At any moment, Nintendo could shut down Project M with a cease & desist letter. Project M requires hacking the console, uses game code and assets from Nintendo property, takes attention away from a game Nintendo wants to promote, and tells casual observers that Nintendo games are so bad that we have to fix their mistakes before we'll play them. Not only that, but it's legally in Nintendo's interest to shut it down, because if you as a copyright holder let something like this go unchecked, it can actually become a problem for you. But they haven't taken action. They've chosen to ignore it. And you have to imagine that this decision was made deliberately. I don't know if the sudden silence regarding Project M was because Nintendo of America nudged GimR and said "Ix-nay on the oject-Pray -- pretend it doesn't exist so that we can pretend not to know about it", or if it simply was because they were worried that exposure might bring the hurt on their stream and Project M along with it, but either way this has always been a concern. If Project M did become big, it would probably force Nintendo's hand, and things would get very depressing for both sides. I don't think this story will have a particularly good ending, but as long as Nintendo isn't forced into taking action against it, we'll hopefully be able to keep it as a wonderful pet project. We just can't put it on the big stage is all.

Actually, before the game came out there were rumors of a "Competitive" mode being shipped with the final product. This, however, did not happen. I wonder if Nintendo would work with the coders who made PM and enable a Competitive mode DLC for Sm4sh, thereby incorporating all the work of the community into their own IP. They wouldn't even have to pay the PM team - having something like that on your resume is a great way to get a job in the industry.

![]() And one more question. I'm getting much better at waveshining, drillshines, and shine bairs, but one of the things that I don't understand is how players like Mango, Leffen, and DRPP do running shines. Like when their approach is to just dash at their opponent and shine them. Whenever I try this I end up just crouching next to them, or my shine comes out super slow. I've tried looking this up, but for some reason I can't find the answer. Do the jump cancel the shine, or something?
