I don't consider myself a nerd, no, far from it. Not because I am too "cool" to be one, but rather, because I am not nearly smart enough to be labeled a nerd. However, I find the show The Big Bang Theory, which is basically about a group of 4 nerds living a young-adult life, simply hilarious. Every one of their jokes has some kind of crazy theory or idea in it, and if you actually pay attention you can learn quite a lot of history, literature, physics, chemistry, philosophy, technology, as well as a ton of comic/anime, entertainment and gaming stuff. I've only watched the first season and part of the second season so far, but I'm loving every minute of it.

Lol, sorry. It's a show around 2-years old, about a group of nerds living in California. I thought it would be interesting to see whether other gamers really like this show or not, or if it's just me
I follow the series, too. Of course sheldon is the carry of the show, comparable with Barney and himym. But the risk is, that the show is too carry-heavy which is often the case on TBBT I think. For me Raj is the funniest, he has some killer lines and when he drinks and talks to women its outrageous for the most time. :D
Love the whole concept of it. The season finale was fantastic, can't wait to see what Sheldon does in the next one. Love that they have professional Physicists on board, and the personalities are so unique and ever episode has something cracking me up.
Who would have thought a show about astrophysicists would be so popular! :D
Followed this since season 1, it's part of my "dl as soon as they come out" shows along with how I met your mother and house (scrubs and lost used to e on it as well, for obvious reasons not anymore). Really funny and entertaining .
Sheldon is my fave character and I'm actually starting to get irritated on Leonerds facial expression, like how his face is always in some weird contortion..
I loved BBT! All the nerd references, and Sheldon's constant OCD. I watched the earlier seasons on my computer, so I got to skip through a lot. Now that i'm actually watching it on tv, it gets kinda slow and repetitive. Much of the jokes are overused.
It definitely lost the spark it once had. They're trying to move the storyline a bit, with Penny+Leonard romance. However it feels like every episode they do something with it, the episode ends before any conclusion could have been drawn. Oh well, still a great show
Considering the comic potential of a group of nerds, I think the show is disappointing. I quite like the actors, but the script is just terrible. The jokes are predictable, the comic timing weak, and its just really unconvincing. Against all odds, a show about nerds seems...unintelligent.
The problem is that there isn't really an alternative I can suggest. About the closest is Spaced, which is still very different.
I have to love sheldon, his real life name is far too similar to my own, its like knowing I have a successful double out in the world. Besides, sooner or later everyone in the world will be saying bazinga after a joke.
would anyone watch this show if there was no sheldon is all i have to say about this poll. i think we can all relate cause we all have a sheldon(s) in our lives.
I love the show, but I've only followed season 1 so far I think. The IT is also pretty awesome, but it's on hold right now, right? Can't remember anymore, I watched all the eps that were out, now I haven't checked if they've done more already (was like season 3 was the last one)
she pretty much only wanted him for his rocket fuel.
I think the show is comedy gold! I'm an engineer and my girlfriend is a kindergarten teacher. We'll both be laughing our asses off at the show but very rarely at the same time or joke.
So far I think Big Bang Theory has been a solid show. I mean Sheldon may overwhelmingly be the funniest character, but the combination of the rest of the cast as well as sometimes just Raj by himself makes me laugh just as much.
The show isn't as good as it used to be, but it's certainly very entertaining. The only thing that pisses me off quite a bit is the super high volume fake laughter after every bit.
Decent premise, but not feeling it that much. Maybe its the laughter tracks making it seem too cheesy. Not bad though, still watchable and yea it might still be the best nerd show :D
I love big bang theory. But I'm starting to get annoyed by the whole off and on Penny/Lenard relationship. It was good when he just had a crush on her.

reminds me of futurama. the "main guy has crush on main girl" thing is ok and can be used for some funny stuff. but once it gets more serious and "deeper" it totally destroys the whole situation.
Some people don't understand how I can like this show as much as Community. While I do think Community is better is many aspects, my response would be that I love the characters. I simply like them more than characters on other comedies such as Community or 30 Rock. You won’t find a comedy pairing with more chemistry than Sheldon and Penny. Their scenes are usually gold.
It’s true, the show isn’t as creative as Community (it’s actually pretty formulaic). There was a jump in improvement from season 1 to 2 and I hoped it would continue to season 3 but it has settled into what it is. There really aren’t many truly nerdy or geeky episodes. Some references here and there but many of the show’s gags and jokes revolve around introducing Sheldon to a phrase and having him restate in his speak or dropping him in some social situation.
It’s actually gotten pretty bad over the 3rd season. Most episodes are Sheldon centric anyway but the 3rd season has a real loss of balance. The 3rd season is very hit or miss; feels like it’s missing some of the fun or whimsy or something from season 2. It doesn’t help that I’m not a fan of the Leonard/Penny relationship.
It used to be very good, but it turned too Sheldon centric very early on. And since it has gotten worse and worse. I still enjoy it, but the jokes have become predictable and overused.

