If true, anyone with cable will be able to check out the first episode at least. I am afraid that this might be true and i will get hooked while at school and not be able to watch any more after that weekend. Ill have to do my best to find it online somewhere!

I will download it and without a doubt get the DVD box series, just like how i bought all the books after having read most of them via the library. Still i wish i could have HBO just to watch it live, bump the ratings and show my support for what is in my opinion the greaters producers of film at this point in time.

I'd add that Tolkien's devout Christian / pro-Western perspective may be partially personal bias, but it's primarily in service of his goal to create a uniquely English mythology. The Norman Invasion and its disastrous effects on English culture and civilization weighed on his mind, and Tolkien wanted future generations to have the mythologies that other cultures had enjoyed for centuries. That was also a goal for CS Lewis and his Narnia books, though those are more explicitly allegorical than mythological (and far less successful, if you ask me). On the other hand, Martin is a great writer, but his world is purely postmodern and is as cynical as any noir fiction--he's not trying to create mythology that will endure for centuries any more than David Chase was with the Sopranos. Comparing his work to Tolkien's is like pitting High Noon against Unforgiven--same genre, different aims. Seemed to have overlooked this reply, very informative and that analogy is perfect. Wasn't aware that creating a 'uniquely' Ennglish mythology was one of Tolkien's goals. Its always interesting I think to see the effect of bias, tradition, history etc on one's writings.

http://www.ology.com/technology/5-observations-early-game-thrones-episodes And a negative one: http://blogs.indiewire.com/carynjames/archives/gameofthrones/ So far the only negative reviews have been from people who basicly auto failed it because it is in the fantasy genre. Most of their reasons are pretty hollow too, but even the best reviewed material is going to have a few people who hate it.

I mean to have such a major actor play a character that dies in the first book of the series leads me to believe that the story has been tampered with. I am sure he doesn’t want to be cut out of another series like he was in Lord of The Rings, especially when he is like the only big name in the series.

I considered it finished when you asked met to concede that my penis is smaller then yours. There are things i cannot do. If anyone is a purist, I would suggest you not even watch this series. The fact that they casted Sean Bean as Ned Stark most likely means the produce and director made changes in the name of artistic licensing. No, that is utterly impossible. + Show Spoiler + The death of Ned Stark is not something that can be ignored, it is crucial to the rest of the story. If Ned gets sent to the wall for example then the war of the five kings never happens.

I am sure he doesn’t want to be cut out of another series like he was in Lord of The Rings, especially when he is like the only big name in the series. They aren't changing that plot point. Certainly the show isn't going to be a line for line translation of the book with no changes at all, as the first 14 minutes already shows, but the main events will all be there. Here is an early review from Westros.org, which documents the details in the books as closely as anyone outside of Martin himself: http://www.westeros.org/GoT/Features/Entry/4985/ They discuss what has been cut out and say while they miss some of the details, they love it as a whole. Some fans will let the smallest of changes ruin it for them, but it's silly not to watch first and find out before making such statements. Besides + Show Spoiler + Sean Bean just announced he signed for another TV show for next year: http://www.businessinsider.com/sean-bean-to-co-star-in-abc-series-missing-3-others-book-pilots-2011-4

Each book is about as long as the whole LOTR, and it took three long films with a high budget to do LOTR in a decent way. I retract that statement from page 1. They seem to really put in effort and money to make it a faithful adaption of the books. Looking forward to it, since I prefer the asoiaf story/characters of LOTR by far. I won't complain about small changes as long as the spirit is preserved and it's generally well made.
