HongUn has long been a favourite of mine. I realise this is going to be a fairly niche club, but he always provides entertaining games. He is truly unpredictable, being completely unafraid to do non-standard plays.
Turns out the Mothership is the counter to flying Factories
Beyond the entertainment value of getting motherships and carriers in the GSL, he has proven himself to be a very solid player. He was ranked Code S from GSL Open Season 1, and kept a code S spot for far longer than many other celebrated players, and reached the semi-finals in July.
His play is unconventional without being gimmicky. Whilst playing it is apparent he is thinking about the game, willing to change or adapt his strategy as necessary, and deviate from a build if he thinks it's best. Whilst learning a build and just sticking to it can certainly be a powerful way to play, I personally find HongUn's unpredictability, adaptability and creativity inspiring and refreshing.
Joker.
HongUn has provided so many comedy moments too. He doesn't seem to take any of it too seriously. A highlight for me is when he always picks out a new nemesis (normally a friend) then declares war on him and his family and everyone they've ever met.
If there is any interest I will start trying to compile some videos/interviews and stuff.
HongUn : I did not show good games against Terran lately. I am happy that I showed better games today. I don't know how to express my feelings in words
Q : Did you prepare for 6 warp gates rush on the first game?
HongUn : I decided to use that build after I saw his command centre. So it was just a counter build.
Q : Your use of Colossi in the second game was outstanding
HongUn : I think theBest put his Vikings too forward so I could take the benefit of that. So I could save my Colossi.
Q : Who would you want to face in the next round?
HongUn : Check is my teammate and we know each other well so I want to face Jinro
Q : What's your goal for this season?
HongUn : Looking back now how I said I want to win the tournament last season even makes me laugh at myself. There are so many people on ladder who are really good and I think I know myself better now. So I am happy that I am in the rounds of 16.
Q : Are you not undervaluing yourself too much?
HongUn : I am sure that not every players would feel like me but after being in the up/down matches I am just glad that I am in the rounds of 16. When you are in Up/Down matches you sensor some sort of alerts. Code S is the tournament with 32 best players . Saying winning the tournament by beating all players sounds bit cocky to me, at least for now.
Q : Any last words?
HongUn : I left Prime house and practising at home recently. My parents support me and look after me I thank them very much. I also thank Clide and Alive. There was a fan who gave me a hand made Stalker with papers, told me that something for me was inside that Stalker. It is really well made paper Stalker so I did not have guts to open it yet. I am keeping it as it is for now. I really thank that particular fan.
Big thanks to CryingPoo for this interview (original thread:http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=195962)
EDIT: All pictures from www.gomtv.net, buy a season ticket etc.
Which line do I write on? HongUn is my favorite korean player. He's entertaining, his play is interesting to watch, and he always just seems so excited to be there.
I've been a HongUn fan longer than I've been a Jinro fan, so by rule of seniority I unfortunately must root for HongUn in the next round Sorry Jinro! I love this guy. He has some problems with unit control I admit, but he is incredibly unpredictable and has about a billion different powerful builds up his sleeve, and executes them quite well. Right when you think all he does is semi-cheesy 1-base strategies, he pulls off a great macro-oriented double Forge build. Furthermore, I've never seen anything like his clutch wall-in defense against FD in GSL3. That was incredibly sick, and really demonstrates some great on the fly thinking under lots of pressure. To top things off, this guy is probably the biggest showboater in all of GSL. He makes Carriers (and wins with them) at a huge risk just because he told his fans that he would try to show them the first GSL Carriers, and then he decides to go Mothership against NaDa with a massive troll grin on his face (and he tried to pull off a Mass Recall just for the hell of it, and though it unfortunately didn't work I think he's awesome for trying).
Easily one of my favorite players. Sign me up for sure.
Beyond the entertainment value of getting motherships and carriers in the GSL (I believe he is still the only protoss to have gotten either of these units?), he is a very solid player.
Actually, whichever Protoss knocked out MaruPrime in GSL1 got a Mothership, but that doesn't really count because he didn't do anything with it (Maru GG'd right after the Mothership came out). So, HongUn is, I think, the only Protoss player to have actually gotten and USED a Mothership in the GSL. MC also got Carriers against Jinro last season but that didn't work out for him. HongUn got Carriers and won So I guess you could say HongUn is the only Protoss to have gotten either of those units and made them look totally badass.
Uh, is this the guy who said "Roach imba" in a winner interview after winning against a zerg? Not to mention that his macro is lowplat level compared to any code A player that is still in the tournament.
Actually, whichever Protoss knocked out MaruPrime in GSL1 got a Mothership, but that doesn't really count because he didn't do anything with it (Maru GG'd right after the Mothership came out).
That was sanZenith ! Maybe he had lategame skills even then? :O

