Turns out CR (and thus HS) completly mistranslated that part o/ I think that ended along the lines of commie being right? Inb4 funi translator just has stock translations for every phrase. yeah it was commie being right, or rather understanding what was meant. You looked it up in the books iirc and only said it's her usual catchphrase
@Numy: So basicly a lot of stuff that is considered obvious will be left out in japanes phrases. Most famous example, coined by elem, would probably be ski death (ehehe) as in "I love you". When really the phrase has neither object nor subject. It's just an adjective and a verb. Same goes with Hachikuji's catchphrase 噛みました. Note on that: I assumed it's just that based on what I remembered hearing half a year ago without looking it up. Eca looked it up saying it's just her catchphrase but never said what it is and I don't like her either so... it's something along those lines either way
Back on topic, that catchphrase is merly a verb in past tense, in this case the verb "to bite" that has no object to it and correctly get's translated as "sorry I bit my tongue" or something along those lines whenever she uses a wrong name for Araragi because that's obviously what she's trying to say. She said the exact same thing when she kissed Araragi in the end and CR/HS translated it as exactly the same as what they used before, whatever that was, when in fact the meaning did change to the kiss, and not her biting off her own words.

I see that's rather fascinating. The images I posted earlier then would be incorrect translation?

Even just common sense tells you that it was wrong ;;
I did explain the thing but only to maru I think, anyway tl;dr Hachikuji punned on her catchphrase to mean something entirely different. Funi translation drew from stock translation of phrases and got it wrong.

I don't have the 2nd season books nor do I have my animu HDD over here, so can't check what she said exactly until Friday... maybe she did say something else because scumbag eca who checked what she said for us never actually went ahead and typed out what she said... I'm working on recollection here
but I'd say my reconstruction makes more sense

Are you looking just for what she actually said that line? 失礼。噛みました。

I see. I always assumed she said her catch phase when she was referring to the kiss itself not actual words which is what I think you guys are telling me. If that's the case I don't really see an issue with translating the phase directing and making the viewer see the difference in the phase than translating the actual meaning? I guess you could say the viewer should realize she's saying her catchphrase just by hearing it so a direct translation is more useful

Yeah, just wanted to have that confirmed

The translation from Commie was just really way better than the stock translation from funi. I'll see if I can find it in irc logs.

If you can't then next best option is probably to specify what she bit, or at least have something that works in proper context.
The worst is using stock translation of the line and being completely wrong o/

Ah I had a commie rip here too. She says My apologies I bit your tongue. I see what you mean.

+ Show Spoiler [Funimation] +
+ Show Spoiler [Commie] +
Maybe I'm putting a little too much emphasis on it but like I said, looking back on it seeing the funimation translation I really think the Commie one is waaaay better. They translated the usual catchphrase as "I bit my tongue" and all they did is exchange that my with a your and you're done.
Gets the job done for people to recognize that it's the catchphrase assuming you watched Commie all along AND it kind of does the job of a pun in as good as a way as you'll get in english without having huge TL: notes above and explaining that wall of text from me above.
And they actually understood the meaning...
|
Yea definitely. I thought they may have changed it more but it's a rather elegant solution. Tells you it's still the catchphrase but also explains the subtle change in meaning. It's a simple solution which is really important and normally hard to do.
Man this went way off track but still really interesting. It's a bit sad how much meaning and character can be lost in translations.

I just see it as lazy literal translation of her catchphrase that lucked out and worked. It isn't like the phrase hasn't been around since bake.

I guess the issue lies in what they used for her catchphrase before ("I bit my tongue" vs "I flubbed" vs "I stuttered"), and it just so happened that only Commie's version fit in that particular scene (it was also the only version that made sense here). It's actually a huge difference in terms of impact of the scene imo, so good thing I watched Commie.

Ugh, there are people who actually do that? I almost want to ask someone to ban him. I feel soiled just posting in the same thread. whats your opinion on people who skip scenes then? Show's most likely shit then and should prob just drop it instead. I know I've done that occasionally when I should have just dropped the show instead. Gotta learn from ones mistakes.
I remember skipping through one or two scenes in an episode once because that was just unbearable while the rest was really good (the whole show). Can't remember which show it was, though.

Well you can obviously watch whatever you want however you want to. Just seems like you missing out on more than half the enjoyment.
I agree. Speedreading can be saved for newspapers etc. I actually tried to speedread a novel once. Ended up in missing a lot of connections and details. Not because I didn't comprehend them at the time I read them but because I didn't remember them if a connection was made later on.

Chaika ep 2
+ Show Spoiler +Grapes! So we get confirmation that Vivi has a scar on her neck like the other Chaika's. Vivi's is also the only backstory we got so far on any of the Chaikas so I'm willing to assume that she's the most reliable. She's an orphan of unknown origin that gets taken in and trained as an assassin. Add the neck wound along with Chaika transformation I bet all the Chaika's are either Orphans that the Wizard does some procedure to or bodies if reanimates somehow by attaching a head to them. I think the Orphan route is more likely, he took a bunch of orphans with him when he leaves the city and does experiments until he's able to get it right then releases them all over the nation. There's some kind of trigger that needs to happen post Gaz's death for them to transform, Vivi's was traumatic experience but I find it hard to believe she's never suffered emotional trauma like that growing up the way she did. When they get to the island they'll find all the bodies of the failed experiment. Going to be rough!
It's kind of weird how this show is turning more into a mystery with cute Chaika moments than an action show it first seemed like. There's so much fishy shit going on