this sounds interesting... thanks for letting me know about this show. i'm going to download and watch a few episodes and then let you guys know what i think about it
edit: LOL, just watched the first episode and thought it was pretty funny.
Howard's mother is my favorite. You never actually see her, and I think she's voiced by Howard himself, but shes a really funny "jewsish mother" stereotype. Also I can do a great impression of her voice which is a plus.
lol for a moment, i was gonna start ramblin about how "the big bang theory" is an amazing and unfinished assumption of the way life started how could you feel nerdy about loving this topic?
Then i saw the show part of it, and i've sadly only seen it twice but loved it to death both times, i happened to see the episode where i believe the star(main character) sheldon? He wanted to chill out with his girls friends, who happened to all be football fans, including her. When sheldon arrives at this house he is just baffled by the science of football, and tries to analyze it in his own way, which is just hilarious. Love the show. yay!
On June 09 2010 14:12 JohnUCrazy wrote: Let me know if they mention Starcraft.
Starcraft isn't popular and hip enough, they play halo. They also only make references everyday people will recognize so the show is basically "LOL XD NERDS HAHA". The edited in laughing also gets on your nerves after a while.
I found it somewhat entertaining for a few episodes, and one or two here and there really shines but it grows old quite fast.
yeah it seems like a better show than most other shows that also force you to laugh by playing those delighted audience noises, but that fact will still keep me from watching.

It's a bit cheesey and annoying sometimes, but mots of what Sheldon does is hilarious, I really hate Leonard though. Wouldn't even consider watching it if sheldon wasn't such a carryboat.
Leonards squinting with the eyes had me plenty annoyed for a while, I got over it though. I've learned to deal with the laughtrack/audience on drugs. It's okay imo with a laughtrack if it's done properly. This show just exaggerates it; "My new laptop came with windows 7" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA "Windows 7 is more user-friendly than Windows Vista" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA "I don't like it." HAHAROFLOLOLROFLOLMAOJIZZINMYPANTSLOL
Just a liiitle bit over the top.
Other than that I quite enjoy the show. Characters are funny and great together, Sheldon being my favorite seeing him as a way over-exaggerated version of myself. I thought the show was getting worse and worse at early season 3, but now it seems like it's getting better. Dat Finale.
I think it is a good show, but not a great one. Basically they have one really good character that the whole show is completely dependent on and the rest of them are pretty meh in general, with the occasional good moment. It's kinda like How I Met Your Mother in that sense (with Barney), though their other characters are still stronger than the rest of BBT. Also I have a hard time stomaching laugh tracks, They automatically makes shows feel a lot cheaper, and they slow down the pace since you have to add unnatural pauses between each line of dialogue.
So in short. I enjoy it and follow it, but wouldn't consider it close to It's Always sunny In Philadelphia, 30 Rock, Community, The Office or Modern Family (to just name other shows that are currently still running).

Well, Tracy Morgan is hardly the best thing about the show (though I don't dislike him), but Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey are both awesome and most of the supporting cast is really good as well (also, whenever Will Arnett makes an appearance it's instant gold).
Definitely unimpressed. It drives me crazy when they're playing a game like WoW or Halo and nothing they say makes any sense. Seriously how hard would it be to even talk to some 15 year old kid for 5 minutes just to make their gaming scenes look real.

That's a problem with like every show ever. Also, most directors/actors seem to think that you play games by mashing every button on the controller at once as fast as you can while wildly moving your hands all over the place.
This show is amazing ^_^ I love all the jokes in it haha and Sheldon is definitely my favorite character since I know someone who is almost exactly like him...

How I Met Your Mother is another great show as well. Pretty much the only two TV shows I follow to any degree.
Love how no one realizes that there IS NO LAUGH TRACK IN THIS SHOW. It is filmed in front of a live studio audience and the laughter you hear is completely real from the audience.. you can go buy tickets and go see the show being filmed yourself if you want.
edit: Sheldon in the ballpit doing the Bazinga! over and over again was one of the funniest things i've ever seen on television
It aint even a nerd show. It is just freaks who are "smart" and therefor ppl think they are nerds. Mostly they are just stupid and really bad jokes. Just because you have no social skill, does not make you a nerd.

Lol, indeed. I'm on season 3 now... and while the show is still entertaining, it certainly has gone downhill since the time that I started this poll (I had just finished season 1 then). The laugh track is just completely overdone. WE DON'T HAVE TO LAUGH AT EVERYTHING THEY SAY OR DO!!! It's like they think that they can take any simple action or sentence and make it funny... sorry, but you can't do that just by adding a fake laugh track... ugh.. and the laugh track itself is terrible (ironically, for the truly funny parts, the laugh track does not do the scene justice...)
While Sheldon has managed to stay funny - you guys were right when you say that Sheldon is the carry of the show, some of the other characters are getting just downright unbearable. In season 1 Leonard was this nice, slightly pitiable guy who was unlucky, and he was LIKEABLE. Now, I just want to punch him in the face - every time he talks, he's making fun of someone, mocking someone, or acting extremely annoyed (usually to Sheldon). While this is funny sometimes, when you make every single line he says an "ohhh snap!" comment, it just ends up getting repetitive and incredibly annoying.
Anyway, despite those complaints, I'm still enjoying this show greatly. Hopefully I can find another one like this (the new show The Good Guys is actually kind of similar, and I'm loving that one so far too).
this show has the same problems as the early season of HIMYM: one character stealing the show and the rest ist mediocre. HIMYM has improved very much, now everything is funny, but in TBBT it's still just sheldon.
Hello friends....... I am watching The Big Bang Theory tv show regular and believe me season 4 of this show is very interesting. You can catch this season on here.... http://thebigbangtheory.otavo.tv/