San actually wasn't that bad in GSL1. He was considered "lesser" but if you watch the DQ game against Inca it was pretty good. His ro64 game in GSL2 also wasn't that bad IIRC, just in his ro32 game he choked and from that point on everyone considered him a joke. It was actually pretty unfair, whether or not he was a top player he was not nearly as bad as people made him out to be.
I think I'm a HongUn fan because I feel like he's the underdog in every game he plays, but he wins anyway.
Edit: HongUn is the Fruit Dealer of Protosses. Fitting because they're best bros.
Count me in. I became a big HongUn fan during GSL 3 where he gave us carriers, insane wall ins, and solid double forge builds. Plus he's pretty easy going about it all. Sucks he has to play against Jinro next.
On February 27 2011 07:37 Liquid`Nazgul wrote: how many of you are going to be rooting against jinro? :D
Now that is a tough one. Jinro kind of represents the foreigner scene over there at the moment (some would say a welcome change from our previous representative), as well as the website I love, and seems like a great guy. I really want Jinro to win a GSL, more than HongUn because of what it would mean.
But he's also a terran (I play P&Z, and generally root against the terran), and I love watching HongUn play.
I think I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the games, safe in the knowledge they'll make for great viewing.
Like Fruitdealer he tends to all-in a bit too much for my taste (which leads to a lot of resentment, particularly around here). Hes shown some nice macro games though, I think he was the first Korean that we saw using a double forge build (at least in gsl). His phoenix control in game 3 of the Jinro series today was pretty impressive. Despite some of his showings I don't think hes on the same tier as an MC but hes probably just a tier or so below.
One of the best things about HongUn is that he does some rather cheesy all-in that prompts tons of people to bitch and moan about how he's a terrible, cheesy player, then suddenly he turns around and plays a great harass-based macro game with Phoenixes. It's too bad that he had to knock out Jinro, though :/

So true. The result is kind of he doesn't have a "style" that can be "broken". Like all the things people seem to do against IdrA, like teching and expanding at the same time, because they know he's not going to be aggressive.
I think it makes him a better player that he's willing to do things like the four gate he did against Jinro. In future games people are going to have to make sure their builds can deal with it if it happens, and if he plays a long macro game that could give him a small edge.
I, too, loved his phoenix play in that last game. Shame about Jinro, but I do love HongUn.

My main complaint about Hongun is probably that he does all-ins and stuff while at the same time having pretty bad micro, but then game 3 last night he played a really solid game without any really obvious errors so I don't even know what to think. He didn't even seem to be playing that well in games 1 and 2, his build in game 2 aside.

He does shit because he thinks it's a good idea.
Too many people seem to be idealistic regarding all-ins, or playing a macro game. He thought it would be a good idea to 4gate Jinro game 2, so he did it. Just like in game 3 he thought it would be a good idea to open with phoenixes, so he did that; regardless of whether or not other protoss players open with a stargate or not.
I think you're right about his micro though, I really noticed it in game 2. Especially when he attacked the bunker leaving half his units behind.
On March 04 2011 10:31 Turgid wrote: Yeah I don't have a problem with all-ins per se. I just don't think they suit his strengths(whatever those may be) usually.
Well, he doesn't do all-ins that much. Weird builds, all the time, but not many of them are actually all-in. His micro isn't as good as some of the real masters of it that we've seen in the GSL, but it's good enough to pull off his builds, and that's all you really need.
Hate to say it but those super tournament games against Moon were pretty dull. He just got a load of blink stalkers off two bases and went all-in every game.
I'd like to think he was just super confident against Moon though and he's saving some interesting stuff for us.
Sign me up! This is the only player in SC2 that makes my jaw drop at his on the go improvised tactics, hope he can improve overall and keep this unique qualities.
(regarding Tastosis' harsh critique of Hongun) I think alot of it came from the fact that Artosis was hyping Supernova's TVP ("best in the world!") the entire time, only to watch him lose 2 straight games to one of the weaker protoss' in code S. I'm sure its a bit tough for him to swallow and commentate. Instead, he flips it around by talking about all the negatives of Hongun's play, rather than Supernova's inexplicably bad TVP.
Reading about his wrist problems makes me sad, since I've been following this guy since the very first GSL. He's entertained us with his Carriers and Motherships, and he's just been one of the more fun Protosses to watch. I wish him the best with his health.
I <3 Hongun. Just watched his GSL matches today vs. Zenio and + Show Spoiler +
am saddened by how much Tastosis seems to discredit him more than other players, although I do admit that sometimes his play appears arbitrary. But I feel like that's one of his strengths because most of the time his opponent's wondering "WTF is this guy doing" (see him v. Supernova for a prime example). It's like he's playing the meta-metagame, haha.
Anyway, sign me up. He had me from the moment I saw his GSL portrait with the hat and scarf (and apparently smiling, which I have not seen him do on camera).
Wow HongUn, that totally surprised me. I'd be happier, but the fact that he's having serious wrist problems still puts a dark cloud over all the games he plays It's depressing.

