Can someone tell me a bit of Saint Seiya? I'm somewhat interested in watching it even though I know nothing about the show. Is it worth watching? How has the 1986 show aged or is there a newer version out that go all the way back? I know of Soul of Gold but that's after the 3 first seasons or? Thanks!
The animation actually holds up fairly well. Storywise it's pretty decent as action anime, but it is a rather straightforward one. If you gonna watch it you need start with original (with is like 100+ eps), After that the Hades chapters. Then there are a bunch OVAs, including soul of gold, which I never got around to watch but heard it's subpar.

+ Show Spoiler [Bakemonogatari ep5] +Ok, this was kind of cool. Thinking back to all the little details of how Crab acted when looking for Snail's home etc., now that it turned out she couldn't see Snail, really hooked me up. The confession from Araragi in the end was also sweet but creepy at the same time.^^ I'm glad we move on now though. Snail was annoying as fuck.
So far this one is a strange horse for me. I really enjoy the shrewd/astute (trying to find the right words in english by looking them up...so yeah, it's probably not gonna be completly accurate) conversations, especially when Crab is talking. Kind of reminds me of The Tatami Galaxy even though in TTG they were handled differently with entirely different tone and theme. I also really enjoy the art direction. Then we have all the random inserts of text that are only there for a blink of an eye. They are starting to annoy me. It feels so prententious that you give the viewer the vibe that something with deeper meaning is hidden there yet, when you pause the video, it's something like an adjective describing the situation/feelings most of the time - something that I can see on the screen anyways. The fanservice is also kind of weird. I usually despise fanservice and the amount of blatant fanservice in this one is putting me off. On the other hand, I still kind of enjoy some scenes because they are done in a rather artistical way and is kind of part of the plot? I guess this is some sort of a guilty pleasure.

Is Gundam reconguista any good?
I've always been a gundam fan and after seeing the origin I'd like to watch a series again. I've seen anything except reconguista and age but apparently age isn't really good. So I'm wondering if I should try it out or if it's better to skip it.
|
Just screened the next season and it looks really meh. The only thing I'm really planning to watch is Boku dake ga Inai Machi. Aside from that I will try out:
- Schwarzesmarken - Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (although the preview was a let down) - Bubuki Buranki (because I don't know anything about it) - Ajin - maybe some of the sci-fi (Dimension W, Divine Gate) or comedy (Marshmellow dude or Sekkou Boys lol) if everything else turns out to be garbage
Still haven't watched s1 of Shirayuki-hime yet. Third cour of Durarara will not be watched weekly be me.

I'd recommend skip Reconguista. :D

Crab is best and fan service is bestest. I don't get why people have such an issue with fan service. I like girls. I like panties. I like panty shots. It's not complicated! Same logic applied to every female body part.
The text inserts aren't meant to be paused for. Generally they go on a colour theme so Red will be action/anger/etc. and I forget the rest. So it just kind of sets the mood while also having additional info(sometimes quotes from novels) while not clunking up the visual. Why was the confession creepy? Are you talking about Crab confession to Araragi?

Well, it's mostly the concept of fanservice (all kinds) that I despise paired with the use of unnecessary sexualisation. The concept as in manipulating the viewers' emotions in order to earn more money.
And what I meant with creepy was his "Senjougahara fascination". But as said, it was sweet and creepy at the same time, with the "creepy part" stemming from the fact that it is Araragi who is saying it.

Ah k well Araragi is a creeper fucker who I am forced to like because Crab likes him.
I don't really get what you saying. All parts of a story are about manipulating the reader/viewers emotions. How is fan service any different? Do you just dislike sexualisation general ie; Adverts featuring half naked men/women? That I don't really care either. Well it puzzles me how we have so much sexualisation while having a society that has such weird view of sex, or should I say weird view of female sexuality.