I personally love the big bang theory. I don't watch much tv, but it is easily my favorite tv show on right now. Probably partially because I can relate to parts of it, being a nerd myself...
The show has some reasonably funny moments but they are few and far between. Most of the time it's just as brain dead as Two and a Half Men and the rest of those rubbish shows most of the time. I'll watch it if friends are but I usually get bored and do something else half way through. I'd never voluntarily watch it.

I'm not a fan of that sentiment. For example:
The Office is a smarter comedy than Two and a Half Men. This is objectively true as far as I am concerned. I do not believe this is hearsay, nor a mere matter of consensus. If everyone else in the world thought that Two and a Half Men was the 'better' comedy they would all be wrong.
Catcher in the Rye is a better novel than Twilight even though one's preference for either is a matter of 'opinion'.
I just love it, i watched the first 3 seasons i think in like 2-3 days, god damn i was addicted, now they release like once a week and it's driving me crazy lol
I know I should like big bag, but I don't, and I don't know why. It's a clever concept, well written with very likeable characters, it even caters to my science nerd side, but I just feel indifference when I watch it. All my friends who know next to nothing about science love it though, strange since they miss half the jokes.
I just want to mention that I find it funny that Leonard and Sheldon's bookshelf has Norton Antivirus. I thought geniuses didn't need antivirus software (nor use Windows, for that matter! Sheldon mentioned on numerous occasions of his usage of Linux-based operating systems).

Arrested Development is one of my all time favorites as well. I was really sad when AD got cancelled, but in the end the viewers decide. Just proves that most viewers are dumbasses
Nevertheless I do also like TBBT, it's not on a level with AD but neither is it bad. Sheldon alone is worth watching in my opinion.
It's so sad that two best shows of all time both got canceled - Arrested Development and Firefly. I miss those series so much:|
TBBT is mediocre at best, it started really strong but nowdays I rarely find them funny. And the character of Amy Sarah Fowler (or whatever her name is) is the least funny character ever in any sitcom so far.
As for TBBT, another awesome show and does a really good job on a lot of the content and jokes. A lot of the general population might not get some of the more subtle jokes, but it's awesome for those of us who have experience with what their characters are involved in.

Go go cryptic advertisements!
I have a lot of crap on my shelf that I'm not using. You don't?
Doing theoretical physics, this show makes me cringe, worse than entourage and himym without barney and drama in it put together imo, shows like firefly and arrested development are on a different level to it also

Yeah. You may want to look up the meaning of the word "objective". I would be interesting in your normative framework that allowed you to come to this conclusion. Unless you provide one that works outside your own little world, I will just assume there is yet another child left behind.
I completely disagree, TBBT is an amazing show, and every week it delivers, arrested Development was good, but the TBBT is better.
Are you kidding? Arrested development was so brilliant. It was so damn good that its comedy could not be fully realized by people, sadly this is why the show died. TBBT is just another CBS sit com like HIMYM and 2 and a half men. It has a little premise to hook you into the show and then you are stuck watching a drama about characters and not the premise of the show.
Also the nerdyness of TBBT felt really phony to me. Every time the nerd things they did felt contrived. I don't know I cant quote anything specific because I don't have time to wade through like probably 40 hours of TV watching. Most of us here grew up as nerds or are still nerds to this day and I cant say I ever identified with these guys.
Further more the one guy (Sheldon I think) dominates the show and thats bullshit. He's clearly the best actor and hence gets the best lines but that makes for a really polarized show.
BBT is an awesomely entertaining show. However, they are on a major US network. The humor is often very cheap and easy, but that is what the show aims for.. They need to perform a balancing act of attracting self-proclaimed nerdy folk while also appealing to the general audience. What you see them do is provide a little something for everyone.. Hardcore nerdiness and science references for some, widely-accessible humor for others.. If they did not choose this formula, but rather tried to make the script and jokes intelligent and more complex, the show would not be on tv because the # of viewers would not be sufficient.
It's not an ideal brilliant nerd comedy by any means.. If it was, it sure as hell wouldn't be on CBS.
I have seen every episode.. I love this show!!! it took a few episodes for me to really start feeling it but once i got through a few i fell in love... awesome show, definetely suggest it!
this show is pretty funny. if you're able to look past what they stuff in to cater to the largest audience, a lot of the jokes are very well written. you've gotta expect a certain amount of pandering to idiots in a tv sitcom, beyond that the show is great. it helps that kaley cuoco is an ultra babe

She was a babe in Season 1 and 2. I don't know if I've just grown to accept her looks or they've toned down her cuteness to something just overall overdone on television.
Good show. The difference is they are living the 'Sterotype' of a nerd. They play video games, read comics and are super smart. Being a 'Nerd' doesn't just mean you follow those items.

