Plus guns>swords. yea I always felt like Ga Rei (the manga) atleast was really run of the mill shonenesque (which isnt a bad thing it was nice), anime would probably have been similar if it hadnt been for the angst and the Yuri, which is significantly tempered later on. Id take Black Lagoon over that for an action show anyday (yea ok the Roberta arc is a bit farcical) but for the most part with all the other faults it might have I certainly wouldnt call the characters not interesting. lol the manga and the anime are NOTHING alike at all, other than technically sharing some characters. I guess later on (after the anime had aired) the manga started to get up to the anime's quality, but it was pretty much too late by that time. Ga Rei Zero is definitely one of the best anime that has been recommended to the guy who refused to look at the recommendation chart at the top of the page due to laziness, however.

Well I read the manga wayy before watching the show, mostly because when I looked at the show and saw it was a prequel I kept putting it off and reading the manga.
I dont know how much different it is to be honest, the anime's a bit darker than the manga initially was and provides backstory (obviously) and thanks to the goofball mc they add in the manga the start was completely "lol another shounen manga". The personalities changed from zero aswell even though they were shared, but they tend to come around and zero (pun intended) in back to the way it was in the anime to a great extent. Like I said it was just the manga that felt shonenesque its a good show for alot more than the action. Black lagoon is considerably higher tempo so if I want an action show id pick it over Ga Rei.

I remember a time when I could barely manage to fit all the anime I wanted to watch into a day. Hikaru no Go was airing and I had just found Hunter x Hunter. These days I might watch a random episode a week but it has been YEARS since I have been excited about a new anime. I keep looking but there seems to be millions of awful harem/tedious school nonsense animes on top of bleach/naruto/random shonen jump clones everywhere (when the originals can barely hold it together). I hope this changes soon.

It would be weird because the artist drawing it is usually not official. That and I think it's the voice actors too, they are often the ones that make the characters that awesome.