HongUn!!!!!!! I was gonna post in here yesterday saying that I hope HongUn could at least pull out 1 game. His PvP has been awful and he was going up against one of the best PvPers.
No one ever mentions HongUn as a top player but he has the most consistent GSL performances out of anyone, right up there with NaDa.
Funny quote from his interview after the Ro16
I really want to thank my parents. I also want to say sorry to have filled up the interview with my body complaints rather than crying about my race. I will make sure I stop complaining next time.
He said, 'I was very unhappy with how Taeja BMed MarineKing in game 1, MKP is a little brother I really am close to. I was originally going to play respectful but after seeing that, I decided to kick his ass' 'Taeja, if you keep doing that shit in code A, MKP will whoop your ass'
HongUn is the" Meh Protoss": he had to be convinced to not retire and doesn't take Code S group selection seriously, but still makes the semifinals. He is also like a sleeping dragon - not terribly motivated, but if you badmanner his little buddy, prepare to be stomped on. Definitely my favorite Protoss.

Shine on, you crazy bastard.
You were one word short of a great Pink Floyd reference
seriously, why so little love for this guy? he has such good results
it seems like he's always the not favorite, despite how good he is
Anyway, i'm disappointed they picked Trickster over HongUn in Arena of Legends. HongUn is much better, or at least has much better results. Sure, Trickster may be considered to have a small rivalry with Losira considering how close their last match was (in the semis recently, Bo5) even though Trickster kept relying on timing pushes, but I can't see him vs MKP as being anywhere equal, unless he just keeps doing all-ins and timing pushes.
Sigh, they really should have picked HongUn. >.<
Even HongUn over Naniwa would make sense, though I'm sure they want more foreign representation. Over Trickster they could have even picked Genius or Puzzle or even JYP, the only reason why I can see they picked Trickster is because of his beta fame in the foreign community, but the foreign community doesn't even like him that much anymore...
I hope he doesn't quit soon, i really wonder how much closer his match vs nestea would have been (or if he may have even won) if his wrist problem was really that bad
he doesn't seem to be very popular in the korean scene either but i could be wrong
if he doesn't get enough support he may really quit and do whatever else he said was his real main goal in life
seriously there is like no attention for HongUn, there isn't even an interview anywhere regarding his wrist problems? (a recent one, excluding the interview after one of his matches where he first told us of the problem)
How I didn't notice I'm not part of this fanclub yet! Sign me up plz! :D One of my favorite toss no wonder why Polt and MarineKing (and in a certain extent every Prime player) have such good vP . HongUn + MKP at MLG is awesome, maybe he will gain more recognition in the foreign scene with that tournament.
I hope HongUn can fulfill the Legend of the Fall for SC2...need some Protoss powa, show the Terran race the power of Mothership rushes and blink stalkers (proxied structures as well)
MKP lifts to the gold, MakaPrime throws down a lot of orbital command and drops a LOT of mules, BboongBbong eats pizza, Hannibal does mech in TvP and HongUn makes carriers in PvT... and win. This team is so boss and HongUn is a fucking boss toss :D.
Sorry for neglecting the OP for a short while! I have updated it, and added that picture. Does anyone have a picture of the nerd blood bottle, or remember what match that was?
Still loving HongUns play. It's definitely easy to get too caught up in the game and stop enjoying it, HongUn continually reminds me it's fun, and that you can be creative. Hope he keeps it up.