Umm, just because they use a live audience doesn't mean it isn't canned laughter. The laughs are very heavily edited.

+1. consolidate doesnt seem to understand the context in which "objectively" is supposed to be used.

Can all the haters just leave this thread alone. We get it you dont like it. Yet all you come with is your opinion. We have our opinion that we like it. Let's just agree to disagree.
Well, the shows has definitely gotten stale imo. Used to love the show but it became a chore to watch somewhere in season 3 and now I only catch it sporadically.
The jokes are more tired; many told with similar setups and it just feels like they're digging from the same well.
Don't know why people keep bringing up the nerdy aspect. Some shallow references to comic book heroes and the like does not make a show nerdy. Who hasn't at least heard of X-Men, Superman, Star Wars, LOTR, Trek, etc which make up 90% of the references?
Season 2 was the best. Characters were at their most likeable and it wasn't nearly as Sheldon centric. Still, when I do catch the show, Sheldon and Penny scenes are still golden.
No need to hate though. If BBT isn't your thing, there's plenty of good comedies to watch.
Mean shit, some other good to great comedies on Thursday include: Community, Parks & Recreation, 30 Rock, and The Office.
Personally, really enjoying Community & Parks.
O and - Don't have an issue with it but BBT does use laugh tracks. Chuck Lorre is renown for his use of laugh tracks and 3 camera setup.

Well even if it is true that there is a live audience, do yo really think that any real person would laugh that loud and that consistently at a comedy show? And even if they did, and all the laughter is 100% real, it doesn't change that fact that it is still a terrible thing that should have completely died off almost a decade ago. It's not the laughter being fake that makes it bad.
Anyway, I like the show. Its not great but its funny enough to be worth my time, although it is probably the worst comedy show that I do follow, just a bit below How I Met Your Mother (as it so happens, the only other show with a laugh track that I do watch).
This show is really awesome it makes us nerds look more cool than we already are (long live nerds!!!), plus all of the characters are so awesome, Sheldon and Raj are definitely the best ones and funniest ones. :D Every one of them is really funny.
It's a nice show, but not really funny. It's made me smile a couple of times, but never laugh. Honestly the humour is staggeringly dumb for being considered a nerd show. Also all the constant obvious fake laughter is somewhat anti climatic, and the pathetic sex jokes make me think it's aimed toward 13 year old virgins The simpsons and south park are my personal preference atleast ^^
The show is really funny if you are a physicist like me and can find the characters in some of the people arround you. Then again the "you-have-to-laugh-now-too-because-we-do"-laughter is annoying as hell and takes a lot of the fun out of it again. I still hope that they take that out at some point then it would be great
the show ended up being that sheldon was the nerdiest and most notable character. i wish they would have distributed the stardom, so to speak. he's kind of like homer of the simpsons... he IS the entire show. penny is awesome but it's really about sheldon.

Its not great but its funny enough to be worth my time, although it is probably the worst comedy show that I do follow, just a bit below How I Met Your Mother (as it so happens, the only other show with a laugh track that I do watch).
have you ever been to a live comedy show, like a standup act or something? trust me when you get in a crowd, things that would normally make you just smile slightly at home would have to cracking up. especially when a lot of people probably have a few drinks before they go to watch these things, which makes them immensely funnier. ive gone to live shows of some comedians and even though if i watched them at home i probably would have barely smiled (even though im laughing inside), when im watching the same comedians live i crack up like a madman.

I agree. Her lines are either very lame or barely understandable.
Really enjoy the show, but I think they are focussing way too much on Sheldon. I mean, they even added Sheldon 2.0 (Amy Farrah Fowler). Figure it's gonna get boring pretty soon.
And btw, what happened to the girlfriend Leonard had for a while, the doctor? She just disappeared after a couple of episodes as far as I know, or did they explain where she went?
I can't believe Sheldon tops the poll; for me Sheldon ruins this show. Completely unbelievable character with really lame lines.
He acts as if he's gay. Why do they think lack of social skills = gay? It annoys me. It's probably because the actor that plays him is gay but it's just a massive miscast. He should be self-conscience yet he's almost flamboyant. A genius scientist wouldn't act like that.

It's always interesting getting other people's take because Sheldon's by far and away the most popular character. Don't know, always came off as an asexual with a possibility of asperger's.

But it could be even more funny. Imagine putting a character like a young House, perhaps a bit more socially awkward, in the mix. Someone a bit miserable who has funny lines of their own.
Either that or just make Sheldon gay. That would make sense at least.

