GGO was hilarious and distubing. I didn't care for SAO so I'm giving this a try and I like it. Not going to watch SAO though.

I'm also not quite sure if + Show Spoiler + it's all just some exaggeration and pito isn't planning to do any of that or if it's true.

I don't mind some angst in the anime, even if it gets as bad as Nana though ideally, a happy ending or a reasonable closure that won't leave me mad or annoyed would be nice haha. Also, I don't mind if they show as much umm explicit acts so long as they don't seem to be doing it for the hell of it. Basically, I want an adult romcom that makes me feel angsty (lol) but also satisfied with how things progress. Most romcoms seems to focus on teenagers and around school and the main MCs don't even get together till the last episode or two. Something that I really liked with Nana, even if things were tragic. Makes for an interesting experience to know about some of those things and then suddenly go "ooooh, that's why he's always making up these weird dishes at the start" etc. So I def like that part of it even if that has very little to do with the series itself. As for girls, I went into it thinking I'd like Megumi the most but the moment she first opened her mouth I basicly ragequitted her train. Good thing it was only a timeskip and she doesn't talk like that anymore (for the most part? I think she's falling back to it sometimes) but quite frankly that has left me scarred. So Megumi is half dead for me. Not like I hate her, she's still adoreable and all but can't be best girl anymore. On the other hand I finally understand why people felt so bad when Tandea Risa had to drop out due to health reasons. She's good and all but I really like her as Erina so far. Probably best girl for me right now even if she didn't get a lot of screentime yet (I just finished ep7, the meat episode). Will be sad when I have to get used to her not being there anymore. Generally speaking there's just a bunch of hilarious stuff. Like the fact that they got Kayanon to play that girl who's obsessed with fermented rice juice (?) served in giant Sake bottles etc. Enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would with all those small things that make me smile inbetween tbh.

Monster + Show Spoiler + Okay so let me try to follow the fate of Johan since his early days he was born as a eugenics experiment to a nice college girl. They live hiding in the Three frogs for a few years, not doing much besides I guess reading the picture books of the guy who orchestrated the experiment to begin with? It's not clear whether they were forced to do that but whatever. Then Anna gets abducted for a month or few and then she sees everyone die, cool. After hearing the story and escaping with Anna, Johan gets the brilliant plan of "nobody can hurt us when there isn't anyone left ( ͡° ل͜ ͡°). He gets to Kinderheim 511 AFTER he formulates the plan and that seems to be the only thing he can remember once he's done with the kindergarten. I mean I guess, he's the monster after all, so alright, he's just fucked up in the head by nature. Presumably he also just enjoys chaos and destruction so it's not that difficult to believe he'd think his plan is awesome. So then Anna finally shoots him after he sees that she's pretty mad he killed everyone she liked. Alright, that kinda makes sense. I'm starting to get questionmarks after Tenma saves him though. So he takes his sister out of the hospital, presumably not by using violence? After she wanted to kill him in the hospital, but ok. She no longer remembers why he should be killed anyway so I guess it's fine. So he leaves her with one foster home while homejumping himself, killing his foster parents one after another and laundering money all the while. Then he continues trying to get money through Shuwald and stuff, this kinda all makes sense. Until he reads the picture book and regains some of his memories. So so far he's just a guy who can't remember his childhood, but he is super smart, super charismatic, angsty as fuck and enjoys causing suffering to boot, so world domination+destruction is his natural goal. Up until this point, I guess it makes sense to me. And everything that comes after that doesn't. Why does he want to kill himself? Is that only after he discovers that Anna still (or rather again) hates him? What is this grand vision of the "landscape of the end"? What is that supposed to be? Is it supposed to be related with the end of Kinderheim on some level? Why does Anna forgive him? Is it just because he wanted to be forgiven 12 years ago or so? Why would he want to be forgiven for killing a few people RIGHT AFTER killing them? Don't you usually want to be forgiven for things you think are bad, so why did he kill them if he thought it was bad? Or did he just not realize that his sister doesn't share the vision of the future where everything burns? Is he too shy to talk about such topics? I guess that's like a third of the things I don't understand Aside that, gotta say I enjoyed seeing the Czech republic in anime for once. Some of the details were pretty fucking amazing. And the few scenes where you had japanese people trying to speak czech were damn hilarious. Also yeah, pretty sure Erina is best girl, although I don't think I've seen too many episodes past the 7 you've seen. You can just tell she definitely develops into best girl.

