Definitely won't win any Oscars. Liked the style, but there was bad plot, bad acting, and silly humour. The Japanese chick grew on me.
To be clear, I just saw the movie and I think everyone involved with making it wouldn't disagree that the movie was dumb. They just didn't give it shit and wanted to make is awesome.
It was dumb is an way that action movies should be. The whole movie is based on the idea "Hey, this shit is awesome, what this!". The movie is so knowingly stupid that the audience cheered out loud when it happens and loves the movie for it. Even the acting is kinda terrible in an awesome way, like the writers were like "Ok, so what if he said "Engage the rocket elbow!". There are cheesy lines, people avenge their families with giant robot swords in fucking space and the cancel the apocalypse.
I only watched it because some of my friends were an didn't expect to enjoy it. It took me about 15-20minutes in for me to settle in and trust the moviemakers, but I came out actually enjoying it. I probably won't end up buying it in the bargain bin (penultimate sign of my enjoyment) but I did enjoy it.
There's basically a mine of story ideas in this movie as this moves at a rapid pace. (Seriously, that opening monologue had the makings of it's own movie.) There's a lot of directions they could have gone with this, but the film knew what it was and delivered without trying to get all philosophical.
My one minor complaint is this:

Chinese Trio and Russian Cyberpunks. Wish we had a little more on who exactly they were before they died, but there it is.
As for action scenes. I'm not over-awed by this sort of thing. But for me, the titanic battles worked because there were people inside that I cared somewhat about and it had already been established that these machines are not at all invincible to the pilots inside. (At least for two of the machines.) But I do think that Shatterpoint? Base ought to have had some sort of coastal batteries, but whatever.
Thought the film was amazing. Went in expecting to be entertained simply due to Giant Robots fighting giant aliens = fun and awsome...
was actually done a LOT better than I expected and was pleasantly surprised and impressed.
am a fan of Charlie Hunnam, thought he was really solid in it.
Really loved the movie would see it again if friends rolled out to see it.
Just wanted to post a real-person perspective who understands not every movie is trying to achieve the same goals, and I thought this movie more than achieved the goals it set for itself.
was really well done and imo perfect for exactly what it was. 250,000 tons of awsome wrapped into 140 mins. Full of giant robots punching the shit out of giant aliens with some interesting characters thrown in.
Also completely agreed with Fallen.
Would totally pay to see a prequal... even a series of movies following each Jaeger team and their exploits. (Also see the main character go through jaeger training/academy etc... from the 1-2 scenes where we see the kind of process u had to go through to even be considered for a piloting position.. would love to watch 2 hours of people going through that training process
The team from the Pre-title scene... the Russian Team... the Chinese Triplet Team...
would def be interested in seeing more from all of them. its funny but I actually would have loved to see even more giant fighting robot action... Like see the Jaeger corps when they were at their peak.

that wouldve been neat!
also they should add like 5v5 in one fight *nerdgasm*
we need more swords, chain guns, cannons and boosters
I guess Del Toro has already started working on a sequel. It seems like most big movies get at least a trilogy nowadays. Heres an article from before the movie was even released.

I dont mind that the Russians and Chinese pilots died (although was disappointed the russians died..i mean they had the longest streak of any Jaeger team and they had one of the roughest outposts..so seeing them die was kinda saddening...) But i thought it really stole away a chance for a REALLY epic ending. I mean the ending was pretty epic as it was (when he split the Gaiju in two was sick) but i really would have LOVED to have seen like 5+ Jaegers vs 5+ aliens.. just to see that dynamic would have been neat.
also was more than happy to support Pacific Rim.. they had paid advertisements and sneak peaks for Riot for LCS... was a major sponsor... thought it was sick to see such a major entity as a movie this big to support Esports.
PR looks like its going to have to rely very heavily on overseas BO to carry it (similar to Battleship). At least in the US, with Red 2 and the Wolverine coming out, I think it might be hard for it to keep its head above water. For the China release, its probably going to bump into Fast 6 plus a bunch of local Chinese films. But its not looking like a bomb, just not the success that Legendary wants it to be. If we assume non-moronic Hollywood accounting, it may just about break even or only be a small loser.
Looking forward to the movie when it comes out in HK.

I wouldn't be surprised. I can't imagine how much work went into the battle of Hong Kong especially the battle offshore with the three jaegers and 2 kaiju's. Even the fight inside the city took a lot of work since they had to think of details such as the buildings, neon lights, bridges, streets, etc.

I'd say Australia had the worst because the Sydney Shatterdome had to cover the largest area of the Pacific by itself while Russia was also backed up by Asia's bases
Movie was awesome! I enjoyed it a lot. My friend was sitting next to me and I could tell he was just facepalming on the inside whenever something corny or cliche was coming up. But I reminded him before we watched this that it was supposed to be about giant robots fighting and shit, so he cant blame me.
So anyways, other than the awesome fight scenes and jizz-tastic giant robots. What really annoyed the crap out of me was the United Nations thing deciding to pull all funding on the robots and build a wall... A WALL... Ya, it was pretty retarded to say the least. And it took them 5 years to figure out that it can just be breached. Ah w/e. I supposed that was the one thing that annoyed me. But all for the sake of moving the plot forward. Could you imagine if they continued funding the Jaeger program... They woulda had like 100's of em by then.
But ya, good movie. I got my moneys worth. Also thank god they didnt kiss at the end. We didnt want another MoS awkwardness.
The movie is exactly what you'd expect and quite entertaining, moneys worth for sure. Also why didn't they just nuke the rift every time something came out of it if things really got that bad? And why the hell did they wait so long to pull out that badass sword that seems super effective?
They clearly said that they were losing jaegers faster than they can build them. The war has been going on for about seven years according to the time stamp in the beginning. Look at the map above. Those are the amounts of jagers that were built. Most of them were destroyed because of stronger emergence of kaiju's. Chuck was sort of correct when he made the statement that the only reason they started losing is because of mediocre pilots, which is why he didn't like Raleigh since he thought he was a has been/washed up. Besides the pilots, a lot of jaegers were showing their age such as Russia's Cherno Alpha. The jaeger packs a heavy punch, but it was no match for stronger kaiju's. Most of the pilots' prestige and fame came from defeating lesser kaiju's. If they had more Mark 5's like Australia's Striker Eureka, then it might be a different story.

They didn't pull out the sword until Mori remembered it had swords. She was one of the people that helped rebuild the Gipsy Danger. She probably forgot to tell Raleigh in the beginning. As for nuking the portal, I assume it would cause more harm than good. It is like how in real life, people like to say another nuke or two would destroy the planet (paraphrase of what I've heard/read). I know it's not any better than cutting apart kaiju's and have its blood in the ocean, but hey, it's just a movie.
I don't know if anyone else felt this way but when I saw it, I was really happy for a second at the beginning of the movie when I thought the "introduction" character had just died.
The movie until the title is just setting up the basic plot, there's nothing that needs to make those characters continue to be the main characters in the movie :p
I think the black guy and the son of that other guy might have survived (for the sequel), because they don't need to be present for the bomb to activate, they could have launched away in an escape pod before the explosion. See those helicopters go past Mako and the main dude at the end, they could have went on to pick up the other 2 pods.
Also, wtf don't they have a GERMAN Jäger? lol That would have been ultimately cheesy and sick. I guess it's because it's on the pacific... but still it could have been assembled in germany and gotten a german crew.