I like the "Senjougahara fascination" . It's seems so passionate in the hindsight and it's really just the same to all the poetic and just plain cheesy stuff that people with mutual affection say to each other
but yeah araragi is weird

Well, yes and no. I don't dislike sexualisation in general. If it's a show about a love relationship and they kiss, sleep with each other or whatever else I'm completly fine with it. What I'm concerned with is "out of context" pandering or pandering that serves no other purpose. That doesn't have to be sexualised pandering although this is the kind of fanservice with the highest abundancy in anime. I'll try to find an example that isn't about sex. Lets say you have a adorable child sleeping you could do that in three ways:
1. The kid goes to bed, you see them closing their eyes and you go on to the next scene.
2. The kid is sleeping on the lap of their mother, making adorable gestures while sleeping. The mother shows affection.
3. The kid sleeps on a couch/bed/something else, nobody is nearby and they are making adorable gestures.
Nr 1 is showing a SoL piece, reduced to its facts. Nr 2 surely manipulates the viewer into affection for the child. It's not only because we see the child being cute but also because we see the reaction of the mother. The scene also serves as a purpose to show the viewer one of the reasons she is loving her child. Now nr 3 is just aimed at the viewer. There is no other purpose than to get the affection of the viewer. It's something that happens without having the viewer actually think about it.
Specifically about sexualised fanservice: I think the most off-putting thing about it for me is that I feel insulted by the producers. The thought that they seem to think that they can lure in people to pay them money by making them sexually arroused so that they stop their rational thinking is disgusting to me. If it wasn't for that purpose I probably wouldn't care as much. I just have a general hating-attitude towards capitalistic money-making business...

I'd recommend skip Reconguista. :D I'd recommend not listening to Nagisama on this topic since he has poor taste, lacks an attention span, and will often get deep into an anime and then ask questions like "Hey, this Casval guy grows up to be Char?" or other equally "I paid absolutely no attention to anime" questions. The fact that he would even suggest AGE is better than G Reco is more than enough to discard his opinion. He's the type of guy who would hate Turn A Gundam, of all things.
With that said, G Reco is a mixed bag in terms of reception. However, if you have seen everything other than G Reco and AGE, you will probably be just fine with it. Its directed by Tomino, so it has the same old-school directoral style as like the original, Zeta, Victory, or Turn A. Meaning that you will have a lot of crazy characters, stupid characters, or crazy and stupid characters, and it is very "show, not tell". G Reco is also home to the best Gundam fights in the franchise outside of Unicorn. On the whole, the battles in the show are well animated, unique, very imaginative, and chaotic. It also has the greatest scene from any anime ever where a guy takes a shit in his cockpit while this crazy Indian music plays.
AGE on the other hand is pretty bad. Its a generational story, so its hard to just refer to AGE as the whole package, so to break it up, the first part is meh-to-bad, the second part is actually good, and the third part starts off okay and then gets terrible. I watched this one as it was airing, so I don't know if I'd be able to marathon it at this point.

Turn A gundam is probably my favourite. I'll try Reco out and skip age probably. Thanks for the help.

I am completely with you on the subject of fanservice. I either couldn't care less about it, or it bothers me to the point where I will drop the show (fanservice in "K: Return of Kings" and Utawarerumono 2 was one of the reasons for dropping them). That said, the "fanservice" in the Monogatari Series is different in every possible way. I don't agree with everything that is said in the link provided by Toad, but it get's the basic idea: Camera, poses, sexuality and perspective are some of the key elements of the Monogatari Series and almost always have grander goal than just showing you a disconnected pantyshot. They are deliberate and they want to convey something. The camera is usually biased and looks at things from the perspective of one of the character; characters suddenly appear in a different light, not just in terms of sexuality, but also in general demeanor. Part of me wants to recommend you reading the link right away, just so that you don't get the wrong impression. Finding out what the show is all about and noticing all the subtle things is a great reason to re-watch the entire thing, but knowing your backlog if might seem impractical. Being aware of those things right away might actually be the right course of action, despite the link containing minor spoilers - and they really are very minor, as they just tell you what some scenes in Nisemonogatari are like.
The text in between scenes will get less frequent and almost vanish completely later on, so bear with it and ignore it for now, if it bothers you.
|
yeah same here lol. I don't really agree with everything but the basic idea behind it is correct (imo). I thought about telling him to read it right away as well but figured he can just force himself through Nise to avoid the spoilers.
But it really touches greatly on how the depiction changes based on what character we're talking about and how it's what THEY want to do/show to Araragi rather than just fanservice for the viewer because the viewer wants it. In the end it's still fanservice but it feels like there's a strong reason behind it and the way it's shown supports that. Heck, you could even see it in the most recent Owarimonogatari episode with Kanbaru.
As an aside: If you consider that the strong point in Nise, that for once, stems from Shaft and not from the Author. Yeah the conversations are still epic but it's nothing new at that point and it really comes down to being soft-porn. Nishio himself said that he never intended to publish Nisemonogatari and only wrote it for himself to live out his fantasies iirc. But editors went ahead and published it anyways and Shaft animated it
