They weren't sure if Book 1 was going to have any extensions but they probably have a better idea whether a female protagonist on Korra can attract enough viewers now. Actually some online research clears up that book 2 will be a standalone too :/

I'm trying to like this season a little more, but as someone else said, it just isn't as "epic." And I guess it might be hard to set up another "omg the world is going to explode" scenerio, but haven't we really just got a bunch of small-time water bending villains now?

Avatar would be much better as a bloody, violent series about political strife and civil war. Cut out all the romance, add in actual side effects to being burned, frozen, blasted against a wall and make the characters as crazy and volatile as the Battlestar Galactica cast and you have yourself a 5 star show. But that's just my opinion.

I haven't seen the latest episode but I was disappointed that all Korra needed to do to open that spirit portal was smash it. Somehow I figured she needed to calm the spirits. . . in a spiritual way.

It's an issue of cleared chakra more than spirituality. There's a popular theory that the firs season had a subtheme of her clearing them.

But that's just my opinion. If TLA or Korra had realistic injuries than the fights would be a lot different and possibly less enjoyable. Because it's a children's show benders can go blow for blow with each other without much consequences, but if there were realistic injuries then everything would need to be dodged or blocked otherwise they might die. It's like how other children's cartoons can have people punch each other constantly and throw people off moving trains. What would be the point of chi blocking when you can just stab someone or why throw daggers that pin someone down when you can throw the dagger into their chest. Of course death is still present in both series, but to a very limited degree when considering bending would be a lethal weapon in our world.

But I really didn't get that it was "avatar state magic" rather than pure smashing. It just had absolutely no buildup going into it. I mean she didn't show any positive interaction with the spirits but suddenly her avatar state "fixes it". Even w/o help from *evil-from-the-second-he-entered-the-room* who can bend spirits.

She knows she's capable of crushing them, she straight up told unalaq she could take out his army if it came down to it.

The avatar is the bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. The fact that a key can open a door doesn't seem odd to me.

I thought about that, but then what is the point of entering the Avatar state to do so? It seems like something any waterbender could do. I mean, not five minutes later you have Eska sliding on the water and riding a huge wave. She's no Avatar. If she didn't enter the Avatar state to summon that little ball, that explanation would make sense.
