I just came to this thread to post that link but you beat me to it. So much hype for this show. There aren't very many shows that they release sneak previews for, at least I've never watched a sneak preview quite like this before.

The show bows Stateside April 17 and on U.K. pay TV web Sky Atlantic the day after. It's been acquired in Germany (TNT), France (Orange and Canal Plus), Belgium (Telenet), Canada (Astra and Corus), Australia (Showtime), Scandinavia (Canal Plus) and South Africa (MNet) with deals for Japan, Italy and Russia in the pipeline.

Currently there are 4 books available, with the 5th coming out soon(GRRM promises, lol). No idea how many seasons they'll create, I guess that depends on the success. Mapping the 4th and 5th book to a season each might be a bad idea though, since they're split by characters and not by time. So I wouldn't be surprised if their content gets rearranged.

HBO doesn't need a show to be a massive viewer succes, they only need the ammount of subscribers to remain the same (or ideally go up). The HBO show "The Wire" for example (imo best TV series ever made) never really did well on the ratings but it achieved a critic lovefest. Those kinds of shows help HBO bump up their image to being the #1 quality provider in TV content, the network any self respecting film buff wants to have on their TV. Ofcourse if a show really draws abyssmal viewer ratings then a should could get canned because it might be too expensive too produce. Mainly costume shows are like that, for example Rome and Deadwood wich cost a big buck to produce. HBO however did say they greatly regret having cancelled Rome, a show that didn't have a really big following, was expensive, but did have a reasonable core or fans wich really sent out the signal that HBO had cut the show a little too soon. In terms of production costs Game of Thrones is a likely candidate to get cut if it really does horribly on the ratings but at the same time ratings don't decide everything over at HBO. The whole thing gets more complex when you think about single-viewers and HBO-fans. Imagine that Game of Thrones draws in 4 million viewers every week. Let's say another HBO show draws in 7 million every week. It's not just a math story of wich show has more viewers, it's important to understand the mindset of the audience. For example how many of those 4 million GoT viewers are really die-hard about the show? How many of them have HBO just to watch GoT? If the GoT audience is largely composed of people that only watch HBO to get GoT then it's actually less likely to be cancelled then shows with a bigger audience that might be composed of HBO fans in general that just enjoy the channel itself and watch a lot of stuff on HBO. I actually think GoT will draw in a lot of viewers who will get HBO for mostly that show and this places it in a far more fortunate position because cancelling the show might cost them all the subscribers that are only there for GoT. In the end it's never going to be certain how it will work out but given what i have seen the only reason i feel that it could fail is because people might have a knee-jerk reaction when hearing that it's fantasy. I still believe a 2nd season is almost a guarentee considering the start-up costs for a series like this are huge so they would probably atleast run a 2nd season to see if it really doesn't work out for them.

Also, I think its a strong possibility that if the show is successful, the creators will choose to split SoS and FFC/ADwD into 2 and 3 seasons respectively. It would give grrm more time to write 6 and 7 as well.

Whilst it's acceptable for a book to split characters up, the show can't suddenly exclude half the cast in a season and then the other half in the next season. GoT could be pretty much 1:1 translated to screen but FFC and ADwD form 1 big book together so those two might have to be reduced into a single season.

The last interview I read Martin hoped that if the ratings support it, clash of kings would go up to 12 episodes from 10 since it is a longer book, and Storm of Swords would be split into 2 seasons. Feast and Dance would make up another 3-4 seasons, but the books stories would be merged since they are happening at the same time. Dance is supposed to be longer than Storm of Swords.
