But they don't actually speak at all until halfway through high school, and even then it's like, a few minutes a week at the most? They suck at speaking the most because for some reason it's just barely a part of the English curriculum. Even including class time, you'd probably spend around 1-2 hours total practicing speaking over 5 years of "studying" lol. At least according to my Japanese friends. Then consider they never use it again, voice actor or not. Also, if they went to a special school for voice acting instead of regular high school, then they'd have even worse English than the already pathetic average (example: Nana Mizuki).
The vast majority can't differentiate between levels of bad English because they have almost nothing to compare it to, except all the bad English they're surrounded by. So most of them don't even what the correct way to speak is anyway, at least until they come across someone fluent. But I guarantee you there are a lot of Japanese people who think they know what's correct pronunciation but don't really. I also noticed that they pronounce English significantly worse when reading off a script compared to speaking casually, which would further exacerbate the issue for voice acting.
a bit beside the point since it's not about japanese doing english lines but instead about english people doing english lines:
there was a nice "article" on that on ANN somewhat lately iirc. Was a question about how they cast the native english speaking people that do single lines if they happen to hire one. Long story short: There's apparently some kind of agency where you as foreigner can sign up to do work like that, foreigner-based shows on TV etc or whatever depending on your japanese skills and what they want. When doing lines for anime they apprently get in there, say the line a couple times, whoever's recording looks around, none of them has a clue about what sounded good, they shrug shoulders and just take one of the recordings. Which is why english speaking people doing english lines in anime doesn't sound all that much better either in most cases. Although for different reasons.
English in K-ON movie was good iirc
except I was answering the guy who specifically asked about Japanese people studying English.
I was aware? the "a bit beside the point" was about what I followed you up on, as a tidbit.
weird how much the meaning changes without the colon.

But it seems to me like the only way to follow any kind of conversation is to actually watch all the animes that are being discussed. Otherwise, how the heck do you know what people are talking about? What do you do if you just want to discuss one or a couple specific animes?
It's true that if you are watching anime from this current season, it's easier to get a discussion going but as mentioned, just discuss the anime in spoilers so: Anime: + Show Spoiler +
If you know the anime you want to discuss, you'll know the name then you can just open the spoiler. If it is a currently running anime, I would watch the latest episode before opening a recent spoiler but if it's older, you can always ask up to what episode the spoiler covers and open based on that.
btw, this may sound complicated lol but it's not XD

That's about how long I spent speaking French in my 6 years of mandatory French classes. No one speaks it outside of Quebec, New Brunswick and federal government jobs anyways.
35th prolly has the best fights and maybe the best girls. Asterisk has not as good fights (but imo a somewhat better *fight/magic system*) but better girls than Calvary. Calvary pretty much just has Stella and some better done fights (The Asterisks mc's weapon looks silly) though Asterisk hasn't had as much fighting yet.
Pretty much what I think about the three battle harems. Asterisk = 35th >> Calvary. Calvary is getting close to drop/begrudging finish territory.
35th has highest quality girl roster. (Ouka, Suginami & Mari all good/very good. 3/4 good girls is a pretty good ratio) Asterisk has high/medium. (Claudia best, the rest are pretty good, pretty much tied with 35th I think) Calvary one good, everyone else is legit terrible. (Stella obv.)
Asterisk has a godly OP, 35th OP pretty good. I think Calvary OP is trash. I think the fights are pretty even across the board, with Asterisk a little behind because there frankly hasn't been that many important ones. With Phoenix Festa starting that'll change though.
A lot of people joked about how Julis and Stella are similar, but MC's are 99% similar across three shows its surreal. Or I guess not, considering JP LN publishing industry..
Asterisk is the only one I liked enough to go and read the LNs.

6 years of French, I can do a mean Je voudrais une baguette s'il vous plaît.
yeah same with me in french. The thing in Europe though is that you can use english for a lot. Just traveling around with classmates for your end of highschool trip and chances are you'll end up outside your country touring prague or whereever else. So there's actually a point in learning english. Also Teamliquid and so on if you're a nerd . For people from Japan there's not really all that much point in actually talking it. Their music charts are the only ones outside 3rd world nations that aren't just english for 90+% of the songs (or so I've heard) so there's a distinct gab there. I'd imagine there's less watching english movies, less chatting in english with people semi-close to you as well since what's really close to them? China? Maybe South Korea... and that's a stretch
We have been thoroughly imperialised by Murrican culture, we are wearing their jeans and listening to their music.
It also helps that in the Netherlands we tend not to dub anything, at best Pokemon or other children shows are dubbed which is why Dutch people are generally very good at English. I'd imagine English in high school helped quite a bit for my friends but for me, all I needed was the Internet and a fuckton of movies/tv shows.
Asia just has that way less and so they suck at speaking English, to my knowledge their writing is fine though.

youtube apparently took down the radio cross video of them taking a written english test with 3 translations they had to do or else I'd link that

edit: after rereading the manga i think we might actually get to the next arc aswell, wow im so hyped for that. cant wait for the saitama fight and how its animated also we might see a glance of a serious punch if we're lucky lol
We will definitely get to the Boros-arc that was pretty clear from the beginning because they always adapted ~4 chapters, sometimes 3, into one episode. The only question is whether the Boros-arc will get 2 or 3 episodes.

thats about it, I sucked at French.
Hah, I know that feeling. I had 3 years of spanish in school and all I could do was to ask for directions, lol. Oh and you could probably give me any verb and I would conjugate it for you because that and tenses was all that we ever did in class... Ofc. I never used my spanish since and forgot about everything.
Sea king definitely ends next episode and boros arc starts right after sea king, and i'm like 99% sure they'll have ep 12 be the episode with the 'serious' punch. So 3 episodes for the boros arc i'm pretty sure.

You mean fubuki? She doesn't appear outside of side-stories until after boros iirc. Chapter 27 ends sea-king. Chapter 28 is fanmail episode + promotion to B-class + licenseless rider treating saitama to food. Episode 9 will likely end on chapter 28.
Chapter 29 is likely where ep 10 will begin, it's where saitama and genos visits bang's dojo and from there they go straight to the S-class meeting and the boros-arc begins.