Sky is blue, idra is a hypocrite. All is well in this world. But seriously, idra nydusing Hongun was such an example of his hypocrisy, 2 base push attack which is an all in if it fails. Worse thing is that he was saying in his interview after Boxer owned him that he expected Hongun to cheese.
Alright, I feel like I have to set this up - so I will.
I have been a Hongun fan since the very first moment I saw him. Literally, it was fandom at first site. His hat made me so incredibly happy, I cannot express. Me and my friends joked about it, because EVERYONE else's player portraits have no hats, and Hongun kind of looks like a little old lady in it.
Hongun's pic that instantly made me a fan
Since then, I have been a massive Hongun fanboy - blindly claiming he was the best, the hero of the protoss, etc, etc - I don't know exactly what I saw in him, but I felt something inside me that I havent felt since the first time I saw Boxer.
Now, I have been on TL for a loooong time, A LONG long time (Not on this account, my new name is fairly recent). I have NEVER joined a fan club, ever. Why? because i dont think that a silly little thread with my name in the first post actually accomplishes anything - If I did, I'd be on atleast 2 dozen fanclubs by now, but I just never 'got' it.
I am extremely excited to join this fanclub - as my first fanclub of all time - because Hongun is special. He is a people's champ, a true protoss hero.
Now, I know this post is lengthy - I need to get my feelings for Hongun out, and I need to set up the following story. About 6 months ago, I found a hat on the side of the road. It instantly reminded me of Hongun's hat, so I picked it up, it wasnt too damaged or anything so I started wearing it around and calling it my "hongun hat". After a while the novelty wore off, and I only wore the hat when it rained (Which it does a lot here (Im in vancouver)), I thought my passion was dying.
Dat hat
Hongun went on to do moderately well every season, doing cool things and making me an extremely happy fan (CARIERS! (the first time)). Once I heard the story of that one fan who mailed him a shirt (That inspired hongun to keep playing despite his wrist injury), I knew that I too had to do something.
I took the hat, turned it inside out to the white part, and sharpied Hongun's ID all over it in a fashion that makes the hat wearable in two formations - inside out (Hat was always reversable), and nomal with the front flipped up (Common style wear i live). Below are pictures of me wearing the hat, and the hat in general.
I wear this hat ALL DAY when Hongun plays - i literally scream like a school girl when he makes bold plays, and cry like a baby when he loses.
Now, I have been thinking about the following for a long time - ever since i heard the Tasteless Theme on youtube. I want to make a theme song for Hongun. I am just starting putting it together now (I actually have to learn how to make music on the computer first (I play a tonne of instruments IRL, so I might just record myself)). I will of course post that song/video here as soon as it is done, please know that it might take a while, i'm a full time student afer all!
I will forever be a Hongun fan - if there is any way for Hongun to read this, I would be ecstatic, I want him to know that there ARE fans out there that are as crazy as me about him, and not just bandwagonners - true fans.
So go ahead, add me to that fan list because be it next week, or next year, I will still be Hongun's #1 fan. HONGUN HWAITING!!!
Hmm, interesting post above me. I won't quote it since it is so long though, as that will just be a waste of space. I'm somewhat in the same boat. I am not a huge fanboy of his, but I have been a fan of his for awhile, and I have been hoping he would make a return to the semi finals ever since I first saw him get there. It's a shame to see him go down, but I hope he will bounce back.
As to your remark about not seeing the point of posting in a fan club, I have to disagree. I think "joining" fanclubs is a great way of supporting many players. They don't have to be your favorite, but just supporting the players you like is likely comforting to many of them, and brings more attention to those players if their fan clubs are bigger. In any event, I think it is fine if you want to give putting your name in a fan club some value, but I don't think that you should have the impression that blatantly showing support for community members to be a waste of time.
My 'beef' with the fanclub sign up system as it is now, is that there is no commitment. Anyone can just throw their name on there because they saw a cool play and went "Wow! this guy is pretty neat"
To me, a fanclub is something more, something passionate.
I totally understand the fact that fanclubs give the players motivation though, and hopefully my post will find it's way to hongun and bring a smile to his face to keep fighting and win + Show Spoiler +
That 1-1-1 hold on your stream was so sexy words can not even begin to describe it. Please just smash through code a and get back into code s, not enough blink stalkers without you
Someone should update the OP a bit about HongUn, needs a refresh imo with new pictures and reworked design etc, it doesnt even include his stream link.
Tonight made me sad Especially with Wolf talking about possible retirement for HongUn. I really hope he stays, but if he moves onto something else, I wish him the best of luck.
I don't know where else to ask, since HongUn has no stream thread, but does he have a streaming schedule? Or does he just stream whenever he feels like it?

