So if people remember this thread from last year, it appears PC Gamer is doing the same thing again: online votes for the top 100 games of all time. Don't remember how Starcraft did last year, but I'd say we need to put on a show that TL still owns the internet.
It's pretty much the same deal as last time. The URL is the same (http://www.pcgamertop100.com). Registration is the same, with no confirmation required or whatever, and voting is basically the same.
As a side note, I've got to say that the Editorial Top 100 is a pretty dumb list, even by games journalist standards. Never mind top game, Starcraft isn't even the top RTS. 23rd place? Behind Rome: Total War? Genre bias is also pretty obvious when the top 20 has 8 shooters and 8 RPGs (I dunno who came up with these genres, but Counter-Strike Source is very clearly a shooter and NOT an adventure game lol).
My top 10: 1. Starcraft 2. Baldur's Gate II 3. Half-Life (including Counter-Strike) 4. Alpha Centauri 5. Planescape: Torment 6. Civilization II 7. Fallout I/II 8. Deus Ex 9. X-Com UFO Defense 10. Warcraft II

LOL @ CS:S being an adventure game.
|
as long as WoW isn't #1 i won't care
|
I like your top 10, great great games, not the kind you throw away after having completed them after8 hours.
|
My votes were:
1. Starcraft 2. Civilization 2 3. Transport Tycoon 4. Grim Fandango 5. The Longest Journey
Note: I don't do shooters. Actually I don't play very much at all, so if you disagree, that might be why.
|
I don't know if it was last year, but I know Starcraft has done well on this list in the past. It was in the top 10 (along with diablo 1). I don't remember what year this was though.

Impressed they put X-Com (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) at #11 ;o
My list wasn't super thought through but:
SC UFO: Enemy Uknown Star Control 2 Deus Ex Warcraft 2
I kinda wish I could have voted for some point-n-click adventure game as well, but forgot about it ; [ Like Beneath a Steel Sky or Secret of Monkey Island, or Grim Fandango.
I think more objectively, games like Quake 3 and WC3 should probably be up there somewhere but meh.

starcraft system shock 2 doom I II III baldur's gate I II Monkey Island I II III Another world Warcraft 2 Diablo I II Quake I

Wow, really hard to narrow it down to 5. Would have been much easier to make a top ten.
My votes:
1. Diablo 2 2. Starcraft 3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 4. Half Life 2 5. Mass Effect
CBNC:
6. Half Life 7. Homeworld 8. Civilization IV 9. Portal 10. Mirror's Edge
Note: I voted SC as #1 and D2 as #2 since the whole point of this was to prove that TL owns the internet o.0, but I gotta admit that I loved D2 just slightly more.
Edit: Wait a minute, Baldur's Gate 2 was on that list? FUCK, missed it. Should've been placed either at #5 or #6 for me.

urgh PC Gamer, I wrote to the UK version in Dec 98 to complain about their review of Broodwar, they published my letter but I never bought the magazine again!
|
Me:
1. Starcraft 2. Counter Strike 3. Call of Duty 2 4. Counter Strike Source 5. Warcraft III
I voted for the games I enjoyed the most, maybe not the best. Single player games are fun but nothing beats multiplayer imo.
|
|
1. Starcraft 2. Frontier (Elite 2) 3. Colonization 4. Monkey Island 2 5. Baldur's Gate
There are some newer games that are better, I'm sure, but I enjoyed these a lot when they were new.
|
In no particular order: Starcraft Diablo 1,2 Baldur's Gate 1,2 Civ 3,4 Deus Ex Fallout 1,2
|
sc d2 d1 wow cs:s w3
voted four different times, ranked in order of how much each one got used

Here are my 5 biggest time syncs in gaming over past 20 years.
Starcraft World of Warcraft (omg flames) Call of Duty 4 X-Com: UFO Defense Final Fantasy 3

