I used to watch DBZ when I was a kid (7 or 8). Funimation decided around last June that they were going to re-do every episode of DBZ starting with the Raditz saga and air them on Nicktoons. It's actually very good but the problem is they don't take breaks between seasons of the show, they randomly stop airing episodes with no warning at all for months at a time.
Well during the last episode Dr. Gero escaped and ran back to his lab to activate androids 17 and 18...then they stopped. This was in March.
First of all: does anyone actually watch the show (of course someone on TL does), and when do you guys think they will air the next episode? What do you guys think of the random stoppages and of the show itself?

Dragonball Kai was a re-edit by Toei Animation for the 20th anniversary of DBZ and Funimation decided that dub that.
Eh.. I watched some episodes, and my roommate watched them all (he's never watched the original series), I think it's nice they cut out so much filler in the episodes, but then again there was more suspense and epicness, I mean the Ginyu force defeated in 1 episode is
DBZ kai (I think it's the same stuff as toonzai) is censored beyond belief QQ. I remember watching the episode where vegeta kills the ginyu force, only that you don't actually see vegeta kill them (i.e. I never saw him blow up jeice)
Will add some examples
Original Chiaotzu death:
DBZK:
Remember how Frieza blows up Krillin? Well in DBZK he just disappears:
Blue Mr. Popo (because being black and having lips is racist, like how jynx was banned in pokemon):
I know all these episodes are already dubbed so I guess they're having trouble getting the rights to the later ones. I thought that other channels had rights-related issues with airing every season in the past.
I don't remember Mr. Popo being blue in DBZ Kai, guess we'll find out in a few episodes when they train in the time chamber
Even if they are censored they're still very good to watch, more so for me because I was too young to remember/understand anything that was happening in the original episodes.
I've been watching seasons 1-9, i have the ones that arent cencored/blue popo. It's pretty sweet but after cell the series gets kinda meh. I don't really like Buu as a villain.
The censors aren't that big of a deal and doesn't change too much from the actual show. I do enjoy the fact that the story moves along a lot more smoothly.
I went back to watch the original series from beginning to GT and I hated how much they stretched out the episodes. I remember reading the reason was because the manga was still being written so they tried to buy time. Supposedly, Kai follows the manga better.

DBZ is not a masterpiece I'm afraid. I think that's nostalgia speaking. Please go re-watch it or better yet watch some better anime. You will see the difference in no time!

I have re watched every episode at least every 2 years. They are butchering my childhood :'(

In Japanese? No way. This is one of the rare times when the English voice was better. Simply said, it's because it's not the same as sounding like a little kid like he did for DB in the Japanese.

Oh I watch dbz a lot and rewatch the series like once a year, love it still more then pretty much any other anime ^^. Just like how the powers are and stuff way cooler then like any other anime imo :D

I watched DBZ a bunch when I was a kid, sat down and watched this re-made version with my girlfriend today (marathon ftw). It's decent. Pretty funny watching it as adults. They do skip a lot of filler though. I'd say, length wise, it's no more than half the show it used to be.
Why all the hate on KAI? it was great, the fights were 100% better for having removed that shot of smoke rolling over a hill that was in DBZ... You know, that shot? that happened 40 times an episode, every episode, in every fight... I watched the whole thing in japanese, and now i am very sad that it is finished, cell saga was AWESOME
rewatching the old episodes was so painful for me...there were so many episodes that were filler or where they take fucking forever to say something, and they can sometimes take a whole episode to power up! seriously watching goku taking a dump for 15 minutes to turn into super saiyan is just painful
Well I watched all of DBZ as a kid and loved it obviously.
When I heard about Kai I was pumped but I was hugely disappointed. It's not that I think DBZ is perfect in every way, it's not even the nostalgia holding me back (IMA CHARGIN MY SPIRIT BOMB x10 eps), it's just not much of an improvement over DBZ that's worth watching.
I'd rather watch DBZ myself but obviously anyone that hasn't seen DBZ would watch Kai instead.

