Actually, Ga Rei Zero was really well done, and is definitely worth a look. I thought the manga was crap though (although I only read a tiny bit).
And apparently I'm the only one who though Ergo Proxy was pretentious rubbish hiding behind pretty art :/
Um, from the past 3 years, I'd try Baccano or something. Maybe Kara no Kyoukai as well, I dunno.
Edit- and yes, I am aware of the ridiculousness of calling Ergo Proxy needlessly pretentious and then recommending Kara no Kyoukai, which is like the definition of an unnecessarily pretentious show.

Saw it, it was pretty decent, not as good though. Planetes isnt much of a space opera, rather a hard sci fi set in the near future. I have a hard on for hard sci fi, and planetes was pretty awesome in that regard, the realism and the amount of research put into it, and the issues presented in it were of incredible depth for an anime. I watched the anime twice( on my 3rd run now), and the manga I read a couple of times. I enjoy it a lot, thanks for the recommendation though, which reminded me, I wanted to look into the legend of the galactic heroes which is another space opera. Alright, when I saw that you were willing to put up with Ergo Proxy I didn't particularly figure you'd care about how hard the basis was. I personally enjoyed Crest more than I did Planetes, but I also have more of a thing for the issues presented in Crest rather than what Planetes had.
Actually, Triangle, I think Ergo Proxy and Eva are both pretentious rubbish hiding behind pretty art, but I am obviously biased, look at how much I root for rakkyo.
Ga-rei Zero was better after you get over the first couple episodes of derf-what-is-happening.

first episode of Ga-Rei Zero was so ;_;

Oddly, I love Planetes and H+C, but I despised Ergo Proxy. So you've got a 50-50 on your hands for that one.
If you've not seen it, you must watch Mushishi. Noein is another forgotten gem.
Hmm, what else...
Genshiken is like a light-hearted version of H+C (you won't shed any tears).
March Lion (3gatsu no Lion) is Umino Chika's newest manga series (she wrote H+C).
And, of course, obligatory Kara no Kyoukai mention.

OMG yes, Eva is the other show I have major issues with.
And I liked the WTF-tastic opening to Ga Rei Zero, but I can see why a lot of people wouldn't. + Show Spoiler [Ga Rei ep 1.] +Nooooo motorcycle chick T_T If you want a show like Ergo Proxy, I'd recommend Ghost in the Shell, which imo pulls off the pretentiousness mixed with action formula a lot better.
Since we seem to have wandered away from the past 3 years thing, I'll toss out my obligatory watch Haibane Renmei.
As was mentioned above, Mushishi is excellent.

It's all Seinen, of course.

Thanks guys. The recommendations were great. I watched/read Berserk, Mushishi, Haibane Renmi, Genshiken, and Sanctuary, and I loved pretty much all of those series a great deal. So I guess I will have a look at Shin Angyo Onshi, March Lion, and Kara no Kyoukai.
I find it hilarious that Luccumo mentioned that sanctuary had nudity, after mentioning berserk .

I would love to recommend manga to you (as I read way too many of them) but I read them raw and manga tends to be more unpredictable when it comes to knowing what's been scanslated or not >_< Sorry.

Since Berserk is widely known and Sanctuary is not(for whatever reason), I decided to add this so that you know what to expect ;-)

Agreed. If you loved H&C and Planetes and Mushishi, I probably have a similar taste. So go ahead and recommend stuff ^__^.

My tastes are pretty everywhere, but stuff I follow/liked off the top of my head...
07Ghost Black Lagoon Break Blade <-- previous work RAMPAGE is terribad Gunslinger Girl Jormungaand (would also recommend Ordinary +- by the same author) Landreaall (not scanslated I think, because I tried to translate but I couldn't secure scanner + editor T_T) <-- would also recommend Avian Wander by the same author <3 Ogaki Chika Vagabond Saki <-- her previous work FATALIZER is pretty crappy Yotsubato Wolf Guy (crest) <-- would also recommend Akumetsu Yubisaki Milk Tea Pandora Heart <-- have not kept up with, though, because it's hard as balls finding raws Hoshi ha Utau <-- same as Pandora :| She also wrote Fruits Basket, which is a lot darker than the anime, I'm not sure I recommend it though because it is EMOTASTIC (overly so) Pure Maple Pancake Kirameki Gingachou Shoutengai ARIA <-- didn't watch the anime, though, so if you watched/disliked the anime I'd stay away I think Houshin Engi <-- current work is Shiki, which is about to be animated Kamisama Dolls <-- I'd recommend pretty much everything but this author, but he's got a tendency to have 70% satisfactory endings, so to speak Blade of the Immortal Sing Yesterday For Me <-- recommend everything by Toume Kei, except for maybe Kurogane Ubel Blatt <-- on hiatus though, I think the mangaka got sick or something ~_~ LIFE
With regards to magazines I think Zero-Sum, Afternoon, and Blade? are the ones that I tend to pick stuff out of the most. Afternoon was also the home to Mushishi and Genshiken.
Edit: Also there're some smaller/obscure stuff that're really hard to remember, so sorry. Like Planetes, is good, but it's 4 volumes and obscure, and when making a list of good manga I really doubt I'd have remembered it. That sort of stuff ;; Or rather, it seems I tend to forget things that are completed. As most of those are ongoing works.
Edit2: Speaking of shorts, the manga based on Otsu Ichi's novels, which aren't THAT GREAT but are interesting, are worth checking up on if anyone's t/l'd them. GOTH, Shissou Holiday, and one I forget about an invisible cell phone. The manga version of NHK ni Youkoso is RATHER different from the anime and novel, as it's a lot more batshit insane, so that might be something you could leaf through if curious. Dunno if I could actually call it good, though.
CLAMP stuff tend to also be nice. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles just ended, xxxholic is still ongoing, RG Veda was great and is a classic, and we can always hope X/1999 gets completed one day.
Edit4: Piling on and on and on... BLAME! and NOISE are pretty interesting cyberpunk, as was, I believe, Biomega (which was based off of BLAME!). I have not been keeping up with his most recent ongoing work, the Knight of Sidonis or something, although the first chapter was kinda cool. Tsutomu Takahashi's stuff are always fascinating. Alive, Bakuon Rettou, Skyhigh (and Karma), Blue Heaven, Jiraishin, and now SIDOOH.
Basilisk and Yagyuu Ninja Scrolls (both same mangaka and novel author) are interesting reads. Basilisk was turned into an anime some years ago, and faithfully followed the manga.
Urasawa Naoki, of Monster and 20th Century Boys fame, also churns out good reads.
The Silent Service was an interesting political/social manga.
Oh sh- I just found out the mangaka for Mushishi has a new series running in Afternoon. Must... find...

Ga-Rei Zero is great if you can get to like the third episode. The first one is just wtf garbage. The manga is crap.
Shikabane Hime is complete crap.

Thank you a lot for making this list. I will definitely look at some of this stuff. I read/watched a few of the stuff your recommended, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest. I appreciate it. .