Oh yeah, it could definitely be a way, way better show. I was just saying that your complaint of Sheldon seemed applicable to a whole bunch of other characters as well. Basically I think this show is a really good premise pulled of really bad. The end result is ok but could have been fantastic in the hands of some really good directors/writers (and making it single camera, no live audience crap).

Damn ... stupid season finale ... I want MOAAAAAAAAAR!
That was a funniest thing you had read today, no? Seriously what is funny about this sitcom I could not stomach it for long, 90% of "jokes" comes down to what I had written in the first line of my post.
I was pretty underwhelmed by the Season opener to be honest. It would be actually hard to point out what exactly I didn't like, I simply did not have fun wathcing it. Though the Amy-character is especially boring for me.

they did well considering how hard it is to set things to course after the finale.
I watched the newest episode and boy was I dissapointed. I didn't laugh at a single joke. I didn't even crack a smile. Which isn't really new to me as I find most of this show just unfunny as shit, thought it sometimes makes me laugh, which is why I still watch it. It wasn't that I didn't get any of the jokes or miss some subtleties, it was like watching Dane Cook perform stand-up.
dont even know how they are supposed to make the show more appealing to me, it just seems it kinda gets pretty repetitive.
I cant even name what really bothered me, i just didnt laugh as much as i used to in the previous seasons.
Well, that makes a mediocre season opener for tbbt, modern family, community and himym (which at least in comparison to its last season was a bump in quality).
Just Parks & Rec seems so continue where it left of in season three, awesomeness.
The gap between the really good episodes is getting wider and wider =/ It's turning into HIMYM - fun at first, then it just gets crappier and crappier.
This show went downhill last season. They're trying to cater to the female audience way too much now. I don't think I can take much more of Penny and Leonard's acting anymore; their facial expressions are just horribad.
But thinking about it, the show has been going downhill for quite some time now. I guess I forgot about that fact and hoped that the break would get me excited again.
I don't understand how anyone can learn anything from The Big Bang Theory. All of their supposedly 'nerd' references aren't any more advanced than grade 10 science or grade 7 history...>_> It's still funny at times though, just not very informative at all.

It's all good, Psych season 6 premiers in 18 days with a title Shawn Rescues Darth Vader. It's going to be amazing. I can't describe how much I love that show, watched through all the seasons 3 times already.

It's a funny show but calling it "the best Nerd Show EVAR!" is a bit of stretch, if this is a nerd show why do I have hipsters and self-titled nerds coming up and asking me if I have ever built a death ray, or when the renaissance fair starts? It pisses me off that every one under the sun thinks that anyone with an interest in Math and Science is an Obsessive compulsive freak, who has a conniption every time someone takes his seat. This show doesn't even try to make references that only the actual nerds will get?

Yes, it does.
I would have to give recognition to both posters, as I feel they are both partially right in their own way. My feeling is that this show is not as nerdy as people think however some highly nerdy reference exist, but they are extremely rare. It all boils down on definition of a nerd which I feel is almost impossible to create for a general purpose. For some people nerd is someone who reads comics, while for guy who has little to no knowledge, about comics and read only one series he likes or has a general knowledge about the topic, nerd is someone who collects them, know every story in every book, can quote characters etc etc. I myself don't think I am a nerd, although I've heard this from one or two people, but it was fine with me (I couldn't find a better wording, I don't think nerd is an insult ). As far as the show goes, I love it and it almost never disappoints me. It is certainly most nerdy show on the network television, but it's not full out nerdy. That's reserved for low budget cable sci-fi shows, or straight to DVD movies.
I really hate this show. Never before have I seen a less accurate and more annoying depiction of nerd culture, complete with totally overused laugh tracks. If you ask me, it seems more like a show about nerds for people who aren't nerds. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm more of a videogames/anime type nerd than a science nerd, but the humor totally escapes me. Not in an "I don't follow the premise of the joke" way but in a "I don't understand WHY this is supposed to be funny" way.
Sheldon: I am doing something nerdy. *HAHAHHAHA* Sheldon: Oddball followup comment. *HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*
I'm not trying to troll or derail (also I know I'm not the first to criticize) but the OP did say he was interested in seeing other people's opinions. I absolutely can't stand the show and don't see how anyone thinks it deserves the audience it's been getting, let alone the awards.
edit: also I do agree that the show doesn't exactly help with negative nerd stereotypes. Showing two nerdy dudes watching anime/playing videogames with a fairly normal girl getting all weirded out about it doesn't exactly help to place gamers/geeks/nerds/whatever at a higher cultural standpoint. But I guess the jokes are just a product of what the audience thinks is funny.

you should know that humor generally achieves funniness by exaggerating a stereotype or reaction towards a certain stereotype. right?
personally i think the show is hilarious; not necessarily because of any "nerd" component, but rather because I've never seen anyone real or or fictitious who has the utter lack of social cues as Sheldon does, and his definite lack leads to many authentically funny situations.

