Yay, another GGK fan! I haven't ordered it yet. How would you rate it so far amongst his other books?

Another work on the same field that's also very interesting is On Crimes and Punishments, by Cesare Beccaria. It's a 18th century book with very humanitarian views(The author condemns excessive punishment). I recommend it if you're interested in the subject. I've heard a lot about Beccaria, though I'm not sure I'm interested enough in the subject to read it. Foucault quotes him at length too. Finished Discipline and Punish, pretty easy and clear read (well after Kant I guess most things are^^), and it's certainly excellent food for thought, even though I think Foucault's conclusion are a bit too strong. And now...

I finished this book around a week ago. It is a very short read with the font being relatively large and the pages being small. I read Manuscript Found in Accra straight in a 2 hour session, and I think the book is meant to be read that way. The reason being, the book handles about some moral issues and the way in which we should adapt our way of thinking to certain situations to prevent depressed thoughts and self-worthlessness. The book concisely touches upon these issues and I'm sure that Paulo Coelho could have expanded a bit upon what he had written.
The book was originally written in Portuguese by the author and then later translated to English by Margaret Jull Costa. I recommend this book for any Paulo Coelho fan, especially if you enjoyed The Alchemist.

For some reason I'm biased against Under Heaven, just the names and whatnot felt weird, but I feel much more used to it now. There's a very big sense of impending doom in this one though, and I think it evokes the relationship between Lions and The Sarantine Mosaic... That sense of a golden age past now lost to a more savage world.
I find it really, really hard to compare Kay's books. My favourite are Lions and The Sarantine Mosaic, but I think I like this better so far than A Song for Arbonne and The Last Light of the Sun. But they're all great books anyway.

Your tastes seem to run in the same direction as my own. My favorites are the same as yours (Lions + Sarantine duology), and I have the same dislike of Under Heaven, so perhaps this bodes well ... I haven't been too fond of Kay's later novels; his recent shift in storytelling (i.e. he's basically gone from writing histories driven by characters towards writing characters driven by history) has left kind of a bitter taste in my mouth, so I've been pessimistic about River of Stars, but what you've said gives me some hope!

Right now reading Lolita. I was going to start The Sound and the Fury but so many positive reviews of Lolita on this thread made me go for it first.

I was curious about what happened to the book club idea that Fav had. If he's not interested I'm sure someone else could start one up as it would be a great idea. I would be willing to lead one but I doubt my choices would be as "high fiction" as his seemed to be.

Worry not! I'll have a thread up by Friday, I've been cooking up some ideas (thanks to Babylon for some inspiration). I hope to have a good 4-7 or so books of wide variety for folks to choose from with which we can craft a sort of "theme" around, with supplementary essays, some historical reference, stuff like that.

First Law Trilogy was soooooo gooooood. I enjoyed those books so much. The Name of the Wind is one of my favorite books as well. Get ready for the heart wrenching anger once you finish the second book because the third fucking book is still not out which pisses me off at least once a week.
On to my own reading. I am about halfway through The Master and Margarita and so far it is fantastic one of the best books I have read in a while its so funny.

I wouldn't recommend Paulo Coelho to anyone. Just saying.

I would get pretty annoyed answering when the next book would arrive when I had no idea myself as a writer... I give them slack.... =)

Name of the Wind is one of my favorite books of all time and I also have the Blade Itself sitting on my table just waiting for me to read it.
