EA just released Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun and its expansion Firestorm as a free download. You can get it here:
http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic

It's always fun do play some nice imbalanced C&C when you get enough of chesslike Starcraft :D

I'm currently trying to install the original C&C on Win7 64bit but with no success
There is an unofficial patch which adds Win 7 compatability for the game besides other features like high res ( http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/ ), but I found no win 7 installer yet.

€: Finally managed to install the game using the virtual xp mode (not a very elegant solution ^^)

€#2: Make shure to enable windows 95 compatability mode (the game crashes without)

In Win 7 C&C1 and Red Alert also suffer the same 8bit issue (odd colors) as Starcraft. Can be solved a similar batch file to kill the explorer while playing.

For Red Alert, there's a fanmade setup manager: http://ra.nv17.com:8000/utilities/red-alert_manager_0.98.exe

I always have UAC disabled.

Otherwise I just extracted it to Program Files (x86) and ran the game, no problems.

I am on an administrator account.

I always loved the single player campaign in this. I'm going to download this for some multiplayer though if someone wants to play!

I won't really know what I'm doing.. I remember I always loved building a sexy base with walls and gates and defense. What is it like online.. just mass Titans for GDI and maybe Juggernauts mixed in, and mass Tick Tanks for NOD with some Artillery?

man, just played through C&C:TS campaign a month ago

GDI is too imba with their titans that can take a billion damage and their retarded sonic tanks and mmk2 and orca bombers that destroy everything

though I guess it got a bit better in Firestorm for NOD with cyborg reapers

Oooooh, Tiberian Dawn and RA for free. *nostalgia*

The single player campaign for the original C&C blew me away. Honestly, I enjoyed it a lot more than Warcraft 2's single player campaign. The music and the artistic feel, combined with the briefing videos, was amazing.

I never played any C&C games after RA, though, thanks to Starcraft. Maybe I'll DL Tiberian Sun and see what it's like.

I think you'd like Tiberian Sun's videos even better! I forget who all they had, I do remember James Earl Jones was in them though.. the videos were so amazing.

I always loved the single player campaign, it was what the Command & Conquer games always excelled at.

It's not really all that slow. in multiplayer with disruptor drops and engie subs and shit you really need a lot of multitask to defend your base and attack.

I played this game for 2 years before RA3 and then sc and it's really hard on a good level.

Is it possible to play against others? I remember playing this game an eternity ago. I remember not liking it, but I intensely hated C&C for not being as good as SC back then so maybe I was just biased for no reason.

plenty! but I haven't really found one with any lasting power - most of them are fun for a while, but they're best played with multiplayer and a lot of people

I like TS: Total War the best because it feels done in the right stylistic spirit of the game itself

In Tiberium Dawn (C&C 1), you can hit "G" to set your units into "Guard mode" in which they shoot on everything in sight until you move them again.
With careful advancement and constant use of this command, it's almost like using attack move.

I don't know if this also works in Tiberian Sun.

My DL is 1.2mbs so..

I didn't like Tiberian Sun at all to be honest but I'm downloading Red Alert and I'll give it a fair chance, since the general consensus seems to be that it's way better anyways.

RA was amazing when I first played it. Of course, I was a little Westwood fanboy for the longest time, refusing to acknowledge Blizzard RTS games for who knows how long...

Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge comes first! We still play that game for hours on every LAN-party because it's just so much fun :D

Dude, Renegade was hella fun. I miss that game - wish I could find my old CD.

I am having trouble extracting the files for tiberian sun into my /program files/ folder -> I get errors saying that I am unable to create the files and folders there because it is restricted to administrator privileges. How do I extract with admin privileges/get around this problem?

Hmm, I tried download it for 64 bit Windows 7... I'll give it another go. I tried Red Alert right enough. Has anyone else successfully installed RA on a 64 bit system?

Gahhh I never finished renegade.... T_T;

I loved C&C1 sooooo much and being able to run around in it FPS style was SO AWESOME OMG.

When TS came out I felt like it had shat on one of my favorite games by totally altering the feel and world, but I might have to give it a second try. We'll see.

Oh, Red Alert won't install by itself. There is an installer that someone made that at least works for 64-bit Vista, but it only gets you the original game, no expansions.

Google got me that last time I installed my copy of RA on this computer. I'm too lazy to look for it now though.

Not sure there's any way to install the expansions on a 64 bit OS.

The game runs ok once you get it installed though.

Not sure how the Westwood-distributed copy works though, I was installing off of my actual CD.

Getting errors running Tiberium sun saying one or more DLL files are missing or damaged, any idea what I can do. I have tried reinstalling.
edit: I ran the game with administrator privileges and the game launches, it just says please insert the cd-rom. Anyone else getting these problems?
edit again: Got a CD crack, had to pull game.exe out of /program files/ so i could use the crack on it, put it back, and the game finally works.

Tiberium Sun is so bad. It's so easy to lose hitpoints (for example, almost every kind of units have splash that hurts friendly units; almost every unit breaks into a million pieces when dying and hurts EVERYTHING in sight.... even the MINERALS drain your hitpoints!!!)

Because it's so easy to lose hitpoints, this game is sooo slow.

Played TS like what? 10 years ago? Only thing I recall was the the ridicalous NOD artillery that hits moving things like a homing missile, and a couple neat single player missions where the objective is quite novel and interesting (recall a mission to snipe a train, I accidentally destroyed a section of track by splash, guess what? train stopped lol!)

It was for a time the daikatana of RTS, hugely anticipated but delay after delay. By the time it was released, technologically it was no longer impressive.

Don't hate me, but I prob liked RedAlert2 single player campaign better than SCrafts to be honest.. Tanya > Kerrigan. The overdone acting was hilarious. I had a good time with the game and glad I played it.

Oh I won't even deny that. I absolutely LOVED all of the Command & Conquer campaigns.. especially Tiberian Sun (James Earl Jones was in it!) and Red Alert 2. I STILL remember the intro scene for Red Alert 2.. "Is it done Yuri? No, it has only begun."

Plus some of the missions were just plain awesome, like the one where you use Tanya in St. Louis and have to sneak around the city to blow up the psychic thing, or the last Soviet mission where you have to keep defending against Kirovs. Kirovs, those things were freaking amazing. I still remember I would play the game with my brother's friend, our neighbor I guess, and we would play against brutal computers and always lose to those Kirovs.

OMG lol, I remember the first time I beat that level.. the robot thing was coming to my base and one of my rocket guys shot it while it was on a bridge. Apparently the rocket was enough to destroy the bridge so the robot thing fell through it, winning me the mission.

The problem with Tiberian Sun is that my mouse has way too much DPI to handle unit selection and move commands on the same button. I'm sure we'll get a small resurgence once the OpenRA project gets it's TS mod running.

It has been a while since I played an old c&c title. I seem to remember being able to perform something like an attack move, but can't seem to remember how. Anyone got the key(s) for performing a basic attack move, or was I just dreaming about doing this in older c&c titles?

It is the G key? But doesn't that make the units stop? Have to try that out when I am at home.

It's the guard button, and it indeed does make units stop. The only other way to do it is to make an offensive patrol which is really fiddly as you might imagine.

Had some fun replaying the campaign. My biggest complaint would have to be the friendly fire from explosions, especially when using Disk Throwers. God damn those chain explosions. I won't miss that!