Yeah, was a bit more advanced references in the start... Not all that hard to follow though, but since most never took any interest at all in science class I suppose they had to dumb it down to not upset the part of the audience who are ignorant.
I don't want to single out Americans as the reason for the change though, while it may hold some truth with all those religious nuts :p
First off, this is my FAVORITE show! Been watching since the beginning and it was cool seeing how the relationships developed and how, now, the show follows the characters more and more in their dating lives and awkwardness in those situations.
I am a bit disappointed (as many posters also expressed) that the show seems to have abandoned a lot of the "nerdy", "geeky" side humor in favor of more relationship/situational humor. I can attribute this to the network trying to expand their target audience to what more of the "average" person can identify with, and I guess it's working. While I still anxiously await the new episodes (tonight!!), I would love to see them bring back more of the old humor about random physics theories.
Awesome show though, I have gotten quite a few people addicted to it :3
Separate thought: Does anyone else feel like, at the beginning of the series, we (the audience) were mainly laughing with these nerdy guys and their awkwardness with social life like we are in on the joke, but in recent episodes, the way it is written and laugh-tracks, we (the audience) are sorta laughing at these characters, i.e. "wow these guys are really nerdy"
Idk if that makes sense but it was a random thought I had while watching one day and was wondering if anyone else noticed any kind of slight, subtle shift. Thoughts?

I gotta agree with this. It's really just your standard mindless sitcom where the punchline to every joke is a random three-word phrase from a science textbook.
I'm sure I take personal offense since I hold nerd and geek culture in high regard, but everything init I see is trying to rally the audience to 'don't feel bad, nerds are stupid too'.

Amy is becoming really funny IMO. And i'm still kinda surprised that after 5 seasons, I'm still laughing every episode, and doesn't even matter if i've seen it 10 times already.

Well, the scientific jokes are quite good i think, its not just phrases from textbooks. (e.g Sheldon using Schroedingers Cat as a methapora of Penny's relationship with Lennard)
I also dont think that the show trivializes nerd culture or something like that, i think its exactly the opposite. Over the seasons Penny switches from an outsider to a member of the group, sometimes she even refers to nerd/science stuff and is seriously interested in it. If there's one typ of person the show makes fun of then its the muscular, stupid one. Often shown as one of Penny's ex- boyfriends or one-night stands. (The guy that thought the laser could destroy the moon was pretty hilarious)
You know, I think that determining whether or not a person will like Big Bang theory can be measured along a fucking uncanny valley.
The closer a person is towards being like the people portrayed on the show, the more they will like it, until a certain uncanniness is hit between a real person and a character on the show and a character on that show, and they just start to hate it.
example
this show is terrible, its unfunny and dwells in veiled narcissism. Please stop liking things just because they are "nerdy" its pathetic
SHELDON IS THAT YOU?
---- Also, fun fact. Did you guys know that Big Bang Theory is currently the most popular American TV show in the country of China?
I haven't been able to watch this show ever since my friend linked me to a youtube of an episode I had thought was funny... without the laugh track. Pretty much ruined the experience for me.
Also, they used to have actual theoretical physics jokes in the first couple seasons, haven't watched since then.
Ive given this show many chances, and I dont think its terrible or anything, I just expected a show about nerds to have more clever humour. Sure the characters are intellegent but the jokes are all standard sitcom-laughtrack crap.
But hey, as far as changing public perceptions go I think it is great. 20 years ago it would be pretty rare to see a girl whos looking for a "nerdy guy". Nowadays? Its pretty common, thanks in part to shows like this. So hey, anything thats gunna get me more action in the long run is pretty cool by me :D

I agree. In season 1 (I think) when Sheldon goes to a costume party as the Doppler effect, funny. Lately it's just been Sheldon reciting useless facts about random items, not that funny.
Regarding laugh tracks: TBBT is filmed in front of a live audience. Sure they might encourage people to laugh and applaud, but "overuse of laugh tracks" is just wrong. If you watch their blooper reels you will hear the audience laugh and clap at the bloopers, too, and the crew interacting with them.

The jokes arent even nerdy, they are mostly jokes that anyone with some pop culture knowledge will get and even if they dont get them they can laugh at the fact that they dont get them.

That was my impression of the show as well when I saw an episode of it. Felt like they were forcing the "nerd" into a standard stereotypical sitcom plot. I consider myself a nerd (I love my computer, I'm a computer engineer, etc.) and most nerds don't act the way they do on this show. Was really hard for me to get into it because of that.
and most nerds don't act the way they do on this show
Well, that's the point, they are basing it off of the stereotypes in peoples minds and then some. What makes it funny is because they don't take themselves seriously and make light about all of it.

