I'm in love with the serie =). In that world incest is a crime in the eyes of men and Gods (in their own words). So both the Church and the King would kill them if they found out (well the King would get them first :D)

This house ruled the kingdoms for 300 years until Robert (the fat king) killed most of them and took the throne.

Re: Rome being cancelled. HBO has since said they regret canceling Rome. When the BBC dropped their financial support for the show they panicked, but in retrospect they said with DVD and blu ray sales the show was much more profitable than expected. Early reviews and support for Game of Thrones is extremely high, and season 2 should be announced very soon.
HBO’s foray into the fantasy world of George R. R Martin is paying off for the premium cable network. Game of Thrones (which premieres in the US on April 17th) has already become HBO’s best selling series abroad… ever. At 2.5 million dollars an episode, Game of Thrones sells for almost 50% more than an episode of The Sopranos.
So as the following article explains, they are already making tons of money off the show internationally before considering DVD, blu ray, netflix, ect which will come after the season ends.

They were the exception.

The Targaryens traditionally married brother to sister, but they also had a strong tradition of being bat-shit crazy.

All right, just finished watching it. And I LIKE it, I really do. I think the friend I was hyping this up to will also like it (Spartacus and Rome series fan), but my sister will not. Not something I'd recommend to my mom, either . Great performances from the actors, especially the Lannisters and Ned. Arya and Bran are endearing, Joffrey is a smug little ass even though he hasn't said a word, and Jon is the right emo-level. The opening intro was worth the hype- if extra seasons are ordered, it will be great to see the different cities and strongholds of the Seven Kingdoms (and beyond) having their own little animations (Harrenhal!) Can't wait to see the drama in the next episode!
(spoiler for book events) + Show Spoiler +It's only the first episode and I know I'm going to be absolutely crushed at the end of this season's last epsiode. Crushed, I tell you! Sansa's friend (Jeyne Poole) REALLY looked like Arya, I actually thought it was the two of them giggling together at the feast. If the series continues and the Boltons will present her as the fake Arya later on, she'll be very believable.

Yup. I believe because they have sex as siblings it would show the queen’s infidelity, deceptiveness, and subterfuge, which would support the information Lady Stark received in a message from her sister, prompting a extermination of all the Lanisters

You should also mention that there are two religions one based on the Old Gods and one based on the New Gods, which each have their own sets of traditions and interpretations of sexuality and social norms. I mean take a look at how they handle thing across the Wall, where they still worship the Old Gods. My understanding was that the religion and beliefs of the Tagaryen House made it acceptable for Incest because it kept their blood pure. So incest is iffy across the continent much like it was in the renaissance, and medieval times. In fact the King’s Speech is about the King who had a lisp that was most likely brought on by a lack of genetic diversity, and same goes for similar issues with the former members of royalty in Spain and France.

I believe it is because they supposedly had the "blood of the dragon", so they didn't want to dilute the blood.
Also the Targaryens were overthrown because the king was insane (probably a result of many years of incest) and issued certain orders that some lords just could not abide.
Incest is probably especially looked down upon since the realm suffered under the mad king.

I believe they will do some exposition on the religions in future episodes, right now they are not really critical for the immediate story, they tend to become more important in the later books. It really would have been too much to try cram that all that explanation into the pilot, I think it would be already somewhat confusing to someone who hasn't read the books.

Just wanna add that she bathed in scalding hot water because she is a descendant of House Targaryen - house of the dragons. She likes heat as dragons create heat (spit fire), and for her the hot water gives her power.

Being a long time fan I am a bit unsure how to look a this, Martins has kept all major plotlines in the serial which is of course good because his die hard fans would spew fire if something was omitted, but for people not familiar with his books, is it not too overwhelming, what do you say?

She has not special powers or magic, + Show Spoiler +except being one of the main chars and things working out for here better then for most of the other chars (main or otherwise). But she thinks she is resistant to fire and heat. Her resisting hot water might be due to her state of mind at that moment as well as water not being THAT hot.

It doesn't really give her power, but + Show Spoiler +it does foreshadow what happens at the end of the book with the fire

The Targaryens arent exactly the most rational when it comes to very hot things. One of the previous kings died cause he thought he could drink what would afaik be molten lava(wildfire).

I'm off now, to say ten holy marys, and pray for the damned souls of the creators of this blasphemous show.
not sure why. i feel like a good majority of the books was spent in whore houses and plentyof rape

Lack of genetic diversity in the European royal houses was brought about by inbreeding, though, not by direct incest. Marrying cousins or second cousins is not considered incest in most places, and is not generally dangerous, but it will still show if you continue to do it a few generations down without bringing in any new genetic material.

I always considered wildfire to be closer to Greek Fire than lava.
