Hard to say what show I like better Asterisk or 35th platoon. But both are def better than Calvary.

You don't use it to talk outside of class so japanese people still suck at that.

The vast majority can't differentiate between levels of bad English because they have almost nothing to compare it to, except all the bad English they're surrounded by. So most of them don't even what the correct way to speak is anyway, at least until they come across someone fluent. But I guarantee you there are a lot of Japanese people who think they know what's correct pronunciation but don't really. I also noticed that they pronounce English significantly worse when reading off a script compared to speaking casually, which would further exacerbate the issue for voice acting.

But they don't actually speak at all until halfway through high school, and even then it's like, a few minutes a week at the most? They suck at speaking the most because for some reason it's just barely a part of the English curriculum. Even including class time, you'd probably spend around 1-2 hours total practicing speaking over 5 years of "studying" lol. At least according to my Japanese friends. Then consider they never use it again, voice actor or not. Also, if they went to a special school for voice acting instead of regular high school, then they'd have even worse English than the already pathetic average (example: Nana Mizuki). Was a question about how they cast the native english speaking people that do single lines if they happen to hire one. Long story short: There's apparently some kind of agency where you as foreigner can sign up to do work like that, foreigner-based shows on TV etc or whatever depending on your japanese skills and what they want. When doing lines for anime they apprently get in there, say the line a couple times, whoever's recording looks around, none of them has a clue about what sounded good, they shrug shoulders and just take one of the recordings. Which is why english speaking people doing english lines in anime doesn't sound all that much better either in most cases. Although for different reasons. English in K-ON movie was good iirc

Though I like Asterisk more, I think Calvary has points in its favour including some more interesting fights at times.

Asterisk has not as good fights (but imo a somewhat better *fight/magic system*) but better girls than Calvary. Calvary pretty much just has Stella and some better done fights (The Asterisks mc's weapon looks silly) though Asterisk hasn't had as much fighting yet. The full version of Asterisk's ED is really good too. https://vimeo.com/143539372

But it seems to me like the only way to follow any kind of conversation is to actually watch all the animes that are being discussed. Otherwise, how the heck do you know what people are talking about? What do you do if you just want to discuss one or a couple specific animes? You pretty much just start talking about whatever anime you want to talk about then respond to whoever chimes in. Just post a question/statement about a show and go from there. People mostly talk about the current anime season but people will still talk about shows in the past as well.

Something like that anyway. Then too, that also could describe a number of Japanese citizens that I've interacted with at work when talking to people working for the local branches of Japanese HQ-ed multinational corporations; as well as those with Chinese or Korean roots. --- I think Asterisk is going to start getting into more fighting soon now that the Festa is coming up.

Otherwise, how the heck do you know what people are talking about? What do you do if you just want to discuss one or a couple specific animes? You tend to remember all the character(or at least the description of the character) and title of the show as well as almost all episodes you have seen. So what happens is that if somebody talks about certain character or anime , you just bump the discussion if you have seen it before and just use spoiler tags. All good. If you don't recognize who the hell they are talking about or what anime is that you ignore it and dodge opening the spoilers. Even if you do you usually don't understand or will know the context of it anyways.