Top Games For Me (current games I am playing)
1. StarCraft 2. Gears of War 3. Resident Evil 5 4. Avatar (the game) 5. dunno

1. Serious Sam 2. Fate 3. Halo 4. Oblivion 5. CnC 3
Beat that.

medal of honor: allied assault battlefield 2 age of myrthology UT2004 CoD 1
|
1. Starcraft 2. Star Control II 3. Mechwarrior 4. Half-life 5. Age of Empires II
These really should be broken up by franchise having games like Half-life and half-life 2 competing against each other is pretty ridiculous.
|

1. dragon age 2. half life 2 3. civilization 4 4. fallout 3 5. mass effect 6. overlord 7. gta 4 8. titan quest 9. transport tycoon 10. cnc generals
|
My top 5: 1. Starcraft. 2. Age of Empires III 3. Team Fortress 2 4. Half-Life 5. Warcraft III
|
Last year sc got 23 i think
|
Why so many people go with Civ II when clearly Civ III and IV are far superior? (not to mention SMAC)
And no one votes for Masters of Orion?
|
I'm not impressed by the selection of games you can vote for. They are mixing new and old and low budget simple games with expensive production games. This purpose of this vote seems to just be to get people to register to their site and so that they will have something to write about.

For those who don't to spend time registering just use Mailinator.com
1: Starcraft 2: Counter Strike Source 3: Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion 4: Age of Empires 2 5: C&C Red Alert 2 (Couldn't decide, probably should have put C&C Generals but couldn't find it)
Edit: SHIT, forgot Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. But I played that on Xbox so it shouldn't count.

1. Planescape Torment 2. Star Control 2 3. Fallout 1&2 4. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 5. Medieval Total War

No one mentionned RollerCoaster Tycoon yet?
1- SC 2- Diablo 1 (objectively, D2 is a better game, but D1 brings back better memories. The atmosphere in D1 was incredible, you didnt need any knowledge of the lore or backstory to understand the amount of shit the village was being put through, all the characters were memorable too.) 3- X-Com UFO Defense 4- Rollercoaster Tycoon 5- Simcity 2000 6- Heroes of Might and Magic 2 7- Warcraft 2 8- Secret of Monkey Island 9- Quake 3 10- WoW
Honorable mentions : Dune 2, Red Alert, Braid, Bioshock, I have no mouth and I must scream.

lol? PC Gamer "journalists" played SC2 at normal setting and diddled around with 6 workers, a zealot, and a dragoon 8 minutes into the game upon whence two colossi and a group of zeals just came in and killed everything.
Shit cannot be taken seriously at all.

Its hard for me to ever drop the old Sierra games off my top fav. PC games of all time. King's Quest/Space Quest/LSL were great back when I gamed on my massive 5MHz PC. I was never as big of a Police Quest fan though, it was not as fantasy-like or exaggerated fun as the others.
|
1. Final fantasy VII 2. Lord Of The Realms II 3. Morrowind 4. Supreme Commander 5. Age Of Empires II 6. Starcraft 7. Empire Earth 8. Warcraft III 9. Civilisations II 10. Diablo I

Any top 10 PC game of all time list without Starcraft and Baldur's Gate 2 is an automatic failure for any PC game journalist, I cannot believe that the PC Gamer editors are so fucking bad now. I used to read their magazine eagerly too, especially after the time when Warcraft 2 came out. Back then they actually knew their shit.
|
rome total war is fucking legit idk what you're talking about.
still should have SC numbahone though.

lol what, solitaire at 82. That game is shit.
|
Hm. I registered and voted:
1. StarCraft 2. FF VII 3. Q3 Arena 4. Civilization 2 5. Diablo
Don't think it's a good list but I didn't want to waste too much time on thinking of which games should really be top 5. It'd take me at least a full day to come to a good top 5.. anyway I find all of these games pretty good ^^ Also, D1 > D2 imo. While gameplay wise D2 > D1, I think D1 was way ahead of its time and there was nothing that came anywhere close to it. D2 was a logical follow up, which made the game way more playable but for me it lost some of its atmosphere compared to its prequel.
I guess I could've put Q1 instead of Q3 but I played Q3 a lot more. Could possibly have put Civ1 over Civ2 as well but I guess these are all things I'd have to think a good couple hours over on what I'd value more in a top 100 all time ranking xD