yeah it's quite ridiculous how much filler there is in DBZ lol, I remember when Freeza tried to blow up namek and then he says it will blow up in 5 minutes, 20 episodes later namek finally explodes and goku escapes -.-.
Ugh.. whatever version of Kai America has ended up with (based on those youtube clips) is absolutely terrible. I'm fairly sure Australia has (luckily) ended up with the uncut Japanese video and audio.
Is this "toonzai" version just the one that airs on TV or is that all you get? I feel sorry for you guys
I can almost understand editing out the blood and stuff since it needs to air as a kids show in America but... Blue Mr Popo? Really?
Some quick differences based on the youtube clip of Chaozu's death:
Nappa also bashes him into the rocks (like the original) in my Australian version of Kai...
As for whether or not I enjoyed Kai - I'd say I definitely did. It removed a lot of the pointless filler. The episodes are much more concise with less emphasis on people flexing and grunting a lot. I think it's a big improvement over the original.
Isn't Dragonball Kai just DBZ with all the filler cut out? Whats with all the people saying it was butchered? I haven't seen any of this Toonzai stuff, so maybe they just went overboard with the editing, like what 4kids did to One Piece.
Watched the original DBZ long time ago and thats enough for me.There is no point rewatching Kai which is the same as the original minus the fillers.
I dont rewatch anime in general (only anime i remember rewatching couple times are DMC, Hellsing OVA, Kenshin OVA ) and im not doing some old one that i didnt even enjoy at all.

Buu was mindless, and stupid. He also had no deep connections with almost any of the main cast.
Freiza was by far the best villain in dbz.
I disagree, a villain doesn't need to have deep connections with the main cast. I didn't really like Freeza (although I really liked the saga as a whole), can't really put my finger on it why I'm not so enthousiastic about him.
Buu on the other hand was masterfully thought out, first form being like a naughty kid, being split in evil and good Buu and gradually getting more and more evil. I really liked that saga, especially the last form and the form without having absorbed any of the Z fighters.

I love the anime though, my favorite anime ever .
Yes, the freeza saga got soooo ridiculous. Those really needed to be edited down.
And even after all these years, watching an episode the other day confirmed that I still like the show . Though Robotech will always be my favorite (first anime I watched I think, maybe Pokemon was before, I dunno)
I think you guys might need to rewatch dbz because he only did the spirit bomb charge for ONE episode not 10.
Kai is beyond terrible, i cant believe the amount of things they have taken out and CHANGED, the music for one annoys me more than anything. The music in DBZ was extremely good, didnt need to be changed, it aged really well. The death scenes of characters did not need to be remade the way they did. Take the filler out, thats fine but dont CHANGE shit, example; take the episode where goku learns to drive, thats fine but dont take out the 35 seconds leading up to krillins death vs freeza. If they screw up Gohan vs Cell, i will NEVER forgive them for that, the Cell saga is the greatest saga but Freeza is the better villain.

In my opinion the Buu saga will always be the best, if u skip out the 20 pointless episodes of Gohan trying to get in Videls pants >.<
But the action in that series from Goku vs Vegeta to the end where Vegeto helps save the world, so much action in the Buu saga. But the best bit is original transformation of Super Sayian of course!
Ill have to watch these new DBZ kai episodes, i didnt think they were going to do any remakes, its good i guess! They should bring more episodes out <3

Mate, you just don't appreciate it 'cos you're older. It's like someone saying Bruce Lee movies are shit compared to Jet Li's recent ones, but without the Bruce Lee ones to set the precedent Jet Li's movies wouldn't be as good as they are today.

Sorry mate but akira toriyama didn't really even want to write the Buu saga he had to be convinced to write it by the fans. The majority of people who watched DBZ will also agree that the Buu Saga was worse than the Saiyan, Freeza, Namek, Ginyu Force, Android and Cell (including Cell games) Sagas, I will give the Buu saga credit for being better than the Garlic Junior Saga and Dragon Ball GT
No amount of editing is going to make DBZ good. It's poorly drawn and the animation is even worse. It was even terrible by the standards of 1989.
The OAVs are pretty good, and the TV specials are decent, but the show itself was a turd. Kai is only less of a turd because it's shorter and therefore the pain ends much quicker.
If you're a DBZ fan, do yourself a favor and watch the OAVs, then maybe read the comics. The art is meh, but compared to the anime it looks like a renaissance masterpiece and the pace is much much quicker. It's also a lot funnier and uncensored.