I can't stand Big Bang Theory. All the nerd references are just that, references. They clearly have no idea what they're talking about. It ends up just feeling insulting to me, because the jokes are just "He says something nerdy - CUE LAUGH TRACK" as if just being nerdy is hilarious in and of itself.
Notice how practically nothing any of them say is funny at all. Hell, the first "joke" in the scene is "My mom sent me my old N64." Notice how neither of them have any idea about videogames (Multiplayer Mario64? Mario 64 didn't need a memory card).
I am seriously surprised this thread got the positive response it did. I honestly expected that the OP would just get told over and over again how the show is awful, and he should feel bad for watching it.

I've seen it now that they're airing reruns on other networks, and I was a little disappointed. Certainly knew people who talked like that in college (which is kind of refreshing to be around), but it doesn't feel like they take the ball and run with nerd funny.
Example: Sheldon is sick, so they sneak out to a planet of the apes marathon, dressed as apes. Punchline, one guy reaches for another guys popcorn, get your hands off me you damn dirty ape. That's it?
I don't know what they could do, but it's not enough. They try to fill in for the weakness of their nerd funny with psychological abnormalities, like Sheldon's various anxiety disorders, which seems kind of forced and cliched. And this could all work if they had some extremely clever or well executed plots, but (at the least the ones I've seen) are pretty average.

Bitter much? Just don't watch man. Easy 'nuff =/
I don't watch. I only posted because I am surprised how many TL users like it. After more thoroughly reading the thread, I see that the show wasn't always this bad, so while I maintain my opinion that the show sucks, I'm a little less disappointed in the average Team Liquid user.
Its supposed to be a show for the average joe. Make them "feel" smart and nerdy. I just look at it as mild entertainment.. Its funny if you go in with an open, non-overcritical mind.
I love watching it with my m8s, because they love it but dont get half the references/subtleties, like back when penny was playing AoC etc, or the idd awesome zerg shirt
The only real pet peeve of mine, in regards to the nerdy shit is their overly fanciful use of language. I mean how many times can a discovery be paradigm altering? I'm smart and all, and I use large words, hell none of the stuff really goes over my head [most of it is gibberish anyway], but seriously? No one speaks like that. No one spells out the various elements involved in a glass of milk when they ask for it. Outside of that I really like the show, though I can see how it gets stale for some people.

To be fair I thought the nerd jokes in the beginning ~Season 1-2 were pretty good. But after that they were definitely dumbing it down for the mainstream audience. Lets face it, if they were true nerds they wouldn't be using Macbooks, Alienwares or playing Halo
They're running out of the good stuff, of course, but i'm impressed. The series has definitely taken a turn for the better lately, Amy is a really good character and they keep coming up with smart choices for where they're taking each episode.
I have had a friend force feed me this show for ~1 season, and i can't say it was much of anything. I get the jokes, but i don't get why people find them funny. It's all been done to death. It's just a "nerd" packaging this time around. Granted, most things have been done in some form, but this feels really watered-down and stale. I'll give the first episodes of season 2 a chance, but i'm not expecting much.
So I sent Wil Wheaton a message via reddit about that shirt. This was that message and his response.

Hey Wil, I saw that you were wearing two starcraft shirts on yesterday's episode of Big Bang Theory. Was it your idea to wear them? And do you follow the starcraft scene at all?
[-] from wil sent 3 hours ago
I don't follow the scene at all today, but back in the old days of Windows 95, I loved to play Zerg against my friends.
I think it's running abit stale, most of the "jokes" aren't even jokes, it's just something considered nerdy, ha ha ha, then something nerdy again, ha ha ha. It got old rather fast..
i think it's a very fun series, why do people have to make a big deal out of everything? it's just one more comedy and I find some of the references pretty cool, like in that very same episode the "yea stormtroopers, these are the 2 droids you are looking for" when Sheldon was talking about Leonard betraying him

Amy is horrible. If it wasnt for the break between s5 and s6 I woudlnt even watch the show purely because of her. Shes terrible.

They were using Alienwares (or XPS's, same thing) and playing Halo throughout seasons 1 and 2 lol

Meh she's annoying but it's too good to miss out on Sheldon's wild antics just because of an annoying character

The hard part is, that unlike leslie winkle who would just pop in and ruin half of a scene or so, shes consistently a part of the storyline and worse yet, consistently part of the sheldon oriented storyline. I dont even think shes a good actor or anything. I could accept the character, but the actor ruins it. Shes the "girl" sheldon, and yet both in actions and statements shes nothing like him. She just stands awkwardly and has a ridiculous inflection. Not an autistic kind of one, not one lacking confidence...just an utterly absurd inflection you would never see in reality. Shes just terrible. I feel insulted that they actually wrote these poor of lines for this poor of an actor and expect me to take it THIS often.

amy is "meh". prefered sheldon as a unique anomality. its not like shes destroying it for me like the guy some posts above. but i wouldnt care at all if she would just disappear right now.
For me at first Amy was just a kinda funny Sheldon side-note, but now that she is trying to be more like Penny and Bernedette, the result is usually pretty funny.
Must admit i love this show with a passion, and so does my GF.
She tells me im like leonard -_- - im nowhere near that smart. Tells her it reminds me of when im talking shit (???) about starcraft over TS. A load of weirdness she cant understand xD
I have only watched what has been aired on E4 though ( a channel on UK TV. ) - i must download moar!
I liked tonight's new episode because it wasn't just funny; it had some drama in it too. It progressed Howard's relationship(s) (or, at least, it will cause changes in the immediate future). It wasn't just a "filler" episode

