Reading here about Jon's death got me thinking about the purpose of the killers and their main motive. We all saw how chaotic is the pointing out of the Lord Commander and how risk for the killers it could be. I don't believe that the killers would risk their lives if a Lord Commander who is not their friend got picked, because they did kill a brother even if his actions were questionable. I believe we could see a riot and taking over of the NW by power by the killers.

I'm still depressed that Rob died...

I don't think Jon's dead, I think the wildlings/giant will come to his aid.
Also: Melisandre, we see that Thoros was able to bring back Catelyn as well as Dondarrion, why wouldn't Melisandre be capable of the same thing when it's implied that she is so talented in the ways of the Lord of Light?
I think it's all part of Jon coming to realize that he needs Melisandre.

So did anyone ever wonder why is it called the Night's watch, rather than the Ice watch or the Wall watch?
"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all nights to come."
In the very oath itself there are plenty of references of them being the light to confront the night, and only one on fire against ice.
So my theory is: Winter is Coming, for sure, and it might be years long, we know that. But, on top of that, a permanent night will fall when the Other's are going to finally go on a rampage. And the Night's watch only true purpose is to deal with them when that happens.
I'm probably not the first to think about it xD

I was under the impression that was nearly stated directly somewhere but now that you bring it up I suppose it is just a really popular in-between-the-lines inference thing. So I wonder if there is a small chance it could be wrong.
The whole thing was founded at the end of the long night though, add to that what we know about the others and this whole ice/cold/death/order/preservation vs fire/hot/life/chaos/consumption thing, so I'm pretty sure it is a sound assumption that they were founded, named and given purpose in accordance with a better understanding of that stuff than has survived into their modern setting.
Given the nature of the wall and threats of the north are there really any readers/watchers would would assume otherwise and take the 'Tywin Lannister' view of the nights watch?

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/The_Long_Night Perhaps it has something to do with that? Also I guess night is associated with cold and darkness and stuff.

I just finished A Dance with Dragons.
I'm dead certain that Jon is Azor Azai, mostly because all that Melisandre sees in her fires lately....is Snow.
|
i was pretty sure that Daenerys is Azor Azai, although it's almost too obvious. the book is called the song of ice and fire, ice are the others and fire are the dragons/Daenerys. i think this is what the final battle will be about.
either we see Jon revived by Melisandre (why have her there otherwise?) or the wall falls. There will be a blood bath between night's watch and wildlings if Jon is really dead and as a result the wall wont be ready when the others come. Which is possibly exactly what George R. R. Martin wants, since i doubt that the others will be stopped at the wall.
@night's watch against the white walker: i thought that right from the beginning, and when Jon cited the oath, i felt pretty much confirmed. all that fire against night thing had to refer to the others.
@motive for the murder: Their commander was about to break their oath, which would have ruined the reputation of the night's watch. Sth. they definitely wanted to prevent.
What do you expect to happen with Daenerys? Is she gonna try to unite the Dothraki before coming back to her city?

as tectonic plates shift, Meereen eventually collides with Westeros, bringing Dany's old dead bones with it

I think Danny is now going to finally move fast.
This new kalasahar that finds her will probably just accept her leadership right away, she'll probably kill their current leader and claim it. The she comes back to the city and ends the war with the aid of his dragon, Barristan having already exposed the leader of the harpies. Then, taking the combined forces of her original followers, the kalasahar, the left overs from the whole Mereen situation, plus Tyrion's Second Sons and the ships of Victarion, she'll finally sail for Westeros.
What is a lot less clear to me is what will happen then.. There is already another (pretender?) Targaryen in there, plus the Martells, who were her obvious ally upon arrival, just had their heir being roasted alive by one of the dragons. Also probably the Others will already be invading from the north, so it will be a complete chaotic mess with everything just gone to hell.
Or she might just fall from the back of Drogon and die. Could also happen.
Will be interesting to read anyway xD

He recently said he *wants* to have it out in 2014. He was 400 pages written, 200 edited right now.

...which is to say he is about as far along with it as he was with Dance...in 2007.

The Martell heir is the girl that is locked up as the lord paramount doesn't want her to fuck shit up and invade King's Landing. At least that's how I recall it.

Yup. She'll rave and rant about it all the way there as well. "The throne is mine goddamnit! Move faster!"

What will Barristan the Bold do when he finds out about another Targaryen with a better claim to the throne?

And if she is opposed to the idea? Whose side would such an honorable man take?

She has the dragons isn't that proof enough that she's the real succesor of the Targaryens?

She may be the most comparable to Aegon the Conqueror, but that doesn't necessarily change the line of succession.
