No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is. Remember to spoiler season 6 content, and clearly label your spoilers.

I do want to say though: I'm really trying to understand why a male demographic of (seemingly) Western ideology would be following or interested in this particular show. I've watched the various recommended starting shows numerous times and strained so hard to understand, my eyes are almost popping out of my head. It's just not coming to me. I just don't understand. This doesn't come from some desire to be a fan of the show, though I am always open to new things - I just want to understand why there is a following of males between 15-35. I guess it's sort of social puzzle for me to solve. My initial theory after watching the first episode was that these people are high on marijuana while watching, as I could definitely see some people (and myself) gaining some enjoyment from the bright colors and patterens while stoned. However, it appears that most people here just watch the show under normal conditions. And when I watched the show under normal conditions, I was very bored with the content. Keep in mind also, that I am a TV afficionado - I enjoy science fiction, fantasy, crime drama and a variety of cartoons. But this appears to be something that I cannot enjoy. And I can't imagine anyone I know enjoying it either (but apparently there is a huge following so perhaps some people are closested). For those who are male between 15-35, can you describe or repost some theories as to why there is so much interest in the show for you? I'd like to see as many posts as possible regarding this. Thank you much!

Thank you much! Look, we appreciate people coming into the show with an open mind and, having given it a shot and decided it isn't for them, doesn't immediately assume we're in it for irony or whatever. However, we really don't have to (or want to) explain ourselves to everyone who comes by the thread that doesn't get it, especially since this question has already been answered over and over and over and over. Hell, the OP has links to posts by TL members specifically answering these questions. Go read those. TL;DR: people like different things. There's no mystery here.

Thank you much! This comes up every 5 pages or so and most of us have written a few tens of paragraphs to that effect. I advise you, if you actually care, to look through the thread for that. Short version: It's cute, it's a coherent world and it's very well produced. And for the record if we were each the last person on Earth with no "following" to be part of we would still watch it.

This is a world where the presence of girly, candy-colored pony protagonists are juxtaposed against creatures from myth and ancient magic that they don't seem to be able to fully understand; a world where worrying about how you're going to be able to harvest all these apples before they start spoiling sometimes has to be put aside to take care of a rogue dragon that's happened to roost too near your town. From the Greek Hydra to Tolkien-style dragons to creations of the writer's imaginations (I never saw the timberwolves coming; that was a really pleasant surprise), the creatures are definitely not what you'd expect, and they're more in line with what we, as fans of fantasy and mythology, expect from them. Instead of de-fanging these threats, the writers to let them keep recognizable characteristics that make them feel like they're actually creatures of myth, and not washed-out, generic personalities slapped in different bodies for diversity's sake. Dragons hoard gems and breathe smoke and fire, the Hydra lives in a swamp and is strangely aggressive for a monster in a cartoon about ponies, and the cockatrice actually turns one of the characters into stone. TV Tropes lists that as a FATE WORSE THAN DEATH, and it happens to a candy-colored pony. Sometimes I swear I watch the show on Saturdays just to see what the hell they'll put in this universe next. The characters are great too. While they're initially set up as these bastions of self-righteousness, representing 5 "inherently good" qualities (and magic, which we see has a dark side too), that's not all they're about, and most of the episodes are either kicked off or sustained by realistic character flaws. These ponies are honest, loyal, generous, and kind, but they're also deceitful, greedy and a lot meaner than what you'd expect from a show aimed at the "little girls" demographic. They're prideful, they cheat, and they steal, but for reasons we can understand, and most of us have probably done similar things for near-identical reasons. It's also awesome to see a show with a focus on strong female characters aimed at a younger demographic. Of the 6 protagonists, two are business owners, two have (supposedly) regularly-paying jobs, one's a student (it's important to note that most bronies are high school and college aged males, so we can relate) and one's basically a veterinarian. None of them actually lives with an authority figure, unless you count Granny Smith or Big Macintosh, but Applejack still seems like she makes all the important decisions. They are remarkably self-sufficient in their day-to-day tasks, meaning they don't have to ask mommy if they can go outside to play now; they just go outside. That's all for now; starting to get too tired to continue. If I think of more I'll post it later.
