It's pretty much a line for line adaption of the manga so if you liked that you'll probably like the anime (the animation is good enough and the music in it is pretty catchy, espc the OPs). It's kind of in development hell right now though with the story being continued in OVA episodes but I'm pretty sure I read there's going to be a Season 3.

An anime doesn't have to be a "masterpiece" to be enjoyable, nor do you have to watch such shows all the time. Whats wrong with Chuu2? You mean other than all the annoying characters and lack of plot? And the only "redeemable" qualiy about it being KyoAni moe (if you can even classify that as a redeeming quality)? Sure, it isn't pure garbage like Lucky Star or K-On, but there should be a million anime to watch before Chuu2. That wasn't my point anyway, and it's just like, your opinion etc. Though saying the characters are annoying is entirely subjective, and there is a plot. Indeed, it is my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong, but asking "What's wrong with Chuu2?" is a question asking for other people's opinion on 'what's wrong with it'. In the case you were being rhetorical (which is entirely possible, I guess), and stating that there isn't anything wrong with it (lol), then that's just like, your opinion etc. Read my post again (and the posts before if you don't see what I was getting at), I did not write "what's wrong with Chuu2?". If the guy enjoys watching it (and I assume he does because he could have dropped it otherwise), why should he not watch it even if there OBVIOUSLY are better shows which he might not have watched yet? "What's wrong with Chuu2" and "What's wrong with watching Chuu2" are pretty much the same question, imo. It's not, especially in this context. There are many anime with issues, in fact most of them. They can still be worth watching for some people (this might shock you, but some people have different views on quality of shows, different preferences and different taste than you). Unless you're also trying to say that one should only watch the very best anime has to offer. Are you being serious? Asking whats wrong with watching Chuu2 is the same thing as asking what its flaws are, since... Chuu2 is whats being watched, lol. If something isn't worth watching, its because there is something horribly wrong with it. So maybe in the future, if you don't actually want to know whats wrong with watching something, which is the same thing as asking why that something is not worth watching, which is the same thing as asking what its flaws are, maybe you should ask a better question. Btw, thanks for the Captain Obvious stuff like "most anime has issues" and "people have different preferences and tastes than me", though. You're welcome.

That the study of aesthetics exists? That discussion of any form over any form of art exists? Even if it's all meaningless and reducible to "mere" opinion that should just be disregarded, human culture over hundreds of years has demanded and perpetuated it. So it's fine to watch whatever you want to watch. It's fine to not even discuss it or to have no reasons for it. But if you're gonna pretend to discuss something, try to actually say something more about it than just "Well it's not the best, but it has worth." That statement is true for innumerable topics, and says nothing specifically about the show in question. I'm not sure what you are trying to get at, because I have not said anything about the value of criticism or discussion, nor was it my intention to discuss Chuu2 in the first place (and I didn't "pretend" so either). Again, the initial post by Ferrose didn't ask for recommendations, opinions on Chuu2, comparisons of Chuu2 with other anime, implied he doesn't have time to watch it and would rather watch something else etc., hence I don't see a reason to state something like "There are plenty of other, better anime you can spend your time watching".

I don't find it problematic. It tends to create obnoxious anime "fans" who think they know everything about anime because they watched two dozen widely acclaimed shows, complain about moe without knowing what it means, say anime is shit nowadays, think they have taste even though they lack experience and exposure and just watched stuff that was critically acclaimed, have misconceptions and prejudices about genres and demographics, act condescending towards people who disagree with their narrow mind and so on.

Does your list include people who make obnoxious anime fans who make run-on paragraphs?
That said that argument was getting kind of silly, bashing Ferrose because his taste is eh is one thing, wasting a couple of paragraphs on why he shouldn't watch a moe show is another. Let's just settle it at Ferrose hangs around here enough to know that what echo and sent mean is to not waste time watching chuu2. Next time just tell him on irc and save some time. If you still want to cry about people being snobby with their tastes and comments go right ahead. You just won't get anywhere arguing about it. The guy a few dozen pages back arguing that k-on is a great anime for him is more convincing at the matter than you are though.

There was a 5 page chapter a couple months ago, there was like a 400 reply thread on /a/ complaining about it. Shit went into auto-sage after like 45 minutes.

Nevermind the detail, the sheer speed with which he draws is ridiculous. I know there's a couple videos out there of Kaoru Mori (of Otoyomegatari fame) drawing stuff, and they're equally impressive.

Whoa, thanks for sharing that. Watching him draw is super interesting, he's so good and it looks super awesome :O

