be changed a bit. America/Germany/Japan for example.
and
Could you elaborate on Indonesia's ability?
The first three times Indonesia founds a city on a brand new continent(where it hasn’t yet founded a city) it gets two copies of a special resource: Nutmeg, Cloves, or Pepper. This resource cannot be razed or destroyed. Indonesia has the option to trade any of these resources it wishes.
So Indoensia is useless on pangea. but it can randomly spawn special resources 12 times on any island map.
I'm not surprised that they're making changes to Arabia. With the new trade route system, the obvious change to make is to change the current UA (trade routes between cities generate +1 gold) to some kind of gold bonus for trade routes (either +x or +y%).
Also, looks like they're finally fed up with people bitching about India.

Do islands count as continents ? Don't know if the game makes a distinction.

Probably not, otherwise this Civ would be way overpowered early game on Archipelago maps. It seems really stupid to make a Civ guaranteed useless on Pangaea though.

Nope. On those maps you can spam conquistadors and expand all over the map.
speaking of spain, what a totally coin flip civilization. you either find no wonders and are just a civ with a kind of strong but expensive reneisance army OR you find el dorado on turn 20, get 1000 and are up with NC by turn 65 or something like that..

You still wouldn't get your UA bonus, which kinda kills the motivation to play that Civ.

It's not so much about finding them, but finding them FIRST that annoys me.

Even if you find them second you get a random 100-500 bonus, plus if you settle something like Uluru and then pick Natures Wonder as your pantheon you get your religion out at turn 50...but if you find nothing

No that's not the issue.
Randomness is fine in a game; it makes the game more fun. But when randomness is involved, the player should at least have the ability to control the CHANCE of the random event occurring.
In the case of Spain, it is fine that finding wonders is random - as Spain, you can always make more (and earlier) Scouts to explore the land to find them - and doing so improves your chance of getting the bonus. However, as the player you have very little control in making sure you find them BEFORE an AI does. That's the part that is a deal breaker for me.
If I were the designer of the game I'd make it that Spain finds 300gold for each natural wonder regardless of who found it first.