Johan is through and through a sociopath but he has two people that he to some degree respect and or value, his sister and tenma. His goal is to kill everyone that knows of his existance, including himself and probably leaving his sister and tenma as the sole survivors. This kind of goes back to the first foster parents he murdered before getting shot by his sister, if johan had died then and there from his sister shooting him his goal would've been accomplished, but tenma saved him. I'm not entirely sure if this meant that johan now wanted Tenma to be the one to take his life again, but i imagine so. Johan also has quite a big focus on the idea that everyone is equal in death regardless of their actions in life. But Johan is frankly just an incredibly evil character and some of his actions i believe are intentionally irrational. If his plan of the Ruhenheim Massacre had succeeded and Tenma had killed him then he would've achieved his goal of dying with only his Sister and Tenma knowing that he existed, but obviously his plan failed on multiple levels and eventually completely fell apart because Tenma is the opposite of Johan. A lot of things about Johan just comes down to him being pure evil, that's sort of his role to play as well. It's why he's also constantly compared to Hitler. Just to really emphasize the Monster angle. Not sure if this helped answer your questions, it's also been quite a long time since i watched the series so i might've forgotten some minor details.

Well, and Franz Bonaparta and his clique knew about him. The surviving former director of Kinderheim 511 knew about him too. His mother knew he existed, but she didn't know he was a monster, so I guess she doesn't count. But if that was his goal, then it WOULDN'T have been accomplished had his sister killed him when they were kids. Also, it was a pretty big plot point when his sister realized that what Johan actually wanted wasn't really to be shot, but to be forgiven. Which I don't really get at all. I get that he is pretty much as evil and malicious as it gets, but I don't get why he went from his dream of world domination and destruction to erasing his own existence. I think it's supposed to be somehow related to his regaining of memories ("I've awoken from a dream") but I just don't see any connection whatsoever. Johan also said in that conversation that the whole time he thought the monster was inside him, but now he knows that it's outside (implying it's Bonaparta), but that's demonstrably wrong. But then again why would he lie to a guy he's about to kill. Or to be more meta, why would we get a scene of Johan lying to a guy he's about to kill.

Johan never wanted world domination, that's just what the neo-nazis wanted. Johan just used them for his goals but ultimately it wasn't what he was interested in. Also johan to a large degree believes in nihilism

Well the world domination wasn't the ultimate goal, it was destruction, but you need a lot of power to do that. That's why he collected so much wealth and influence when he was 15 - 20, right? And then got influence over Schuwald to inherit the economic power. Unless he tricked Roberto as well, but then un-tricked him a bit later. Since his plan was to get Schuwald assasinated for his benefit, at least that's what Roberto thought, but after regaining his memories he decided to instead burn the entire library on a pretty short notice. And presumably the landscape of the end is what was reflected in his eyes that traumatized Schuwald such, I don't think he had that before.

I've actually tried watching Honey and Clover twice lol. Got as far as 4 episodes in, maybe worth another try then. Thanks for recommendation! Anyone else have any other similar shows? Thinking about it, it's a bit baffling that there are few such shows. Is it due to viewer demographics or is it just easier to always use a school setting+make the characters unaware etc... to keep things going? Certainly, exploring some of these topics isn't easy but you'd think more writers would visit these topics.

Genshiken Hourou Musuko Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, though I despise it. Uchuu Kyoudai Hyouge Mono Miss Hokusai ...Tentai Senshi Sunred The real answer is to read more manga. Seinen as a whole is just far more prolific in manga.

Really should have watched this sooner but then again, had I watched it sooner I would be left with only stuff like Wotakai, GGO and DxD this season so that hit the spot for me. Realistically speaking there's some things I didn't like. Most notably I just don't care about Kayanon, the guy with the glasses or the guy who specializes in smoking all his dishes. None of them mattered for the most time and the last couple episodes when they finally did get spotlight they just felt out of place for me. The alumni on the other hand were a much better example of sidecharacters done right. I liked them all, except for maybe the guy who was supposed to sound foreign for... well ... sounding really annoyingly foreign. But for the most part I liked the characters, the humour was good, JC Staff was on point, the voicetrap was real as fuck and most of them really managed to shine in their roles.
