Thank you for making me aware that Nanoha Movie has been subbed. Madoka had been making me even more excited to watch it, since both are awesome atypical magical girl shows.
I really liked how they transferred the series to a movie and changed/added a lot of stuff such as the image training or location of battles to allow for extra large explosions while still keeping true to the original. Although I admit some technical details were lost if you have not seen the series, the main plot was still clear for the most part. The battles were spectacular and made Nanoha seem even more of a badass 9 year old magical girl than the series. Same goes for Fate, and I was just itching to hear Nana Mizuki's Don't be Long play when Fate owned dimensional monsters the entire latter half of the movie, being the Nana fanboy that I am.
Another thing I really liked + Show Spoiler +The extra story behind Precia that was not shown in the anime. It really gave Precia the character development/background that she lacked in the series, and made her seem far more tragic as opposed to crazy evil. I could really appreciate her feelings of desperation as well as love for Alicia especially when she admitted she knew she was planning to commit taboo and such. It was a much needed flashback because from what I recall, the series tried to portray her this way but just didn't have the time. Very satisfied with the movie and absolutely can't wait for the next one as Nanoha A's was the best. I'm not a fan of Strikers, but I would be happy with a 3rd movie as well, if only to see more Nanoha and Fate awesomeness, as Sentenal showed =D

LoGH 81-82 + Show Spoiler +HOLY SHIT!!!!!
They almost made me have a heart attack when they said Mittermeyer could have died, and I'm happy he didn't. But I didn't expect Yang to die! I thought Reinhard could die, as it would have created a lot of problems everywhere, perfect for a lot of action, but Yang's death only contributes to Reinhard being even more overpowered...
I'm so sad right now...
LoGH is so awesome...
I don't know what's gonna happen now. The show will certainly feels very different, just like when Kircheis died...

Anyone here watching Hourou Musuko? (I'm not gonna dig through all the pages here, because this thread is way too fast moving and long for that.)
I just finished eopisode 4 and I have to say I love the pacing of the series so far. Just enough in each episode to make you genuinely interested in the next episode, without resorting to cliffhanger endings. I'm a bit of a sucker for shows that have serious emotional components, but I find that so many of them bother me for other reasons.
But yeah, so far the only 2 anime that have successfully brought a tear to my eye have been Hourou Musuko and Simoun (that show has some really deep messages if you look for them). Actually, I think Piano might have also have, now that I think of it.
Anyone care to suggest something like those? I'm always looking for something to watch and I find myself enjoying that sort of thing more than most other anime. The thing is, there are also a million romance anime out there that just bother the hell out of me (Kanon, etc. etc.) so I have a hard time figuring out which ones are actually worth my time.

In ANY anime. Watching someone we have been following for 80 episodes bleed to death right then.... I'll c/p what I wrote earlier about his death, since its now relevant. On February 06 2011 12:21 Sentenal wrote:Show nested quote +On February 06 2011 08:57 tyr wrote:So I just finished watching LoGH. It took me roughly 3 weeks to watch the 110 episodes (yeah, i know ...). I was really amazed by the depth of the story. A lot of characters, a lot of main characters, and there's been a lot of description on all of them. IT's really awesome, they really took the time to build them. Same goes for the story. There wasn't a single time where I could have predicted what will happen. Even when I was sure of something, something else happened. + Show Spoiler [dont read if you havent finished watch…] +The death of Yang Wenli really caught me offguard for instance when i was more or less sure he would be saved (by Julian most likely). I kinda refused to believe it and even thought it was Julian having a nightmare or something. But then I think it was Attenborough who said "this isn't a third rate anime, the dead don't come back", I laughed. Anyway yeah, I realllly enjoyed watching it and even if it's kinda long, it's NEVER boring. One of the best animes I've ever watched. The part where Yang died took me entirely by surprise. It was easily the saddest thing in any anime ever. I've never seen Clannad: After Story, but people claim that one is sad... But there is no way that can even come close. Watching Yang bleed to death was like watching a long time friend die. We saw him rise through the ranks, we saw his victories, we saw his love for Jessica, we saw him try to raise Julian as best he could, we really felt for him when Jessica died. We were with him all during his struggles against the Alliance Government. We even attended his wedding. And finally, after many hard fought battles, Yang finally achieves what he set out for, a chance for peace. And then... He dies... Our friend for 82 episodes that we had all come to like and relate to, was gone. No anime even comes close to the emotion from that event.

