I had hoped when this movie came out, that would be the end of that. I can't believe people see "Giant Robots and monsters", and think "must be a ripoff of Evangelion" still at this point. Guillermo del Toro even said he never even watched Evangelion before. Evangelion is so big in the minds of anime fans that anything that has giant monsters punching giant robots and even the slightest bit of angst or moodiness in a character = it was derived from Evangelion! Sad because most of the concepts in Evangelion are actually derived from 70s and 80s anime and 50s-70s kaiju films... Seriously, it's so tiring. Just because you're a fan of Evangelion or have seen it and knows that it includes giant monsters and robots doesn't make you different or make this a rip-off.

I see the same comment repeated over and over again: "Plot sucked, characters sucked, acting sucked, story sucked, except the fighting was SO COOL! 10/10 would see again!!!" These are the exact same critiques leveled against the first and third Transformers films, except with a few modifications: "Plot sucked, characters sucked, story sucked, the movie dragged so long and the fights were just explosion after mindless explosion. BORING! Terrible movie. Don't waste your money. 4/10 at best" *mild spoilers incoming for Man of Steel and Pacific Rim* Similarly, Man of Steel is slammed for multiple issues as being an awful film. Some people say the fighting dragged and was boring (but Pacific Rim wins for having awesome fights!) Some people cry about the fact that lots of people would have died during the Kryptonian assault on Metropolis and Superman didn't save everyone (millions of people die in Pacific Rim, no one cares). The acting quality of Man of Steel is often panned due to weak performances from Lois and Superman (debatable). However, young Clarke, Ma and Pa Kent, Zod, and Jor El all offer captivating performances. Pacific Rim is clearly worse in this department; literally the only good actor was Edris Alba. Everyone else sucked, particularly the leads, to the point where the Australians didn't even sound Australian. Man of Steel's dialogue is often cited as being awful! Who would say 'It all goes down-hill after you kiss a human?' or 'I just think he's kinda hot?'. Pacific Rim is once again worse on this front, with such lines as 'We're analogue!' and 'we have one more option....SWORD!' and (although not a line) a stupid slow-motion mood-destroying scene of a newton cradle being caressed by Gipsys fist. People often decry Man of Steel's pacing as a major issue, with confusing, stupid flash-backs and too much action. Specifically, the flash-back of Pa Kent saving the dog is cited as being stupendously retarded. However, Pacific Rim does no better on this front. The film is essentially an extended opening, 1.5 hours of boring dialogue with boring crappy characters saying stupid nonsensical things, and then 30 minutes of giant robot hitting giant aliens. To break up the 1.5 hour monotony we are treated to an equally stupid melodramatic flash-back of a little girl being saved by Edris Alba and an over-choreographed scene of faceless nobodies being beaten with sticks. Thematically Man of Steel is decried because of Jesus vs Superman analogies, burden of responsibility, genocide for the greater good, fate and destiny etc. I think many of these themes were handled well in Man of Steel, and upon multiple viewings these things are more readily appreciated. Pacific Rim doesn't even begin to compare to Man of Steel in this regard, because it doesn't really present a single theme to the viewer to be considered. Finally, Pacific Rim, despite all of its obvious flaws, is praised for having incredible action scenes. Yet the same people will say that Man of Steel's action is boring, mindless, senseless destruction...wait, what? Subjectively I would argue that Man of Steel has more captivating action, but that is a matter of taste. Objectively however, both films feature essentially the same thing: extended action scenes with lots of 'mindless' destruction, so how can one film receive praise yet the other be abused? If you want to pour out endless praise for Pacific Rim, don't turn around and say Man of Steel and Transformers are awful. The only good thing Pacific Rim has is action, and Man of Steel arguably does it better. Furthermore, Man of Steel has better acting, less intellectually-offensive dialogue, less plot-holes, better pacing, and presents ideas beyond the scope of the film narrative for the viewer to ponder.

Pacific Rim on the other hand, is a stand-alone movie similar to Neon Genesis(?). I went into both films with different expectations, PR had shitty acting, gaping plot holes, god awful drama and characters that you don't care if they all get wiped but we all got what we were looking for. Monsters vs Robots kicking ass.

Man of Steel is a big pile of shit and the worst movie by far this year. There, I said it. From acting, plot, action and fighting. They all suck. Too much talking for the first half and the second half is just mindless, cheesy fighting. At least Pacific Rim is much more entertaining.

Quite intrigued now actually, the UK trailer made it look REALLY cheesy, the kind of cheese that is just too much to stomach and while it has a distinct whiff of fromage by all accounts its pretty competent. @LilClinkin, I think many of your points are on the money, however for most people they aren't really claiming it's any kind of auteur-driven masterpiece. From what I've read it's largely 'brainless, but actually delivers visceral thrills'. With Transformers (haven't seen Man of Steel), the criticism of it wasn't so much that it was brainless, but that it somehow made giant robots and hundreds of millions of dollars of lovingly rendered carnage boring to watch.

The first one is the most important. In Man of Steel, we expect a decent story with good characters because there's the potential for that. Meanwhile, Pacific Rim tells us from the get-go that it only intends to show really cool fight scenes between giant robots and aliens. And it gives us exactly that. No more, no less. There's no reason to go see it other than for the cool fight scenes, and the promotional material makes this perfectly clear. Therefore, very few people would be disappointed. Meanwhile, those who went into Man of Steel expecting a masterpiece of storytelling might feel like it didn't live up to what it could have been. Although, for what it's worth, I liked Man of Steel as well. But for different reasons.

Anyway, people seem to be comparing the two movies a lot, so I'll go so Pacific Rim. A movie doesn't have to have an amazing story for me to enjoy it in theaters, it won't compare to movies with a great, thought provoking plot, but I don't expect that from every movie. If a movie brands itself as simply "giant robots fighting giant monster", I'll go into it expecting cool fight scenes and nothing more, and most likely enjoy it.

Definitely won't win any Oscars. Liked the style, but there was bad plot, bad acting, and silly humour. The Japanese chick grew on me.

(if they weren't, i sure was.) but the reason i like the battle scenes more than man of steel is because 1. i went into man of steel expecting somewhat of a subtle deep film sort of like batman; afterall, chris nolan was producing it. so i went into man of steel expecting one thing and got mindless battle scnes. 2. the monsters were fucking awesome but seriously, after watching pacific rim i feel like watching a drama really bad. my mindless action quota is filled for the summer after mos and pacific rim.