Wow really? So you're like... at least 6 or so episodes behind us? That stinks
Blah, this show lacks any real wit (i.e. intelligence, the calling card of the nerd). If they're going to make 'nerd' references, at least do it correctly...as a math major, I cringed when they started talking about a Mobius band in one of the episodes. As a side-note, most nerds aren't nearly this garrulous. Mostly shy and awkward.
To be honest, I think Amy started as a "okay" character and is now a great character, she's hilarious. On the other hand, Bernadette is so ****** annoying i can't even watch her.
All the pranks in the Halloween episode were pretty epic, especially the one at the end topped off by the best quote ever "Bazinga punk now we're even."

Ahah I loved it; definitely caught me. Awesome ending.
Good episode overall.
As always, I kind of dislike Leonard. He's always half and half on being an asshole and this is not the first time I've disliked his character. He's not a huge douche but he's kind of a prick in some episodes.

But on the other hand Bernadette is fucking hot. I mean they dress her up nerdy but in a lot of scenes she's better looking that the blonde chick (can't remember her name for some reason).
ALL OF YOU AMY HATERS CAN JUST JUMP OFF A BRIDGE! LEAVE AMY ALONE!!!! /queue trance music
Seriously though, I love the style of humor Amy's character portrays, and I don't know why so many of you don't like her. I do agree Bernadette isn't as funny as she could be, but I think every characters adds SOMETHING to the show.

I like this because I'm smart and I understand a lot of the stuff regarding science in it, I'm also a pretty big nerd so I actually understand every argument they make about the quality of the Star Trek movies, Babylon 5, all the comic stuff. I started watching it a few weeks ago, it was the first time I'd laughed out loud at TV in months. Now I'm on like season 4 and I don't find it as funny, Idk if the kid of jokes are getting old or if the quality degraded. Still like the show.

I don't really like the desperate, self-hating Amy. I prefer the wry and deliberately inappropriate version.
The show is losing it's scientific edge and I don't like that. In the earlier seasons, the plot of an episode was more often based on something which is currently a hot topic in physics (the graphene episode comes to mind). Now it starts to come down to fart jokes and spending whole episodes to make fun of some phobia or social incompetence. Sure, there still is a whiteboard with some QM equations in the back... It's becoming a neurotic version of all the other mainstream shows. This sucks cubic balls in vacuum.
This is just a standard sit com with a thin facade of pseudo science. I watched 5 minutes of it, and when one of the characters explained that the liquids in a tequila sunrise stacked on each other because of different "gravity properties" I turned it off, realizing at once that it was going to be just another show getting it wrong, but it doesn't matter because the average television viewer kind of turns off their brain when they turn on the TV.
I don't know. I disliked the show at first because I thought it kept setting up Sheldon as some incredibly obnoxious nerd whose friends would make fun of him - and they were the heroes for that. I warmed up to it later, since Sheldon can be pretty awesome, a lot of the scientific references aren't actually made up and the rest of the cast's annoyance with Sheldon isn't because of his nerdiness, but because of his obnoxious. I still think it had a lot of bad acting, bad plotting, you name it, but I thought a lot of episodes were quite watchable. That was season three or something. I skipped four and five(?) and downloaded the five most recent episodes the other day, to see what the show was like these days. To my surprise they had some really unfunny and unrealistic unbelievable characters that seemed to be part of the main cast now, and it might be the shock of the new characters, but I thought the show was just not clever at all anymore, when at least in the past it inspired to be.

Not exactly right, the scientific references are mostly correct.

New characters? And what part of the show was meant to be realistic, it's a sitcom.

Actually, almost all of the things in this show are correct. Also, the woman who plays Amy, who is a source for some of the intellectual material, has a PhD in neuroscience.
Yeah Leonard is getting really annoying to watch and really predictable. He always screws up his face into that squinty eyed frown 80% of the time he's on screen. He feels out of place more and more and doesn't fit in with the group. He has much more sex than the others as well.
Amy has really evolved as a character. She used to be the female carbon copy of Sheldon but has found her own place now. Penny gets more and more boring.
just watched season 8 episode 3. it was alright. I haven't watched the show since the first season so i have no idea what is going on but there were some interesting points raised. The science of relationships is a thing. Some aspects of research can be helpful. Specifically marriage counselling or relationship counselling is effective. A relationship contract was also something I thought about in my younger days. Perhaps it might actually gain some popularity with the general public and some improved and realistic version of a relationship contract will become common in society.
Regarding the pitch. I was disappointed. Science and sports work really well together and this episode failed to make that connection. Applying physics, and kinesiology to baseball would been educational and socially positive..