I watched episode 1 of Madoka, and I don't know if I can get past the magical girl aspect (never been one of the genres I like), but it does seem very interesting.
I've also been watching Fractale and Gosick, and honestly, I think that Fractale, Gosick, Madoka and Hourou Musuko are probably the only anime worth watching this season, and that makes me sad.

The characters are hard to keep straight. I've had to look up wikipedia a couple times to keep the characters straight myself. The fact that none of the main characters stand out more than the secondary characters in the art makes it hard to keep track of everyone.

Reading the wikipedia article helps a lot. I've gotten a lot better at figuring out who's who an what the backstory that's relevant to whatever's happening is, but every now and then I need to check and make sure. I didn't follow the manga either, but I might just have to after I'm done watching the series (and that's a HUGE deal for me, because I'm really not a fan of manga).

I never meant to imply that it was anything close to a traditional magical girl anime, but the fact that it still is close enough to be lumped into that genre may be enough. Then again, I DID watch Magic Knight Rayearth (and love it to death, as well, despite the fact that my GF hinted that that was a bad thing). I may pick it up sometime later when I have more free time.
I just watched Fractale 4, and I'm not gonna spoiler anything, but I like the direction things seem to be going, the plot is beginning to go somewhere. And as for originality, I can't really comment on that, half the stuff I considered to be somewhat original (or an original take on an idea) most other people I know scoffed at :/
And yeah, the whole mystery thing in gosick is pretty transparent. But I like the characters, and I'd like to see it become a whole lot less episodic, because there's plenty of room for expanding on the relationships and actually making a plot worth watching there. It's just a matter of moving away from the "case an episode" style... (They could pull a Witch Hunter Robin and make it interesting halfway through or something)

Normally I would be okay with watching a show if one character is extremely moe (like Victorique, who is a goth loli, one of the greatest character archetypes I can think of), but I can't bring myself to watch a mystery show where the mysteries are terrible.

Since you seem to like the show, could you explain why people actually like that? Everything I've seen makes me want to hate Nanoha. I am genuinely interested in what you like about the show though. Madoka is anything but a typical magic girl anime. It's shaping out to be one of my favorite shows, ever. I haven't watched Fractale 4 yet, but from what I've seen it's been nothing too special or original. And I dropped Gosick because the mystery aspect was just sketchy at best. And yeah, it can be kinda hard to tell the characters in Hourou Musuko apart. It took me a while to figure out who the female lead was -_- I never meant to imply that it was anything close to a traditional magical girl anime, but the fact that it still is close enough to be lumped into that genre may be enough. And as for originality, I can't really comment on that, half the stuff I considered to be somewhat original (or an original take on an idea) most other people I know scoffed at :/ And yeah, the whole mystery thing in gosick is pretty transparent. But I like the characters, and I'd like to see it become a whole lot less episodic, because there's plenty of room for expanding on the relationships and actually making a plot worth watching there. It's just a matter of moving away from the "case an episode" style... (They could pull a Witch Hunter Robin and make it interesting halfway through or something) Edit: Man this thread moves fast, I'm not used to threads on forums that move this quickly, lol. The forum I spend most of my time on has a grand total of about 10 people who actively post, and even our major threads usually take a year to reach 100 pages, lol. Normally I would be okay with watching a show if one character is extremely moe (like Victorique, who is a goth loli, one of the greatest character archetypes I can think of), but I can't bring myself to watch a mystery show where the mysteries are terrible.
well, considering the other shows on right now it's not hard to find an extra 30 minutes a week, to see if the show is going to get better. And I don't even like it because of the archetypes, I just think that as characters they did a really good job with Kuja and how he interacts with Victorique. At this point I'm kinda ignoring the "mystery" aspect of it.

Thankfully I have enough finished shows to keep me occupied

Ahh, yeah, I'm actually having quite a bit of trouble finding finished shows that I want to watch. I'm not one of those people who goes to insane depths to find stuff, and has near encyclopedia knowledge of anime in general, so I can't just whip off the name of some show I haven't watched and think "ok, I'm gonna watch this now". I did try watching Fist of the North Star, but I found it hard to keep watching something that damned long. I swear I will finish it one day :/
