The FSN anime is shit compared to the VN. They mostly follow the main route, but took random parts from other routes for seemingly no reason. And the UBW movie is essentially two hours of fight scenes without a coherent story. Just read the VN. It's a huge time commitment, but the story is so much better, it's not even funny.
Ecael would probably tell you to play Tsukihime before you play FSN though. I wouldn't disagree. The Tsukihime anime is also shit, in case you were wondering.

I think one reason some Nanoha fans don't like it, is because the 3 heroines in the show grow up into women, and they are like "BAWWW NO MORE LOLI"
Nanoha and Fate's epic moments in Strikers were so good too, lol + Show Spoiler +

No, the problem with strikers was that they introduced a whole bunch of boring characters and half of the show was stupid training bullshit. Those two clips you showed were the only good moments of the series.
A's was good though.
Since you seem to like the show, could you explain why people actually like that? Everything I've seen makes me want to hate Nanoha. I am genuinely interested in what you like about the show though. (I'm really not trying to come off as an ass or anything, but everything I've seen just makes me feel like I hate the show without ever having seen an episode.)
People who think they'll hate a show without ever watching an episode make me sad :/
Nanoha works because it mixes bullshit mahou shoujo happy happy idealism with shounen action sequences. Honestly, I personally think it only works in A's, but it works well. The characters are interesting enough (way more interesting than 90% of shounen characters) and the fight scenes are well done.
That said, there are lots of better shows out there. For me season 1 was tolerable (movie is much better), season 2 was good, season 3 was crap. If you're interested I'd watch the movie to kinda get an idea of what Nanoha is like.
Thanks for the straight answer. It certainly doesn't sound very appealing to me, but maybe I will watch the movie just to see.
Nanoha actually isn't a Mahou Shoujo show. Its a Mecha show cleverly disguised as Mahou Shoujo.
And then there's Nanoha Force which is slightly less cleverly disguised. Seriously, I was like WTF when I first saw the designs.
Nanoha works because instead of being a "hardcore" mahou shoujo show, it's about beating your enemies into submission with giant ridiculous beam attacks until they become your friend. There's less focus on the cute (although there's plenty of that regardless) and more of the "holy crap did they just do that?" type stuff.
Aww, that hurts man. But yea, i didn't play Tsukihime VN or F/SN VN but I watched both animes, I like Tsukihime better, probably because i played Melty Blood a lot before. I can't really judge how they stack up otherwise, cause its biased.

For once I agree with you. He does get slightly more bearable in the non-Fate routes though.

No offense meant. It's just that a lot of shows you talk about hating are actually ones that I find good or okay. It can't really be helped, I guess.

Tsukihime's story is much better than FSN's, imo. The only way in which I think Tsukihime is less suited for people new to VNs lies in the fact that it's rather old, so the sprites look kinda bad (even though they were apparently good for a doujin group of that time), and the music can also feel dated at times. That's it. The two stories are incomparable.
Both games start out with a fairly tame arc so that first time readers aren't overwhelmed and so that the setting of the story can be introduced. The second playthrough then delves deeper into the story, and that's when things start getting good.
Yes I was surprised when Tsukihime turned out to be only ~350 MBs. I also read that I should acquire a different set of tracks too, which I have not yet.
Tsukihime's not voiced. That saves an incredible amount of space. And they probably used CDs. Were DVDs even popular back in 2000? I can't remember anymore.
Off-topic but it is strange indeed; I remember when DVDs were 'new' and were beginning to be commercialized.
I assume voice enhances VN experience? I remember an option of installing voice pack during installation process but I chose not to partly because I have roommates who may think strange.
Voice is nice to have. I usually don't listen to full sentences because the games would take far to long to complete if I did, but it kinda feels weird if there's no voice. It's strange.
Also, you're playing a VN. You're already pretty damn close to "strange" as it is.
Got the ending where you turn back to normal. Disappointingly boring end. What was surprising was the fact that Saya actually loved Fuminori. I expected him to get slaughtered. =/

I agree with you on the Force designs. I mean, WTF, that is not even close to "Magical Girl" anymore. But it does help that they changed the title from Mahou Shoujo to Mahou Senki (while keeping the MS initials).
But the new designs are probably my favorite part about Force so far. The story is not that intriguing. I still hope that they adapt it someday (with better pacing than the manga has shown).

Is it bad that I was rooting for Saya?
Just wait till you get into that whole denpa+kinda guro genre. The only saving grace for me is that I have yet to get insane enough to play anything but the remakes of the PC98 games lol~
We need to keep in mind that in the context of the Nanoha series, mahou isn't magic, but a magical cannon. Literally.
As for the Lyrical component of the title, that I believe was something that carried over from the spinoff eroge that eventually turned into Nanoha. I think all the stuff about how Nanoha originated as a minor character in an eroge who got her own mahou shoujo spinoff game should be on the English wiki. If not I'll go read it up again to summarize.
Also, A's is not Special A's, that's a whole different anime/manga. Hope someone caught that comment already and spared him the download time.
Tsukihime is better without a doubt. F/SN is a nicer introduction to the VN world because it involves less denpa elements like Tsukihime did.
And yes, Tsukihime used CDs, DVDs were not that popular back then and a doujin circle probably can't afford that.
To be exact, my recommendation would be to read Tsukihime and never touch F/SN.