His stream link is actually in the OP, under the Links section. If you have anything you would like me to add to the OP, PM it to me and I'll stick it in.
I hate very few people but deezer is one of them, please dont let that cheater discourage you from streaming hongun. Your fans really appreciate it. You should of seen your chat while you where playing, they wanted some blood. We need someone to go to if we want to see carriers and mamaships xp. And of course the super effective macro nexus.
Here's a replay that HongUn fans might love. A 40ish in game minute game against IMNestea.
I want to describe more, but I really don't want to spoil you as to the awesomeness of that game. Hopefully someone can cast this game since it really deserves to be seen/ =D
Add me to the list! Hongun is the best streamer around!!! He's a strategy on demand streamer in fact, he'll do whatever build the fans ask, even MACRO NEXUS XD. Hongun Hwaiting!!!

It's from ladder so no copyright issues involved. And it'd be awesome if you cast the game (and left a link in the fan club too).
EDIT: On a side note, I don't know if HongUn is going to try and qualify for GSL Code A (hope he does), but good luck if you do!
I'll be casting this game (http://drop.sc/75179) with my casting group (probably a duo cast) sometime in the near future. Come check out our new channel we just decided to make one but have been casting local events for a little over a year. We are literally uploading our first recorded casts now, so check back to see the full batch once it's done!
A lame player with awful personality and boring game play, such as Idra, has 1000000000000 fans and 10000000000000000000 posts per day, but a fun guy, who plays carriers and macro nexi only has like 13 pages in his fan club? What the fuck is wrong with this world!?
Ok I've updated the members list. I feel like the OP needs to be reworked a little, such as a list of his results, but it's quite a big job so may take a while.

Poor thing! eSahara should be providing you with some food at least!
Hongun good to see you on the other day! Maybe you could upload a replay pack with a few recent games? I want to message someone like Husky to see if they will cast your games and put them on youtube. You have very interesting play and I think you deserve a lot more fans.
Has he been playing less or what? It seems that once he fell out of GSL, he left Prime (to practice less?)
I remember in interview he said he had a bigger goal/dream than SC2, and if he fell out of GSL and/or the CTS stopped him from playing any longer (basically he can't stay in GSL) then he might just quit SC2 and go do that other dream.
So is he playing less cus of CTS, or is it cus he's only playing now to stream for side money while he is trying to accomplish whatever dream he still has?
I hope to see him back, he was so good, so fun to watch! I miss him getting top 8 or top 4 so many times
(Also does he practice outside of streaming, as in the streaming is just when he practices on ladder and not with practice partners doing specific things, so that other players don't see his strats, or is his streaming all he does for practice?)
I don't think he will come back. Since he fell out of Code S, he was never in that shape again, to really compete. Sad thing, he was one of the funniest characters in the korean SC2 scene.
A player who uses carriers and unique, interesting strategies? And listens to TOUHOU music?
Well, I hope he continues to stream/play SC2 in his free time, which he seems to be doing now xD He is still high leveled and if he plays a couple hours a day he can probably maintain this relative skill level. I can settle for that.
he's still on foreign team absolute legends (they absorbed esahara) along with maka
but it doesn't seem like he's focusing on sc2 100% anymore, or at least won't be back for a while... idk though, maybe he just wants to tone down the practice to let his wrists heal more, then come back, then do whatever goal in life he said he had, or maybe he's trying to achieve that other goal in life then will come back once his wrists are fine
either way though i'm sure he'll keep playing and streaming at a high level, and if he wants to come back I'm sure he can catch up within a year, he still rapes NA GM so he's probably high master KR still
I just saw on Wolfs twitter that HongUn made it through the Code A qualifiers!! That means we will see him back in the GSL for Season 3! Awesome, go HongUn
Hey do you guys remember when hongun said he got a paper Stalker as a present and that there was something special inside? He said he didn't open it yet since it was so well made. I wonder if he ever opened it and if he did, what it was... maybe a love confession?
