Keep it real, no bubblegum!
Good shit man, really digging this guy. I really wish i could find a somewhere to get his albums by...well lets just say frugal means
yeah i largely agree with you guys about MCHG. def not his best, but it wasnt terrible.
very good production/overall sound direction/features, but jay z had a lot of verses that weren't that good. It's definitely not an album that you listen to once and forget about, but it's not a classic.

for his 12th album its not bad.
I can't get over him trying to posture himself as being anti-establishment when he is basically the Wal-mart of Hip-Hop. Jay-Z is basically the guy that tells other artists that they can't put shit on their records cause it isn't radio friendly enough. It's a joke. He sold a million copies to Samsung to make some spyware app and then talks on and on about how he needs to write the new rules for the internet like he's the king of the youth? MCHG is pathetic.

i havent listened to it enough to comment on that (what he talks about) :p. for me, i enjoy it aesthetically, and on the surface. but his subject matter either hasn't caught my attention enough or is negligible.
That's really cool DoctorHelvetica, I'm glad they mentioned his storytelling ability in the end. I think Kendrick's story telling is what really sets him apart, his flow is great but there are so few rappers that paint/painted a picture as well as he does.
And I'm inspired to listen through GKMC for the 8 millionth time now.
edit: And as I go through it I have to say that Jay Rock's verse on Money Trees is so sick, he's my least favourite member of Black Hippy but I guess he knew he had to up his game for Kendrick's album.
I am going to have to listen to some of his work. I have not really heard much of him. I am not one to usually listen to rap. But from time to time a rap song does catch my attention. There has been some good music shared in this thread. I do like hip hop a little as well. I do not like music about violence but do like music that tells stories that are really about real life.
Here's a playlist of Kendrick with a different song I picked to show off each of his many many many strengths:
1. Breath Control
2. Storytelling Ability
3. Smoothness
(i also nominate P&P 1.5)
4. Technical Rap/Freestyle
My top 3 favorite Kendrick tracks tho are mAAd City, Cartoon and Cereal and maybe Hol'up or The Recipe. He's been dope for a long time, even when he was a young'un in TDE and hadn't quite come into his own he's technically/lyrically on point:
It's also funny as hell to see Schoolboy Q so skinny
Yesterday I saw KRS One live. It was pretty good, better than I had expected to be honest. I'm not that big of a KRS One fan, but when the concert is so close to where you live that you can walk there in 3 minutes you just fucking go there. The Mobb Deep (Havoc) concert was better tho, even tho Prodigy's probationer doesn't allow him to travel Europe. That's why they cancelled the entire Europe tour, but Havoc still came to Vienna, because I think we were to first to see them. He totally made up for it, there were no regrets after that concert. In fact, you were almost glad Prodigy didn't show up, because just Havoc alone was already so incredibly good I think both of 'em would have literally blown my mind. Can't wait to see Kendrick live.
That said, .22 slug to your head. I wrote a battle rap the day I got banned. Just for the hell of it cuz I was bored, no hard feelings here. I'll post it when the page clears, because people still think it's a good idea to spam 50 videos per post.

I think it's cuz anti-establishment is what's mainstream right now; he's just trying to tap into the zeitgeist.
That was a good review on whoever posted that on Kendrick Lamar. MAAD City is the first modern hip-hop album I have listened to in probably 4/5 years. Really good.
Actually, I lie(!), I heard the new Kanye one a few times about 3 weeks ago to come and post about it on here but I lost my post and then gave it up. But the album sounded like a cross between Daft Punk's Homework and Portishead to me (I like both groups, and I know Kanye does too). I enjoyed most of it, even if his lyrics left a lot to be desired. If this is a one of a kind album of his --as in he never makes another album like this one again-- I think it might be regarded as better.
And I realize I posted the wrong song a few pages ago when I was trying to show Thes One NY-influenced production. 'The Breakdown' at first sounds like an Illmatic song but this beat can seriously bring a tear to my eye. + Show Spoiler +
I def always feel it down my spine =P...They don't have progressive lyrics, so if you are into lyrics more than anything, they might not be for you. But if you are a beatsmith into old-school (non-computer), jazzy, soul, and funk samples and detailed production, then dam this guys are sick, specially on O.S.T - 2002 (one of my fav albums). Sort of like a newer A Tribe Called Quest or Pharcyde in that sense; they might have one the biggest vinyl collections in LA.
edit:I'm a bangerr, the kind you keep in your disc changer...(haha)
Just finally checked out Kendrick since he's been so hyped and holy shit I dont think I've ever been more disappointed musically. Admittedly I got off to a bad start with Maad City and Backseat Freestyle (?) which I didn't like at all but the next few were better. Still, it's not for me.
