Janna and Pantheon is a very very mean lane combo. You literally control the entire lane at level 3 vs. almost all teams because Pantheon can burst from full health -> death most champions with Janna's shield on him.

Master Yi is actually 100% viable now. Not many people run exhaust in top level games and he hits 4x with Bloodrazors on Golem/Lizard (not sure about Baron/Dragon). It's a glitch, but it works, and jungle Yi is pretty solid as he can solo most champs + he's ridiculous if he comes in after you've wasted your CC. I've been watching some livestreams with good Yi players, he's back into the "playable" tier.

...really? he's still looked like ass for the same old reasons when people play him in my games. I mean, sure, he definitely got buffed, but it doesn't seem like any of them are really relevant buffs to him in teamfights which is where he always has become fucking useless. Besides, all his damage is sustained output, there's no real burst to talk about and with his lack of CC, his ganking ability, while OK, doesn't seem nearly good enough to justify his uselessness in teamfights... uhg, he still just seems like the same fucking mess of a character, just with slightly jacked stats now. He'll look good and put up insane stats if you can win the damn 4v5 anyway, but then he's just a win more character, which is pretty useless since you could probably just have battle soraka sitting in the bush with Last Whisper and BF Sword waiting for them to blow their CC load instead of Yi and still win.

Nothing really changed for Yi. The metagame is shifting and making him automatically more viable, that's all.

Edit:
In that, there's a lot less big AoE now. Whereas before games were filled with Alistars and Fiddles and TFs and Sivirs and what-have-yous spamming CC and flying damage, lots of games these days are covered by Shen, Nidalee/Ezreal, a dedicated support, and two random things that often don't have AoE or good CC.

I'll agree with that to an extent, but I still think Yi is bottom 3 in the game rofl. he's probably better than trynd and eve now though lol.

He's poking his head into tier 4 atm for me; I saw two Yis absolutely crush a game; granted, one of them fell off after mid-game, but it did tell me that Yi can activate earlier now with a stronger, less mana-consuming Alpha Strike. I feel like it's tough balancing Yi, though, because he was and still is the strongest late-game hero in the game, but he just never farms fast enough. Speeding up Alpha, which is the big change I notice, makes him farm very fast, but that also means a fast farm Yi = crazy snowballing = breaks a game really fast. I think he's still like a probability-based hero, in that if the other team is set up well he'll have a bad game, while if the other team has chobo hero choices he'll absolutely crush them now.

Oh, also the Highlander buff. What were they thinking? Two assists or a kill to have it charged? In late-game teamfights that's ridiculous. You may not always get a kill by with Alpha and his movement speed he'll easily get at least two assists.

The bright side is he's still relatively easy to kill, but they've given him a free Zhonya's Ring via Meditate now.

As a whole he's not terrible anymore, and those changes coupled with his improved farming speed make him rather viable. As said, poking his head into Tier 4 already, for me, and possibly on the rise. If you ask me who you'd rather have, a jungling Warwick, Udyr, or Yi, I'd be hardpressed to tell you I'd prefer Udyr over Yi atm :| (granted that has a lot to do with Udyr being nerfed to the ground, too).

wait... what? are you trolling? I agree that late-game is his strongest phase, but uhhhh... seems to me that there are plenty of characters that would rapestroy him late game off of similar farm. what makes you think he'd be stronger than like, Jax or Shen or Nasus or Trist or TF or Ezreal or Trynd or Twitch?

EDIT: every time I see him trying to Z-Ring with meditate, he just gets taunted, feared, silenced, stunned, or knocked up and then raped.

Not trolling. His base stats were good enough that his damage output vs survivability (via life steal) rivaled if not easily trumped that of Trist/Nasus/Jax/Shen/Trynd/Ez/Twitch. Jax and Trynd are the only real "hard counters" to Yi, so to speak, and even Jax can be trumped by getting SotD (as Yi's DS + Crit = mad damage output). Highlander was and is really really good.

The problem was, and sort of is, that he has no utility. He has pretty much no lane presence, Alpha Strike was too slow and costly for consistent farming, and with no utility and a massive farm requirement he was like a melee version of Tristana. Except Trist has two escape mechanisms and farms really fast because of Explosive... and even then I don't mind seeing Trist on the enemy team, because I don't usually lose to a farmed Trist.

So they buffed his farming speed, and made it so in mid-late-game teamfights he can keep up Highlander much more easily. Coupled with the metagame shift (the biggest thing) he's less likely to be CC'd and nuked. And if he's being nuked, he has Meditate, which can keep him up okay if he times it, especially in conjunction with Cleanse against a nuker (who will usually open with a stun, so if you see it coming, like Annie, you get hit by Tibbers, Cleanse, Meditate, eat the next two shots with really high MR, then break Meditate, turn on Highlander and kill... assuming the Shield doesn't kill you.) etc.

Obviously using Meditate mid-fight against a spam CC character won't help, but really in such a case he's dead anyways so that makes no difference.

Edit:
To explain further, the comparison with Nasus, for example (probably the most significant one here), is that Nasus only needs like 1300 gold to output damage (Sheen). Beyond that he can build tank, and thus he becomes a really heavy-striking DPS Tank hybrid.

By comparison Yi would need like 3-4 DPS items, including a heavy lifesteal item (like Exec Calling).

But in a full farm vs full farm duel, Yi would crush Nasus in like 6 seconds. And he'd pretty much end the fight with nearly-full HP and a freshly charged Highlander.

That said, Yi was and is less likely to survive a teamfight with heavy AoE being flung around (why he was absolutely useless) and it's not exactly cake to get those 3-4 DPS items either.

I've lost one game to a Yi, but that was also 4v5 loss and the Yi was a victory cigar.

But I also won a game earlier with Kyzer where our Yi scored us like 10 kills between the 15-30 minute mark. This, of course, comes with the caveat that he was laned with me (on Shen) against a solo Janna, and the Janna couldn't do anything to actually like, stop our Yi, from farming. And I was content to let our Yi get all the creep kills, and no one bothered to gank him.

Gawd, just had one of the stupidiest games ever. I start out picking Rammus, while my teammates goes for Shaco, Akali, Janna and Ashe. The triggy thing is, that Shaco left before the game begun, so it was 4v5. Me and Janna lane together, Ashe and Akali solo. Then in some wicked weird way me and Janna ends up killing Shen and GP enough times to me having 5-0-0 score after 8 minutes (as rammus >_<). Then after the laning phase we figure we don't wanna go into the lategame lacking a player. So we organize and get aced(..........) then after that we got our shit together and never lost control rest of the game.