EDIT: minor stuff.
It really depends, in some VNs that were made without voice in mind (type-moon games) you won't feel much of a difference whether there is voice or not. In Liar-Soft's steampunk series, which does from partially voiced to fully voiced over time, you will appreciate voice more in that a lot more things are expressed in the feelings within those words. Not to mention how Liar simply used voice to dub for the rubi instead of having actual text. Well, the latter is something that's more applicable for Japanese speakers. Then there are some games that were really just designed with voice in mind, something like Muramasa by Nitro+ definitely wouldn't be nearly as good without the voices, etc.
Overall, it depends on the VN in question, but if the VNs were just made without a voice component to start with you can safely assume that voice is not really essential. Then there are things like Clannad, but we'll just leave it out of this
I tried to start Bakemonogatari but I stopped after seeing multiple instances of lines in each frames. Is moving frame-by-frame the only way to watch it? Is there a site where someone compiled a list of those moments?
Don't bother unless you intend on learning Japanese and reading the original novels, they are something there to keep the atmosphere for the novel readers as well as to elaborate some wordplay when one shows up. Luckily, the latter will take significantly longer on screen so you won't have to pause every time to understand the jokes.
But yeah after I read the novels I just don't even pause to read the lines, I mean just by a glimpse you'll know what they are anyway. It is kind of a cliffnotes version of the episode in a way.
On February 06 2011 17:04 Wala.Revolution wrote: Concerning Bakemonogatari: In the early part of the episode one, starting with the 'Blood' along with the Kanji character, you see flashes of lines that are too fast to comprehend without pausing. Perhaps this is the opening?
Right, I remember what your talking about now. IIRC the subs I watched actually subbed those lines, but I rarely paused for them. They mostly were something like a thought about something. They were like, one line philosophical musings on something related to what was going on, or something. I never paid them too much attention.
It really depends. The kanjis that were mixed into the actual animation tends to be an artistic thing to give you a better idea of these supernatural things at hand. Well, that's more of a settings thing and won't come into play till later on in the series, so not really important.
As for the actual lines that are getting shown, there are also some variations too. The opening ones in the beginning of the episode is, like I said above, basically a cliffs notes version of the episode. There are other points when a character said something important (see Gahara-san's talk of alchemy in the first episode or so), they'll throw up the line in text to emphasize the point. The humor lines work like that too. There are musings from point to point, but those are significantly rarer in comparison iirc.
I love how Bakemonogatari keeps coming back again and again as a topic in this thread; I also love every new viewer's reaction to the series, pretty entertaining to witness all of the "wtf-is-this?" reactions. =p
Still waaaaaiting for a confirmation air date for Kizumonogatari (I think that's what it was called), but given that SHAFT is airing two other series later in Spring, I don't think it's coming up anytime soon.

Only thing concrete about Kizumonogatari seems to be a 2011 airing date, Summer also makes sense since it won't take more than 13 episodes to do. Well, people will appreciate having Hirano Aya actually getting a line after a whole season of being listed and not speaking, I suppose.
I personally can't wait till Nisemonogatari, need more Fire Sisters and need Shinobu to start talking at last.
EDIT - or not lol, people starting petitions to sac Hirano Aya from Kizumonogatari. Oh the hilarity.

Well I finished Planetarian. Roughly 3 hours of reading. It was short but sweet and sad. What I have to say is + Show Spoiler +
FUCK YOU KEY. Why the hell do you have to make me cry in every goddamn 1 of your productions?! WHY?! Same with Clannad, same with Angel Beats and now Planetarian. Do you people enjoy squeezing tears out of your viewers that much?! Jeez -.- + Show Spoiler +
I wasn't serious (at least not totally serious). I do find Key to be a great studio (Jun Maeda for writing it all too), and they do excel at what they write (drama) but fuck, I dont wanna cry every single time ;/. Wish they'd do a bit more light hearted stuff.
Next stop is Tsukihime, and then Fate/Stay Night ;;

What?! Madness.
Are you really surprised? Considering the vitriol that the Otaku community can show, this really shouldn't be a surprise haha.
Pretty nice battle. I'm still kinda amazed that Yang could hold off the entire Imperial fleet. And whatever happened to Mecklinger? Is he still hanging out at the end of the corridor?
This picture is great when taken out of context. Everyone's dead! :O Oh well.
Kircheis still advising Reinhard. And Hilda's still no match for a ghost. I will say though, I really didn't expect peace talks at this point in the show.
Yeah, I'm almost certain that's the only time she uses her incantation. Which is hilarious in hindsight.
I guess you could try to justify it by saying she's so overpowered that she doesn't need an incantation, but nobody else in the series seems to use one either. I guess everyone's more or less a super elite anyway.
