2pm without Jay is like what 4minute would be without HyunA except worse because I think at least one chick whose name I don't know actually has talent and none of them are gigantic douchebags.
Jiyoon or Gayoon. Hyuna really isn't very talented, she just knows how to wear short shorts and grind on camera.
The problem when you have these groups with no one particularly talented member is you're pretty much reliant on having them all. This isn't really a problem usually since member losses usually happen in newer groups. A group like 4Minute you're just gonna ride the ez train as one of the 5 at this point. You could probably swap the most unpopular member and be okay (hi Jihyun), but you're the more established the group the more people are gonna get mad at changes.
Kara is another group of the same sort: they don't have any one particularly good singer, dancer, actor, etc. They're all just middling.
A group like A Pink would lose a LOT if they didn't have Eunji or T-ara with Soyeon. They have really dominate vocal leads.

I agree with the rest of you post, I just meant more of from a popularity standpoint. After Jay left JYP made do by promoting Taec and Nichkhun as much as possible but they were far more popular because of Jay than they were as a group, much like 4minute is much more popular because of Hyuna than anything the group has done.
They're no match for Soyeon vocally. Soyu is actually a pretty good vocal, but she's not Hyorin tier. They're so small though that that can't afford to lose Bora or Hyorin, but it's not because of vocal talent. Dasom could probably get replaced by another generic idol since she doesn't really contribute anything.

For the kind of music that T-ara puts out they don't need an amazing vocalist though. EJ/Hyo's level of talent is plenty good enough for dance music.

I don't see anything wrong with 4Minute. I think they're well rounded and underappreciated. I think if they keep the spotlight off Hyuna (ie Love Tension) and just keep her as a dancer with some vocal parts (like hyoyeon) they will be fine
Also, I'd consider HSY to be the best singer in Kara. I just wish they gave her more solo parts to let her shine
obligatory hsy#1 that white dress........................................
Also, TuElite can you upload or stream Karasia videos someday? I've been getting into Kara alot lately, and would love to see some of their live vids
The point is those groups don't have anyone outstanding to carry them musically. The problem as I see it with 4minute is that they rely on 1 person to get them popularity. Take out HyunA and no one is enough of a standout to get them attention, and musically they haven't ever released anything that would instantly make them big, like Kara had with Mister or Secret had with Magic/Madonna. They'd essentially be riding on Cube's money, much like Rainbow has been doing (from a popularity standpoint) on DSP's dime. And that's really only good enough to carry you from one promotion cycle to the next, you're not gonna be huge.
This is just something I've been idly wondering, but why do so many bands (Rainbow, After School, A-Pink, even Kara) need to be girl bands when they're often not even compensating for each other or doing harmonies/countermelodies? It's like they're girl bands for the sake of being girl bands. Is it really just eye candy? More people make better dance numbers? I don't get it, especially if you factor in the time and money it takes to train 5 people as opposed to one.
This might apply to boy bands too but I honestly don't know them well enough to say.
Well some of them are designated rappers, dancers, and other stuff too, and together it's more eye-candy I guess. Dunno really. I'm under the impression that usually they're all trained together more or less at the same time (many many many trainees out there) so it doesn't really matter anyway I guess.
it's a numbers game everyone has different tastes, more people in a group = appeals to more niches = covers a larger demographic
also the fact that even though idols are probably all individually pretty, certain members stick out because they're more attractive. the whole thing with 'a 6/10 girl that surrounds herself with ugly friends turns into an 8/10' also applies even more to idols.

Because many of them aren't talented enough to make it on their own, but they collectively have pretty enough faces to draw interest into their groups. I mean, eye candy is a HUGE factor. If you're walking down the street, would you notice the one musician on the street playing a violin or the 5 hot girls that are walking together?

Also this and you might be referring to the cheerleader effect, where collectively girls look more attractive, but then if you look at them one by one, they are uglier.

Your first mistake is to use the word band, they're really just idol groups in the end rather than artists or such.
Yeah also what andyrau said. I was going to mention that but wasn't sure, since it was a random guess. Cheerleader effect as well haha ASie. And yeah technically they're not really a band since they don't play instruments

Also, the more people in a group you have, the more variety shows you can do, the more CF's you can do, etc.
New leeSA cover of Moves Like Jagger on their YT if you check it. Did this get posted? I searched but didn't find it.
I'm actually liking Pandora. It's classic KARA. I don't look for every song from them to stand up to the vocal levels of the better groups. Just need a little HSY and Gyuri actually looking really nice in this promo cycle. Just ignore Nicole's disastrous mop of a do and all is well.
