So i've been tooling around with Austria, pretending I am vencie by doing OCC and using Great Merchants to buy cities (50 friendpoints + 500 gold is about right) and its not that bad even without trade route bonuses since everytime you buy a city state you get their little army. The main issue is the massive happiness hit you get when you puppet a 15-17 sized city. On one city its tough to get a religion and on immortal its almost impossible to hit the really good happiness wonders.

We don't know the ratio for these things. If the ratio is the same as Holy Warrior, then a Research Lab for 250 Faith is probably a little too strong. However, considering Research Labs are Modern Era buildings and the cost of Missionaries at that era, I *really* doubt it is that low. Most likely it's gonna be at least the same as a Missionary, so around 600-1000 Faith.

So what happens if/when Venice captures an enemy capital or any other cities? Are they razed seeing how only city states can become puppets?

IIRC, all cities you capture become puppets. You simply cannot Annex them (and thus probably cannot raze either? Not sure).

So if you capture a Capital it will simply become a puppet like every other city you capture.

Yep, every city that you capture is a puppet until you annex it.

i think he means, as Venice when you capture a city there isnt an "annex" option. You just have raze and puppet.

Only bad thing about new expansion is less than a month before release is than G&K is now boring to me.

Especially when for some reason I try to go culture and end up by turn 200 to spam next turn -.-

Pick Austria, select OCC, pretend you are Venice by only puppeting CS's.
Either go liberty for your first merchant or beeline to markets.

Wish the AI was a little stronger without needing to cheat. I've got a game going where I've been friends with Ethiopia for pretty much all the way through, then suddenly he declares war and says something about his friendship was just a lie.

I beat his invading units and march on his capital with just a few catapults and pikemen. Then he offers me 3 small cities and all his gold for peace. Felt a bit underwhelming.

That and the AI always considers you a warmonger if you capture enemy cities or DoW to defend CS you declared protection over, I mean come on.

I always play very peaceful. Almost never declare war and still since the 16hundreds every civ is guarded and pissed at me. Most of the time I'm not even the leading faction or did anything to piss them off.
I'm shy and reserved, even on the internet.

Anyone have any tips on how to beat the AI on deity. Seems like any strategy I try the AI is always way ahead, on, well everything. Very challenging.

pick the most OP race, beeline for composites and crossbow, settle a city in a way that will provoke the nearest ai and doom his swarm of troops, sack him, move on to crossbows. try to make sure your original army doesnt die so you can get +1 range crossbows and then machine guns. rush to arty because the ai doesnt, then rush to anti air because the ai spams bombers.

Totally agree. I think the ai could be stronger if they spent more time fixing the battle ai. Sure in an ideal world the ai would form coalitions to take down the top civilization but that is some fantasy neural networks and quantum computers civilization 10 stuff, but even in Panzer general the computer could maintain a front, not walk in blindly into crossfires or just walk back and forth between your cities as you shoot them all up. All of that is eminently fixable but the game has been out for what, 2 years? and the battle ai is still pretty stinky. Unless you are on an open plain the ai will take something like 5-10 to one casualties against a human which is why they need to cheat so much for it in the first place, the programmers actually want the ai to have 5-10 times as many units/technology lead so it can be on par with the human.

Try playing on the civfanatics' Deity Challenges. Don't play the messed up ones (like 1v7 or Cultural Victory only maps).... only play the ones that are standard Pangaea. You can take a look at what other players did and compare their strategies/progress against yours.

Definitely this. I played a little more, and Ethiopia wouldn't declare peace under any circumstance, even though he attacked me first. I took his capital (we spawned close so it wasn't much effort) but now everyone else is saying they hope my war is going badly and 'Ah, the bloodthirsty one shows his face.'

Dude pls, I didn't even start this war.

Plus once everyone is hostile/guarded towards you, it seems impossible to get them out of it. Even when I trade them luxury resources for free, I can't get on good terms with anyone. I'd understand if it was near the end of the game and they're just competing for the win, but it's only the renaissance era.

So I've been playing a decent amount of those infinite city growth-rush to crossbows style of games and I've started to think that by keeping pace in city and army size with the ai you can short circuit their agro because the ai seems to have a simple "do we have more cities than him? do we have more army than him?" logic check when declaring aggressive wars. and then the only trick is getting enough money to buy science quickly enough to catch up.
