Damn, they aren't exactly being subtle about Kuvira going on a power trip and basically becoming Darth Vader. I still wonder what her real motives are, we hardly know anything about her, and what happened in the 3 year gap. Guess we'll see! After that final scene, it definitely makes more sense than ever that Toph will play a major role this season. Who better to help Korra gain back confidence than The Blind Bandit??

Looking at the alternatives, I can see why.

Strong, determined/focused military leader who can get things done vs spoiled brat royalty. Bit cliche, but could be done well. Even 14 year old girls are rockstars and ass kickers without any thought. Its a totally under rated part of the show. Definitely agree. Avatar has always had those types of female characters, too.

They did mention that Kuvira was clearing Ba Sing Se, so it's not that she just hadn't gotten there.

Kuvira clearly is the villain, you can feel it right away. Her behaviour and her general mannerism just reaks of it. + Show Spoiler + It seems to me she's on her way to building the new "Fire Nation", but with metalbending. You guys notice that she was using exclusively metalbending against the bandits? Her intent clearly doesn't lie with helping people, but building a sort of empire, or "maintaining order". She only helps under certain circumstances, strongarming people into pledging their loyalty to her. Her character seems a bit off to me though. She just comes out as this total badass who's conquering (or "uniting") all over the place. I'm hoping they give her good character development and provide flashbacks to show us just how she got to where she is. A crucial mistake in TLA was the underdevelopment of Ozai, if you ask me. I hope they don't repeat that, even if they don't have nearly as many episodes for Kuvira. Speaking of flashbacks, I'm hoping we get a lot of them. I really want to know what happened during the time gap. So far, we're getting pretty strong hints that we will, which is good. Not much going on in Republic City though... Prince Wu is yet another douche, I personally feel like it's getting a bit old. Why must all monarchs in Avatar be assholes? I don't see them repeating that pattern again, what with Earth King Kuei being a total doormat, so I'm guessing he'll develop into a more caring and interesting character. At least, I deeply hope so. It would honestly bug me if he were just another royal airhead. Finally, Korra... Very little screen time in the episode, but man that was interesting. She's off somewhere in the Earth Kingdom, apparently in a much more gruesome version of Toph's Earth Rumble VI? She also seems to struggle with her bending. I get the feeling she's rather weak at the moment, and will improve over time. All in all, it was a great episode. They got me curious, and I too wish we would get two episodes per week. T_T

Makes you wonder if Kuvira hired thugs to steal from the city / steal the food that Opal and Kai got.

Random bandits all of a sudden get a plane and are able to pilot it/fight an airbender in the friggen air? Lol

Old guys pushing into their 100's, girls with no arms, guys in wheelchairs... Let's face it, if you're not badass in the Avatar world, you're doing something seriously wrong.

That said my point still stands. Killing the Avatar was never the group's only goal. But why make it their only goal? If their original plan was to kill the Avatar and then sit by idly, then the red lotus wouldn't change the world in their vision. It accomplishes nothing. Who said it was their only goal? That was their first main goal. Did you watch all of season 3 or just forget? They were originally going to assassinate the president, but decided they would do it later to go and get korra out of the way (no one knew where the red lotus members were at the time). And again as previously stated the Avatar is the biggest threat to them killing off all the world leaders (which is their goal after korra). Um we have known about it for a month .Really good episode :D