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Unreal Tournament Warcraft 2 Aliens vs Predator (not the most popular, but i owned it up in multiplayer) Team Fortress 2
HoMM3 was like the biggest time sink ever. Hours flew by instantly, especially playing Hotseat with a brother who liked to reload everytime a battle didnt go his way.
Unreal Tournament along with AvP were what got me into FPS's. I spent many a night instagibbing people and thwacking people with my Alien.
Warcraft 2 just owned. I still remember setting up 'fields of death' with ballistas lined up in a row doing attack ground, ogre mines, whirlwinds, etc and had people run across back and forth with the one surviving 'winner' at the end.
Team Fortress 2- Just plain fun. Lots of classes, lots of updates. I look at the hours played for each character and wince.

1. Nox 2. Starcraft 3. Planescape: Torment 4. Wurm Online 5. Dungeon Keeper

Nox was anything but a Diablo clone. It was "promoted" as one because it came out one month before Diablo II when the hype was at its peak. 90% of the focus in the game laid on multiplayer and it was a hundred times more quick-paced than Diablo would ever get, without any PvE element added in. It had more similarities with Quake than Diablo.
Speaking of Diablo... On January 23 2010 10:56 lepape wrote: 2- Diablo 1 (objectively, D2 is a better game, but D1 brings back better memories. You don't have to be ashamed of putting D1 over D2, I think it's pretty widely agreed that the predecessor is superior.

The Total War series is awesome. Im a huge fan of the series but I do prefer FPS games more, specifically COD. Call of Duty 1 and 2 are great, the United Offensive expansion has the best infantry combat by far. They really ruined the series by keep going modern, not that I didnt enjoy the first Modern Warfare. Not going to create a list, its just too difficult to place them in order.

Fallout 1&2 is way better than Fallout 3.

The same can be said of people who like the oldies over the new ones. A lot of things (not just games) seem more awesome as we remember it than they actually.
1. Half-Life, would put Quake here if id didn't decide it was awesome to take shit on people finishing the games. 2. X-Com: TTftD, the curve of this game was a predecessor to EVE online's curve. 3. SimCity, fuck you traffic adviser I have enough roads. 4. Starcraft 5. HoMM3

Why did some people like WC II better than III?
|
On January 29 2010 05:37 il0seonpurpose wrote: Why did some people like WC II better than III?
Probably beacuse it`s gameplay was a lot more similar to StarCraft then that of WarCraft III. Since the reliance on heroes and small armies was a new style when WarCraft III came out, it is not suprising that some were and still are turned off by it. Plus, there is a lot of nostalgia connected with WarCraft II.

On January 29 2010 05:37 il0seonpurpose wrote: Why did some people like WC II better than III?
Heroes suck. I still own and play War3 frequently, but entirely for UMS games. I played the hell out of Warcraft II when I was young simply for the RTS that it was.

Starcraft is my favorite. But only due to the fact that you can play it that much and it doesn't gets boring - and there is always something new / to make better. Monkey Island tops even starcraft when you only play it once, and that by far, but eventually gets boring after 10 times or so. You can only play it every 3 years or so. For the music, Monkey Island Theme is my ringtone since years and it never gets boring.

I can't decide which 5 of these to pick:
StarCraft FlatOut 2 X-Wing vs TIE Fighter Transport Tycoon Empire Earth Monkey Island I-III Company of Heroes Knights of the Old Republic Anno 1602 Aliens vs Predator 2 Diablo 2 Quake 3