Finished Rewrite. Finished Shikkoku no Sharnoth. No real spoilers below although some impressions might spoil something if you know what I think about certain things(probably don't).
Shikkoku no Sharnoth: 8.5/10. Loved the main character, but the story was too short and became really weird after a certain point. It had pretty good horror / mystery and suspense elements and some heartwarming scenes. No real actually funny comedy which is a minus because it makes some daily life scenes a bit boring. Music had sort of a Tsukihime-syndrome with too few tracks, though they were decent. Art was strange but not exactly bad. Still pretty weird. The steampunk setting was really good and interesting. The minigame also was REALLY annoying. It was way too distracting and I ended up disabling it. It was beatable but 30 minutes of pretty much grinding just wasn't that fun for me(main character's turn start voice acting almost made it worthwhile, though).
As it's not that long, recommended if interested in a good female main character(way too rare) and a steampunk mystery/suspense story. Probably won't change your world though.
Rewrite: 10/10
Good art and graphics, really nice photoshopping in some CGs. The second OP is super well done, beats most anime OPs. The music was good. The general level was solid, even though it wasn't on the level of the best OSTs like Muv-Luv Alternative, Fate / Stay Night Realta Nua and such. Still, it had a few really good tracks and might have a few that I'll listen to by themselves in the future.
The story and the setting were really good. The characters also were wonderful. Every single character was superb and had wonderful development, even ones who were of the character types I generally hated. Even the side characters were great and the comedy all around was excellent, perhaps the best I've thus far encountered in a VN. I could even recommend this just for the comedy. It's balanced really well with the drama that also was very powerful. The ending also surprised me positively, which is extremely rare with such a good setting. Usually it's not carried out properly and makes me angry at them for wasting opportunities. for better stories. The environmentalism was also interesting and quite unique, I haven't seen many other VNs concentrate so much on preservation of nature and other related things. Reading this will probably raise ones awareness for those things.
The "achievement" system in the form of Friends and Quests was a nice idea, and that gave it some replayability value. Even the parts completely unrelated to the overall plot had good humor that made them quite worthwhile. The bonus ending that you unlocked by collecting everything was mostly hilarious and I felt that it was worth collecting everything. The mappie minigame segments were quite annoying, especially as you needed to search through them to finish everything and so you couldn't even autoskip them. It's a minus. The only other minus I can think of is the fact that it takes a while before the story really gets going. Still, it's so hilarious that that's not even such a bad thing.
Recommended for everyone with time to spare. It should have something for fans of almost every genre. Still, it took me around 2 weeks to finish and I did read it like 6-10 hours every day so it lasted forever. Every character has a unique story so even after you finish it for the first time you have much, much more left to look forward to. This combined with the achievement/collectable system gives this game a lot of replay value, more than most other VNs. It's a 10/10 even though I'm trying to reduce the amount of tens I give out because it just is that good. I'd say that the only other 10/10 I'd currently give would be to Ever 17. 9.5s would be to Steins;Gate, Muv-Luv Alternative, Fate/Stay Night.
Started Umineko no Naku Koro ni PS3 art/voice mod.
First of all, all the characters are gorgeous. The default art is so fugly(just like in Higurashi no naku koro ni) that it was really tough starting this. However, with this art it's a real pleasure even with the low resolution. The sound track is very good and some of the tracks are top-notch. Note I'm rating the art a bit too highly because I compare to the original Umineko, it's still not at the level of Rewrite art for example. The voice actors also have been mostly brilliant. In the anime people complained about Maria being annoying but I've really liked her in the VN(haven't seen anime). Maybe the voice actor was different? As she's done a wonderful job for Maria here. Thus far I'm already in the 4th episode and so far it's been way better than Higurashi no naku koro ni(even though I haven't yet finished it). I can highly recommend this already to anyone who likes mystery / thriller / horror / suspense, and even to others because it has a mix of other genres as well. The significantly better art and the voice acting really really help this game, I wouldn't be surprised if I rate this a 10/10 as well if the ending is good.

Default sprites > PS3 sprites. Easily. While the PS3 sprites are definitely prettier, PC original sprites are that much better when it comes to being a part of the whole package.
A lot of people hate on Sharnoth, which is understandable. If I I didn't like that whole Monte Cristo theme I wouldn't have enjoyed the game as much on its own. Also lucky that I played it before I found out about Inganock I suppose. Anyhow, the game is basically Sakurai's first real stab into making the Steampunk series a series. It expands a lot more about the world and connects the setting that was made in the previous two games. But as a standalone game it is rather lacking, it really wasn't until the webnovels were thrown up that the story felt like it was rounded up. Fortunately though Amaterasu also translated those iirc.
Also after Valusia I can take anything from Liarsoft...says the one who is reading Gakutun at a snail's pace.
|
Yeah I'll finish Inganock after Umineko. I've just read it for a few hours but it already feels more hmm... immersive. I'll probably write a little more about them after I finish both.
Amaterasu should apparently be translating 2 newer VNs of the Steampunk series. Ixrec is currently the most consistent and the fastest translator around, but it still seems like it's going to take a while until that's done. Still, it's not too bad because I'm really looking forward to their very next project.
I really can't agree with PS3 sprites being inferior though, they fit the characters so well. Especially Battler looks a million billion times better, with his original sprite i felt like punching him through the monitor.
|
Eh. PS3 sprites look pretty but are also generic as shit. That isn't a problem in itself, but the PC sprites are amazing in how hideous they are and how well they fit in in spite of it. Being easier on the eyes at first glance really isn't what is needed for sprites for ADV games. Being able to transmit what needs to be seen and felt is. The PS3 sprites just don't have the same level of impact and all we get back from it is a generic anime look. Not worth it at all.
Kaal mentioned at some point that Amaterasu is going to be doing the steampunk games in order or something so it'll be forever before sonanyl gets pushed out. If people didn't like Sharnoth, I can't wait to see how much hate Valusia will get.
